between my head and heart
Due to some current frustration with "faithful" hypocrites I decided to post a Sunday Dispatch of my own...

"I damn you all to hell
I speak in the name of god
I know him intimately
I speak in the name of the white haired old man in the clouds
Always a man
Dispensing lightening justice from his fingertips
As self-righteous and bigoted as those who created him
A cruel desert God with absolutely no sense of humor
How do you feel old man?
How do you feel?
Being spoken for by these self-righteous fanatics
Is heaven full, oh lord, of these babbling preachers and
God-fearing biggots
Well I know where Id rather be
Away from this cacophony
God only knows
God only knows
God only knows"

God Only Knows - lyrics by Tim Booth

"I don't want to start any blasphemous rumours, but I think that God's got a sick sense of humour, and when I die I expect to find him laughing."

Well, if I may join in, I offer Porcupine Tree's Halo. It seems appropriate.

God is in my fingers, God is in my head
God is in the trigger, God is in the lead

God is on the cell phone, God is on the 'net
God is in the warning, God is in the threat

God is freedom, God is truth
God is power, God is proof
God is fashion, God is fame
God gives meaning, God gives pain

You can be right like me
With God in the hole, you're a righteous soul
I've got a halo 'round me, I've got a halo 'round me
I'm not the same as you
'Cause I've seen the light and I'm gaining in height now
I've got a halo 'round me, I've got a halo 'round me
I've got a halo 'round my head

Oh don't go and talk about my father
God is my friend
Jesus is my friend
He made this world for us to live in, and gave us everything

And all he asks of us is we give each other love.
Oh ya

Don't go and talk about my father
Cause God is my friend
Jesus is my friend
He loves us whether or not we know it
Just loves us, oh ya
And He'll forgive all our sins
Forgive all our sins

And all He asks of us, is we give each other love.
Oh ya

Love your mother, she bore you
Love your father, he works for you
Love your sister, she's good to you
Love your brother, your brother

Don't go and talk about my father, He's good to us,
God is my friend
Jesus is my friend
For when we call in Him for mercy, Mercy Father
He'll be merciful, my friend
Oh, yes He will

All he asks of us, I know, is we give each other love,
Oh ya

"God Is Love", Marvin Gaye

"Love your mother, she bore you
Love your father, he works for you
Love your sister, she's good to you
Love your brother, your brother"

The brother was too much even for him :D

I love my brother :)

Jesus Was An Only Son by Bruce Springsteen

Jesus was an only son
As he walked up Calvary Hill
His mother Mary walking beside him
In the path where his blood spilled
Jesus was an only son
In the hills of Nazareth
As he lay reading the Psalms of David
At his mother's feet

A mother prays, "Sleep tight, my child, sleep well
For I'll be at your side
That no shadow, no darkness, no tolling bell,
Shall pierce your dreams this night."

In the garden at Gethsemane
He prayed for the life he'd never live,
He beseeched his Heavenly Father to remove
The cup of death from his lips

Now there's a loss that can never be replaced,
A destination that can never be reached,
A light you'll never find in another's face,
A sea whose distance cannot be breached

Well Jesus kissed his mother's hands
Whispered, "Mother, still your tears,
For remember the soul of the universe
Willed a world and it appeared."

When God Made Me by Neil Young

Was he thinking about my country,
or the colour of my skin?
Was he thinking about my religion,
and the way I worshipped him?
Did he create just me in his image,
or every living thing?

When God made me.
When God made me.

Was he planning only for believers,
or for those who just had faith?
Did he envision all wars
that were fought in his name?
Did he say there was only one way
to be close to him?

When God made me.
When God made me.

Did he give me the gift of love
to say who I could choose?

When God made me.
When God made me.
When God made me.

Did he give me the gift of voice
so some could silence me?
Did he give me the gift of vision
not knowing what I might see?
Did he give me the gift of compassion
to help my fellow man?

When God made me.
When God made me.
When God made me.

