i got terribly confused over a "stupid Africa question" like you -- i think the correct answer was "Lake Victoria," but my memory is hazy.

I don't think bad geographical knowledge is something peculiar to the US....a girl I knew thought Berlin was a country Couldn't tell me where Madrid amongst a few other ones
