The Internet has allowed artists to direct themselves, market themselves all without the need for fat cats.

There was shitty pop, there was a big trend (disco then, hip hop now? yeah, you could argue hip hop isn't just a trend, but for the sake of argument ...), there was good music if you knew where to find it.

Same as it is now. The same thing could be said for any decade.

as for the music in the 70s being better?

that is more provable than a claim that "ten thingies" were written on stone tablets

I think music creativity ranks among the lowest in reasons to close the internet. I can think of so many others.

It just makes Elton sound like a cranky old man shouting "You damn kids, get off my lawn!"

So bitter old queen AND cranky old man. Well done, Elton!

There were dozens of records that are now considered classics released in the first 7 years of the 70's alone. How many classics have been released so far this decade?

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Kid A
Sea Change
Funeral

..............?

Nah. 70's win.

Well if what came out in the '70s are considered classics now, then we'll have to wait to see what's considered a '00s classic in 20-30 years.

Many albums will have to age VERY well. David Bowie or Demi Moore well.
