If they had cancelled a performance by the band because their hair was too long, we'd think it was dumb, but we wouldn't be crying "censorship". I don't really see the difference between that scenario and this one, dumbness and all.

"Censorship" implies that the band had a right to play at the school, and I don't think that's the case, any more than I think a Satan-worshipping band has a right to play there.

I know not allowing the f-word on TV is censorship. I know that not allowing a naked person to spread their crapper apart on TV is censorship. However, these examples are far more indecent than a band who acknowledges to follow Christianity.

Yeah, I doubt anyone worth knowing is going to protest this. I'm with you on your point that the students shoud have a choice to attend the assembly/concert. I do think that some things are meant to be censored, such as the examples I used, but I don't necessarily think it's great to censor and restrict a band that might actually have something meaningful to say. From the band's perspective, their interpretation might be "Our ideals and convictions are not welcomed by the public, yet all we have to offer is a positive message. I guess depression and anger are the only ways to get your music heard."

And some wonder why kids are so depressed and angry these days... it's all they listen to. But then again, what would they rather do, sit in class or see a rock band? I don't know for sure.

Speaking of censorship, my new pet peeve is radio stations playing slightly censored songs (although it's often so subtle you don't hear it), only to find out they're entirely inappropriate for my young kids when they want me to buy it for them and I do the cursory good parent lyric review only to then have to tell them no. Green Day - You are a most egregious offender, and your use of profanity adds absolutely nothing to your songs, other than display your lack of imagination when it comes to vocabulary. Oh, and wave bye bye to a potential purchase, not that it will affect you too much.

What?! The ACLU would have no say what's so ever in this. There were talks that the band were going to play and then the school decided no, if it was any other band it would still be the same situation. ACLU would have absolutely no say. i have 3 kids and it is so confusing to be a parent now a days.

its sad they arent letting that band play-

ive got a super idea....WHY dont the parents JOIN the kids at the show-...then if the kids have questions about god, drugs, etc.
it would be a great oppurtunity to dicuss things...

weve got so many things guiding our kids besides ourselves...when it comes to tv radio internet ..etc...and we dont want to hurt thier feelings if we dont exactly agree or get what they are into- we dont want them to turn away from us ..but society promotes so much independence..they can end up as confused as we are.

I dont know if what im saying makes any sense to anyone else but me. I hope so..


Im pretty open to discussing sexual topics with my kids...so open that they are shocked sometimes...im not graphic ..but i do use words like vagina and penis and condom...why not? Ive got no idea what they might like to me to refer to those things as anyway ......who knows what names they invent?

as for religion...I was raised catholic..baptised in a catholic church etc. etc.......but im not confirmed...therefore not a REAL catholic..
i call myself a christian...but im not a born again christian...i dont like the charismatic christian style...i guess i desire for me and my family a place in between but as far as I know that doesnt exist.

You know, I have to say that seeing The Vagina Monologues was an absolutely amazing experience for me. I saw it as a sophomore in college, although I know there were girls there younger than I. It deals with being comfortable with and proud of a woman's body (warts and all, as it were), with surviving sexual abuse and harassment, racism, sexism, and way more.

When I saw it, too, it was a benefit performance for a rape crisis center, and they were featuring men's monologues, too--men responding to sexism and sexual violence and talking about how they wanted to change the system and do their part to not perpetuate the cycle of violence.

It was, again, totally amazing.

I am also a mother of 3 and a lot of this makes sense to me. I was just getting ready to post, instead of hiding things from kids, use it as a chance to teach them! It doesn't mean they're going to join any particular religion or be naked taking their crapper apart. But isn't education and enlightenment always better than hiding in the darkness? It only breeds more misunderstanding, fear and hate in everyone

there's a lot of misconception out there about what 'the vagina monologues' is all about. maybe people freak out when they hear the word vagina used in such a context and assume it's borderline porn or something. the play has taken on a life of its own, and has become its own social justice movement, speaking out against violence against women. eve ensler is one of my favourite people on the planet.

i saw the play on valentine's day in 2003, at my university. i went with one of my best friends (and i have to say it was the best valentine's day i've ever had). i too was completely blown away, with the screenplay, and with the tremendous acting talents in our midst.

I've only seen bits and pieces on an HBO special, so I wasn't going to comment if I feel it should be in high schools or not. But yes I think anything with the word vagina in it will scare some people.

In America everyone is having sex but no one likes to talk about it.
