i can't believe how it can even be close.

but honestly, i'm really starting to think canada as we know it is about to change forever.

and you know how people always say shit like that, overdramatically?

i'm completely serious. i can see a canada without quebec, a canada with harper in control, a canada that reverts to american ideals, and a canada that takes ten steps back.

I am hoping that this is just a replay of what happened last time - remember the
Tories were tied or in a slight lead early on in the race, and then they started banging on about gay marriage and abortion and alluding to Paul Martin's child porn support and it all went downhill.

That party just can't muzzle itself.

0.7

A Canadian invention, or so they say.

Should be the Canadian issue. It is symbolism and action (currently inaction, unfortunately) rolled into one.

That's my kind of Canada.

I support the idea.

But I respectfully disagree this needs to be the issue to the voters of Canada.

actually, that has nothing to do with canada per se.

but i understand what you're saying.

regardless, what you're saying isn't a campaign issue no matter what bono says.

really, bono has done nothing but shoot himself in the foot by spouting off martin because if harper wins bono will get fuck all for his causes.

Yep. Elections - it's official. I'm not in age to vote yet, unfortunatly, but I guess the Liberals will win again. Harper just looks like a beaten dog and his ideas are too strict : Against abortion, against gay marriages, for war in Iraq, etc. A bit scary, isn't it ? I rather have a bunch of stealers on the throne than such a man. That's why I'd vote probably for NPD or Bloc Quebecois ;)

It will be so nice the big posters for Christmas... as going out in January to vote... Icy temperature.

Except wouldn't the BQ and the Tories form a coalition if the latter won a minority government? That's what the pundits like to say, although I can't imagine they'd get along all that well.

It is conceivable and the BQ would be the most likely coalition partners for the Conservatives (and likewise, the Conservatives are probably the only potential coalition partner with the BQ), but it would greatly increase the chances of a successful seperatist movement. Such a minority situation would likely be short lived and if the BQ were to cooperate it would only be under the auspices of launching a sovereigntist vote. I don't know if even Harper can float that one.

The BQ were pushing for this election (and thus aligning with the Conservatives) because they can smell the Liberal blood in the waters of Quebec. They are perfectly positioned to claim a large number of seats in the province which would allow them to better further their separatist agenda.

Apart from that, they have little to no use of the Tories. They disagree with them on the divisive issues of gay marriage and abortion and don't support Conservative social programs or tax break proposals. The Tories are a means to an end to them, and once they gain seats in Quebec and are in control, I wonder what use they have of this coalition at all.

Well, the Bloc keeps getting votes from the province of Quebec and I guess they might be helping the Conservatives only in hope of separating from the rest of the Canada. That parti was created only for this cause, and representing the Quebeckers. It makes years they're working on that and they've never arrived to any result though.

Does it take a minimum of participation of the population for a governement to be elected by the way ?

Actually, it does have a great deal to do with Canada. 0.7 is symbolic of our place in the world, and I'd go as far as saying it's intertwined with our pretend peacekeeping (which, sadly, and startling to some, is 33rd in the world).

The structure of receiving foreign aid is, is a huge problem, I'll admit. The thought of sending it to corrupt governments bothers me greatly. However, this is not a good enough reason not to increase aid.

I believe that Canadians have to become accountable, myself included, to the issues of global poeverty and fair trade. The irony is that as individuals, we give more than any other country to charities within our borders -- we're a pretty generous bunch. Those numbers are magnified even more in my province of Newfoundland and Labrador, even though we're one of the poorest.

As a country, the perception is that we're equally as caring about the rest of the world.

But we can't even make a measly 0.7% in foreign aid an election issue?

amazing.

i thought the early election would backfire on the conservatives, but today's ipsosreid poll shows the liberals and conservatives are tied at 31 per cent each.

meaning the conservatives have gain substantial ground in the last week.

and what did stephen harper do today, in his first day campaigning fo the election?

brought up...UNPROVOKED the fact that he would bring up the whole gay marriage issue all over again as soon as he were elected prime minister.

give it UP already.

Harper's doing this because apparently the polls show the minority votes dwindling for the Liberals. Harper and the Conservatives believe that's the one thing minority groups have in common: opposition to gay marriage.

Harper's in trouble if minorities start seeing, and rightly so, this issue not as a religious issue, but as one of tolerance and equal rights, since that's usually up there in the minds of minorities.
