from what i hear, which isn't much, but all that crack he smoked in the 80's has seriously damaged his brain. he's often seen wandering around his neighborhood unable to find the front door to his house. the lucidity comes and goes. he's pretty much considered, now, a joke, and a pathetic one, especially because he presided over the city's descent into violence in the 1980s, and he's been followed by a series of increasingly more responsive and talented mayors in the years following his tenure.

Wait, Marion Barry "didn't realize what he was voting on"?

I thought he went to rehab?

Maine becomes 5th state to allow same-sex marriage

By Glenn Adams, Associated Press, May 6

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Maine's governor signed a freshly passed bill Wednesday approving gay marriage, making it the fifth state to approve the practice and moving New England closer to allowing it throughout the region.

New Hampshire legislators were also poised to send a gay marriage bill to their governor, who hasn't indicated whether he'll sign it. If he does, Rhode Island would be the region's sole holdout.

The Maine Senate voted 21-13, with one absent, for a bill that authorizes marriage between any two people rather than between one man and one woman, as state law currently allows. The House had passed the bill Tuesday. Democratic Gov. John Baldacci, who hadn't previously indicated how he would handle the bill, signed it shortly afterward. In the past, he said he opposed gay marriage but supported civil unions, which provide many benefits of marriage.

Debate was brief. Senate President Elizabeth Mitchell, D-Vassalboro, turned the gavel over to an openly gay member, Sen. Lawrence Bliss, D-South Portland, to preside over the final vote. Republican Sen. Debra Plowman of Hampden argued that the bill was being passed "at the expense of the people of faith. You are making a decision that is not well-founded," warned Plowman. But Senate Majority Leader Philip Bartlett II said the bill does not compel religious institutions to recognize gay marriage. "We respect religious liberties...This is long overdue," said Bartlett, D-Gorham.

Maine is now the fourth state in New England to allow same-sex marriages. Connecticut enacted a bill after being ordered to allow gay marriages by the courts, and Vermont passed a bill over the governor's veto. New Hampshire's House was also expected to vote on a bill Wednesday and send it to Gov. John Lynch, a Democrat. Massachusetts' high court has ordered the state to recognize gay marriages. In Rhode Island, a bill to legalize same-sex marriage has been introduced but is not expected to pass this year.

Summary, so people don't have to watch it: a viewer writes to the Christian Broadcast Network where she can find middle ground with her atheist fiance. Pat Robertson says that there is no middle ground: he must become Christian or she must find another man. He is doing the devil's work.

Atheists generally believe in doing the bidding of Satan.

The luxury of not being an American Atheist, I just pity the poor people who would destroy a relationship over something so petty, although they are probably doing their non-believing partners a favour.

My favourite bit was when he said "I don't know what you're doing with each other, I don't know if you're being intimate...."

They've been engaged for 4 years, you dimwit, clearly the satan-lover is getting off.

Thank you.

Pat Robertson would indeed know about the devil's work; he's been doing it himself for decades.

I don't see how that's worse than anything Robertson already has said about gays on TV? Or his prior remarks about mainline Protestants, Hindus, Muslims, liberal academics, feminists, and even the State Department for that matter.

The 'devil's work' thing made me roll my eyes, but after the preceding posts I was expecting something far more vicious than what he actually said, IMO.
