Non-voting is a vote for the status quo. Or a vote to say that "none of the candidates will improve my life". The relative stability of the American lifestyle probably leads to a decreased voter turn-out.

You're probably right. Isn't it strange how I'm complaining about a by-product of stability.

I don't think compulsory is voting is more or less democratic than non-compulsory voting

thing is though
around election time tv shows always think it's a good idea to ask the opinion of the avarage man/woman on the street
and - honestly - the stuff some people say

I still say that you have to pass an iq test before you're allowed to vote

Personally I don't either. However probably not many of my compatriots would agree.

90,000 people lost their unemployment today becasue while Bush wanted to force Congress to vote on his Omnibus bill, he couldn't be bothered to extend unemployment. I think they may influence the next polls and the boost is temporary. Especially since it is being reported that the Kurds caught Sadaam and held him for us.
A disgrace really since his administration has the largest unemployment since the depression. Of course the numbers will look better next month as these people have disappeared. This will be countered however by the layoff of people that had been hired for the Christmas selling season and that made Novembers numbers look better.
