This is quite an amazing story. Amid all the news about wars, murders and rapes there seems to be plenty of feel-good stories in the New Year, starting with the NYC subway heroes and now this.

I cannot imagine the roller coaster of emotions these families must have gone through.

Stories such as this restore my faith in life and humanity. It shows me that one must never give up hope, no matter what.

Ecstatic parents of boys found in Missouri hail 'miracle'

ST. LOUIS, Missouri (CNN) -- Two very relieved and beaming families hugged their sons at news conferences Saturday, the day after the two missing boys were found -- one after four days, the other after four years.

Police had been searching for Ben Ownby, 13, who disappeared Monday, when they found him with another teenager in a man's apartment in suburban St. Louis, Missouri. That boy told the officers that he was Shawn Hornbeck, who was last seen riding his bike in 2002, when he was 11.

The apartment owner, Michael J. Devlin, 41, was arrested Friday and charged with one count of first-degree kidnapping, according to Franklin County Prosecutor Robert Parks.

He is being held on $1 million bail and may also face federal charges.

The rescued boys' families told their stories at separate news conferences, each filled with emotion and overwhelming relief.

Shawn's mother, Pam Akers, and his stepfather, Craig Akers, said they had never given up hope.

"We've got a lot of catching up to do," said a tearful Pam Akers. "He's grown up on me, that's for sure."

"Shawn is a miracle here," she said.

"This is one of those rare, rare things. To have one missing child found is just extraordinary," Craig Akers told reporters. "To have two found at the same time is one of those things -- you don't even read about things like that."

Shawn sat at a table close to his mother, exchanging hugs with her and smiling as he watched his stepfather talk excitedly to reporters. At one point, he put his forehead on the table in mock embarassment as Craig Akers relayed, to much laughter, that Shawn's first request was a hamburger from McDonald's.

At his news conference, Ben appeared at ease and happy as he stood with his sister and his parents, Don and Doris Ownby.

Doris Ownby said she was "just, just ecstatic" to have Ben back. "I didn't say anything, I just grabbed him and held him."

She said the first thing Ben wanted to do was to play a computer game, and the first thing she did that morning was check to see if Ben was still there.

Family wants to spread hope

The Akers, who have spent the past four years helping in other missing children cases, said they wanted to give hope to those parents. Craig Akers said he remembered the day he heard Utah teenager Elizabeth Smart was found -- on March 12, 2003, nearly a year after being kidnapped.

"I remember how much that raised our hopes, how much fuel that gave us to keep going," he said.

The conference was held in a room decorated with balloons and handmade posters that read "Miracles Do Happen" and "We All Missed You, Shawn."

"I want to give that hope to the families, to the family that their kids can come home," Pam Akers said. "It may be years later, may be days later, may be weeks later, but they can come home safe and just always keep that faith and hope."

The boys were found in Kirkwood, Missouri, about an hour away from the Akers' home in Richwoods.

The break came after reports of a sighting of a rusty white Nissan pickup truck that matched the description of one sought in the disappearance of Ben, last seen getting off his school bus in Franklin County, near St. Louis.

Two police officers in suburban Kirkwood went to the apartment complex to serve an unrelated warrant and spotted the pickup, Franklin County Sheriff Gary Toelke told reporters Friday.

"That resulted in the recovery," Toelke said.

It is not clear what happened to the boys while they were with Devlin, but Craig Akers said Shawn did not go to school during the four years he's been missing.

"All the questions will come later," said Pam Akers. "We're just trying to absorb that he's home."

'That's my son'

Craig Akers described driving home from work and getting the call that Shawn might have been found. "It took a minute to find a suitable place to pull over," he said.

"The words -- 'We think we found Shawn, we're 95 percent sure that we found Shawn and that he's alive' -- were the sweetest words I ever heard in my life," he said.

Driving to see their son was "the longest drive we ever had to do," he said.

When the parents and Shawn saw each other, there were no words, he said.

"Just a split second of shock," Akers recounted. "The last time we saw him, he was yea tall and 11 years old. It kind of throws you for a second. But ... once we saw the face, we said, "Oh, my God, that's my son...

"That was pretty much where we were the first five minutes. Not a lot of words spoken, except a lot of 'I love you's,' kisses, and 'We're so glad that you're home.' "

How heartbreaking and brilliant at the same time. He's grown an awful lot, and in some emotional and hormonal years of his life. I do hope this poor Shawn gets a lot of help with this.

Hm, last year Natascha Kampusch in Austria, who was kept for 8 years, and now this boy.
Would be nice to hear about some more cases.

Some 13 years ago in my region a girl got kidnapped, and never seen since. My mother went to school with her father, and my grandfather found the bike on the way to one of his fields.

Some time you start asking yourself whether it would be better if she is still alive considering what's going on in some stupid heads. Like the case Dutroux in Belgium showed. When te children there were discovered there was this weird feeling of hope, and fear at the same time.

Even today some people are calling the police telling they have seen her.
In most cases it's just bullshit.

Great for these boys, though. Finally them and their parents are together again.

