I dont think that would be a very smart move. If they were to respond they had better have the support from the rest of the world. Plus doing that would kill millions of innocent civilians who had nothing to do with the attacks.

I think this is a misconception.

It needs to be pointed out that France was attacked by Islamist terrorists before either the US or Britain - and beefed up its security arrangements accordingly.

And many of us will remember the prompt and courageous action of the French special forces some years ago in dealing with a hijacked aircraft.

"Soft" on terrorism is one thing - stating they are ready to go nuclear is something completely different.

As vocal supporters of UN negotiations/inspectors, threatening nukes seems a bit inconsistent.
