I don't think that the phrase itself "God Bless America" is arrogant, but I'd agree that many people who use it *are*.

Something that *really* bothered me shortly after 9/11, and that still bothers me, are the people who constantly forwarded around certain images of the burning towers, with an eagle looking down at them, a tear rolling down its face. (See tgames.bubblehost.com/images/eagle_wtc.jpg )

Or, the photo of a burning tower, smoke pouring out its violated side. The smoke curls into an image that can be construed as the face of a devil or demon. (See http://www.snopes.com/rumors/wtcface.htm )

I have no idea why those images invoke such anger and anguish in me. Someone sent me the "devil" one with the text, "so now we know who's behind it" or something. I was furious. At the time, I assumed it was a doctored photo, and said so, trying to dismiss it. Why would someone create such an atrocity? At that very moment, thousands of people's lives were in peril and eventually lost. The sender replied, "who bit your apple? It sends a message." What kind of message is being sent, here, exactly??

I still can't put words to it; I don't know why it upsets me so.

All of you miss the point of this saying, it is not at all meant to put american people above anyone or to make this war a holy war, it is a saying that is meant to give comfort and relief to the american people in this time of danger. its meaning is outside any war and for the citizens of america who are going through hard times. This doesn't mean that America deserves god over everyone else, it doesn't even say it, all it says that american citizens are worthy of being blessed by god. thats all. we are not above anyone else, France should be blessed by God too if put into the same position. I had to say this because all of this about this saying meaning what people here say it means has been very annoying and in my own frustation of writing this i hope people read this and understand what it actually means and ends this stupid topic for good.

Here's my extended discussion, Sula.

God HAS blessed America. I am so thankful for that. I live in a land of freedom. I am given blessing day upon day, moment upon moment. And believe me, I try my hardest not to take it for granted. There's nothing I've done to deserve, so I thank God for it. And I continue to ask his blessings upon the great nation in which I live. Thanks, God!
God Bless America and God Bless Each of You.

AMEN BROTHER!

GOD BLESS AMERICA!

P.S.-When I say "God Bless America", I mean just that,....."God Bless America."
Just like when I was kid and said it every morning.
There is no hidden, over-educated, or abstract meaning. Just "God Bless America."

I find that phrase 'God bless America' to be a very American phrase, I have never heard it reffered to by other countries and I doubt it would ever be used by a Prime Minister in Australia, 'God save Australia' just dont sound right and it really wouldnt have to much relevance as we are not a hugely religious country, but anyway I dont want God to save me, I hate religion, it creates too many wars, this mob fighting with this mob, I would just rahter have my own personal beliefs and be content with that....anyway just my opinion- dont flame me

I like Russell Crowes post Oscar one when asked which country he feels closest to (born in NZ, grew up in Oz, most of his work is in the US);
"God Bless America, God Save The Queen, God Defend New Zealand, Thank Christ For Australia."