This happened pretty close to where I used to live. The parents set up a website for a missing kids foundation they started because of this whole ordeal. Well there was a messageboard on this website and the kidnapper posted a message asking how long they were going to keep looking for their kid.

Pretty creepy. Hopefully he'll be able to overcome the abuse he took during the 4 years.

I'm so glad this had a happy ending. Watching the stepfather get teary-eyed makes me feel the same a little.

WOW, that´s fantastic! is great news for that family, I remember a girl that was kidnapped and she applied some tricks she saw in CSI, and the police captured the man that kidnapped her

In the Austrian case it was similar.

In many cases criminals, doesn't matter what they are commiting, don't go too far from their hometowns or the places they live since they know this area the best.

Afterwards it must be really weird to know how close the son or daughter was, really.

Could you imagine not KNOWING where your child is for 4 years?
I couldn't deal without knowing, and knowing that wherever they are they would need me. It would be pure torture.

To me it is uncomprehensible. I would be like the walking dead.

I am so very happy for the families who where literally blessed with getting their sons back home.

No doubt being emotionally and mentally tortured, if not more, as seperation from your parents is torture on its own. Mum was saying he had a fairly blank look on his face when he finally saw his parents again. This kid and this family have so much more to go through. It's heartbreaking. He'll never get over what he went through, and I truly doubt they will ever be a comfortable family again. But that of course depends on the help they get now and how resilient the boy is, plus what he went through. God, the list goes on.
:(

I'm sure he was threatened- there is mental abuse that goes along with all of that, Stockholm syndrome, etc. I'm sure he must have been sexually abused too, the guy is allegedly a sex offender. Of course now everyone who knew this Devlin guy is saying they had no indication he was anything other than "normal".

If only other cases could be resolved like this one. There are several sites with pictures and info about missing kids, one is

yeah, you probably don't.

miss harlem's more on target here. it's far from happily ending.

Interesting, I've read the kidnapper didn't have any criminal record. Only a few fines for traffic violation.

Now he's an alleged sex offender.
Would be interesting what's true, and what is made up by the media.

They say further, said the boy was seen outside, slept over at friend's places, talked to the neighbours and even owned a cell phone.
If that's true he either was massively brainwashed, or had a pretty high "reaction" of the Stockholm syndrome (sorry, don't know how to say it in English).

It's a weird story, and hopefully not too much happened.

What happened was the media got confused. There is another guy in St Louis that has the same name, and he is a registered sex offender in Utah for indecent exposure. They showed his picture on the news and everything. But woops, it was the wrong guy.

The real kidnapper was not a registered sex offender.

There are some reports they have found child porn on Devlin's computer, I don't know if that will turn out to be true.

At first there were news reports that he was an offender, but apparently that wasn't true- well at least he has no convictions. Who knows what really happened, obviously Shawn does but I'm sure it is all very difficult and confusing for him. I hope he can eventually be as ok as possible, given what has happened to him.

Kidnap victim Shawn Hornbeck was "brainwashed" into staying with his abductor after being told his parents no longer wanted him.

His kidnapper also threatened to shoot the 15-year-old after snatching him off the street.

Friends of the teenager have revealed Michael Devlin, 41, had at least three guns in the apartment where Shawn was held captive.

Tony Douglas, 15, who was Shawn's best friend, said: "We both knew there were guns in the house. Michael told us that he had the guns and were for his protection."

Shawn's stepfather Craig Akers, 45, has revealed his son's life was threatened by Devlin while he lived with him in a ground floor flat in Kirkwood, a suburb of St Louis, Missouri.

Police and psychologists will tomorrow begin to question Shawn about his four years as a prisoner. They believe he suffered "Stockholm Syndrome", where a victim begins to identify with the captor.

DA: Suspect confessed to snatching boy, 13

UNION, Missouri (CNN) -- Pizza manager Michael J. Devlin admitted to police that he snatched a 13-year-old Missouri boy, a prosecutor said Thursday.

"When Mr. Devlin was taken into custody, he did confess that he had kidnapped Ben Ownby from Franklin County," prosecutor Robert Parks told a news conference.

Devlin, 41, pleaded not guilty to kidnapping a child under age 14 at a hearing Thursday. The boy was referred to in court by his initials, "W.O."

"I'm not guilty," Devlin said during a brief appearance via video link from the county jail. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 30 years to life in prison.

Security concerns kept Devlin from appearing in person before Judge David Tobin at the Franklin County Courthouse. He is being held in isolation on $1 million bail.

Devlin's attorneys said the not guilty plea was a procedural matter. They would not comment on the alleged confession, which was revealed after the hearing.

The attorneys said they are concerned that Devlin will not be able to receive a fair trial because of the intense media coverage of a developing drama receiving national attention.

Devlin is being held in isolation for his own safety, authorities said. His next court date was scheduled March 15, but prosecutor Parks said a grand jury is likely to get the case before then.

Ben was found with another missing teen, Shawn Hornbeck, on Friday in Devlin's apartment in Kirkwood, a St. Louis suburb. Ben had been missing for four days, Shawn for more than four years.

Similarities with 1991 case?

