Catholics and Condoms

MADRID, Spain (AP) -- In a substantial shift from traditional policy, the Catholic Church in Spain has said it supports the use of condoms to prevent the spread of AIDS.

"Condoms have a place in the global prevention of AIDS," Juan Antonio Martinez Camino, spokesman for the Spanish Bishops Conference, told reporters after a meeting Tuesday with Health Minister Elena Salgado to discuss ways of fighting the disease.

Excellent, first gay marriage and now this. It's good to see Spain is making an effort to get with the times.

This is cool. Spain is leading the way in fighting the spread of AIDS. More power to them!

It's encouraging that a nation is finally taking in what's going on around them. Here's to hoping that this is the first step to progress.

I wouldn't exactly say that, it's more that the Spanish Catholic church decided not to be an obstacle anymore in the fight against AIDS.

But you're right; more power to them!

I posted a thread about Catholics in the USA which are becoming more vocal in support of condom use to save lives back in November. (don't have the time to look for it right now)

Here is their website:

http://www.condoms4life.org/

As someone who was raised Catholic, I applaud this group for their courage to speak their consciences and to go against the grain of traditional Catholic thinking on this issue.

I hope people don't think that all Catholics agree w/ the church's stand on this, obviously they don't.

I'd even go out on a limb and say that there could be many priests who don't agree w/ it either.

It's all about saving lives and preventing disease, that's all it should be about.

Well, the bishops seem to be working with the government.

I personally don't see why a church would oppose pre-intercourse birth control, as long as they discourage it as an alternative to sex within the bounds of marriage for those who are members of the church. I think condoms are safer, but not guaranteed.

I second that too. The Jesuit priests and Sisters of Saint Joseph of Carondelet that educated me supported sex education in schools (they also taught us evolution). Because of that, we learned about different types of birth control, sexually transmitted diseases and places one could go to for counseling or help. They really provided a nurturing environment that encouraged us to ask questions about any topic without making us feel ashamed. I say that with pride because I know it's not every parish or school that does that but it is a big step in the right direction.
