elections in Turkey

The rejection of the applications to annul the constitutional reform package for the direct election of the president has pleased the government but also opened a new can of worms.

The Constitutional Court decided the reform package should go to a referendum, however parliamentary elections are on july 22, earlier than the scheduled referendum on Oct. 21, and this is causing certain problems. Even if the public agrees that they should elect the president, the new Parliament that will be elected on july 22 will still need to elect the next president according to the Constitution. If the parties in the new Parliament fail to agree on an acceptable candidate, new parliamentary elections need to be called.

If they agree on a candidate to replace Ahmet Necdet Sezer, then they face the possibility of the public accepting the direct election of the president while the serving president elected by Parliament has seven more years in office.