Authorities continue to examine similarities between the boys' alleged abductions and the 1991 disappearance of 11-year-old Arlin Henderson in Moscow Mills.

Both Shawn and Arlin were last seen riding bicycles.

Arlin had a crew cut and was wearing a camouflage shirt and pants.

Arlin bore a physical resemblance to Ben, a 13-year-old who was allegedly kidnapped January 8 as he got off the school bus near his home in Union.

Devlin has been charged with two counts of kidnapping and armed criminal action, which carries a minimum of three years.

The latter charge stems from an allegation that Devlin kidnapped Shawn at gunpoint, said Washington County Sheriff Kevin Schroeder.

Meanwhile, Missouri authorities said they are looking into the possibility that Devlin also may have monitored or even participated in a 2005 search for another missing child to learn police investigative techniques in such situations.

Lincoln County detective Chris Bartlett said Devlin was, at the very least, aware of the search for Bianca Noel Piper, 13, who disappeared in March 2005.

"Whether he was a part of it, in it or in the middle, or just watching from afar, he absolutely knew what was going on," Bartlett said. "I certainly believe Michael Devlin was monitoring our search and the disappearance of Bianca Piper."

Evidence being pooled

Police said the recovery of Ben and Shawn has breathed new life into the Piper and Henderson investigations, prompting a few more tips in those cases. Lincoln County Sheriff's Lt. Rick Harrell said that Devlin's name is being checked against archived logs and investigation files from both disappearances.

Addressing reporters Wednesday, Washington County prosecutor John Rupp said there is no question that Shawn was kidnapped and was not with Devlin voluntarily.

"Shawn was abducted against his will. Period. End of the story," Rupp said.

Parks, the Franklin County prosecutor, said he and his counterparts in other counties involved in the case are "pooling all of our evidence" to determine what other charges will be brought against Devlin.

Ben's parents said Tuesday their son is recovering from the ordeal but has not discussed what happened.

"Ben's doing fine," Doris Ownby said.

She and her husband, William, have sought professional counseling for the entire family.

"They said not to push a child that's been through something like that," William Ownby said. "Eventually, they'll come to terms and volunteer that -- or not. That's fine. He hasn't volunteered anything -- yet. But they say it takes time."

Devlin confronted

Kirkland police officer Gary Wagster and fellow officer Chris Nelson started questioning Devlin outside his apartment building after they realized his truck matched the description of the suspect's vehicle in Ben's kidnapping.

They said that initially Devlin was happy and respectful to them.

"As the questions began to get more specific, that's when the attitude changed," Wagster said. "It threw a lot of red flags up for us."

Devlin's landlord described him as an ideal tenant, and Mike Prosperi, his boss for 25 years, said his employee never gave him trouble.

"I mean, he was my manager; he counted my money. ... And you just don't do that with somebody that you don't trust," Prosperi said.

Yeah I'm sure Shawn must have loved his life with that guy, especially if he was molested. Bill O'Reilly should shut up, I wonder what he would say if God forbid someone kidnapped one of his children and they ended up in a situation like that.

I think it is a sad day indeed when people are making comments like that about a kidnapped child and making comments about a situation in which they have no idea about what happened. The finger needs to be pointed at Devlin.

I just think its very scary for a person to be brainwashed that much that he can have relative freedom (ie sleeping at a friends house where the chance to escape would have been high, or a cell phone where he could have called the police etc) and still not act on it. I mean he was 11 when kidnapped, thats old enough to know wrong and right and all that stuff. 4 years is a VERY long time to be "kidnapped" and not do anything about it. Obviously this Stockholm Syndrome is a very powerful psychosis. But obviously not everyone gets it, so i wonder if just some people are susceptable to it?

If an 11 year old child is kidnapped at gunpoint, probably repeated sexually molested, threatened with violence or death, told his family would be killed if he tried to escape, or told that his family had given up looking for him over and over again for 4 years, etc. - who knows what this horrible guy did to that kid - I think it's a good bet that by the time he was finally rescued, the kid was not thinking like a normal 15 year old would think about the possibility of escape.

yeah if all that happened, then it can be understood for him to be emotionally scarred enough not to do anything, but we don't know anything about it - i'm not saying he chose to stay there (unlike o'wanker) but im just really interested in this stockholm syndrome - because it seems to have such a hold over people.

I would like to say something more personal, but don't really feel comfortable in explaining it to all and sundry. I just think not all kids are wired this way, and it would be interesting to see a study in which some kids are more suceptable to a kidnapper while others arn't.

I don't doubt that some kids (and adults) are more likely to fall victim to stockholm syndrome than others, but like you said, we don't really know what when on in this case.

It's just that for O'Reilly to suggest the possibility that the kid stayed there because the kidnapper might have:

made things easy for him. No school, play all day long.

is really idiotic and gross.

Yeah, I hope so too. I used to like Oprah. Lately I've seen just how bloody annoying she really is - to the point of me wondering why she even has professionals and 'experts' on. She doesn't listen to anyone, and loves to repeat her catchy so-called intellectual gems of wisdom. She's a pain in the arse and should quit tv.