Dear god,
Hope you got the letter,
And I pray you can make it better down here.
I dont mean a big reduction in the price of beer,
But all the people that you made in your image,
See them starving on their feet,
cause they dont get enough to eat

From god,
I cant believe in you.

Dear god,
Sorry to disturb you,
But I feel that I should be heard loud and clear.
We all need a big reduction in amount of tears,
And all the people that you made in your image,
See them fighting in the street,
cause they cant make opinions meet,
About god,
I cant believe in you.

Did you make disease, and the diamond blue?
Did you make mankind after we made you?
And the devil too!

Dear god,
Dont know if you noticed,
But your name is on a lot of quotes in this book.
Us crazy humans wrote it, you should take a look,
And all the people that you made in your image,
Still believing that junk is true.
Well I know it aint and so do you,
Dear god,
I cant believe in,
I dont believe in,

I wont believe in heaven and hell.
No saints, no sinners,
No devil as well.
No pearly gates, no thorny crown.
Youre always letting us humans down.
The wars you bring, the babes you drown.
Those lost at sea and never found,
And its the same the whole world round.
The hurt I see helps to compound,
That the father, son and holy ghost,
Is just somebodys unholy hoax,
And if youre up there youll perceive,
That my hearts here upon my sleeve.
If theres one thing I dont believe in...

Its you,
Dear god.

Cathedral (Graham Nash)

Open up the gates of the church and let me out of here
Too many people have lied in the name of Christ
For anyone to heed the call
So many people have died in the name of Christ
That I can't believe it all

Soldier (Neil Young)

Jesus, I saw you
walkin' on the river
I don't believe you.
You can't deliver right away
I wonder why.

Jesus, your eyes
shine like the sun
I wonder why.

Where I like it best (Rickie Lee Jones)

I wanted to pray
I wanted to let you go on your way
I wanted to know why they laid there
Dying in the streets next to the restaurant
Where people were eating and yes
I wanted to pray

How do you pray in a world like this
You know, I see the people on TV
And they close their eyes and they bow their heads
And they say "Let us pray"
And it feels so cold and meaningless
And I wanted to pray
And I said
Tell me father
Tell me mother
Heavenly mother
And they said

When you pray
Pray alone by yourself
In the secret room of your heart
Don't go out into the church filled with people and pray
God hears every secret that you say
See all those people praying on TV and the churches
They like to make a big parade out of what they're doing
They think God hears them louder if they say it
Over and over and over and over and over again

But I say, God, but I say this
You are the prayer
Your eyes are the prayer
Your hand on your cheek
You are the prayer
Those words you want to speak
They are the prayer
That dance you make
When you're by yourself
Just before your mother calls you on the phone
You are the prayer
I tell you what
You gotta take it back from them
Because the prayers belong to you
All you gotta do is say hey hey
I'm down here too, I'm down here too
I'm down here too
And I hear you in the trees
And I hear you
And I'm near you
I wonder why there's so much suffering

I want to say thank you, thank you
Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you
I wanted to say thank you, thank you
I wanted to say
I wanted to say
You are where I like it best
You are where I like it best
You are where I like it best

That's the Lords' prayer
"You are where I want to be"
So, amen, just amen
Amen, all by myself, amen, amen
I'm so lonely, just amen
And I'm rising, rising, just amen
You can look through my eyes
Hear through my hear
Look through my eyes

"Redemption" by Johnny Cash

From the hands it came down
From the side it came down
From the feet it came down
And ran to the ground
Between heaven and hell
A teardrop fell In the deep crimson dew
The tree of life grew

And the blood gave life
To the branches of the tree
And the blood was the price
That set the captives free
And the numbers that came
Through the fire and the flood Clung to the tree
And were redeemed by the blood

From the tree streamed a light
That started the fight 'Round the tree grew a vine
On whose fruit I could dine
My old friend Lucifer came
Fought to keep me in chains
But I saw through the tricks
Of six-sixty-six

And the blood gave life
To the branches of the tree
And the blood was the price
That set the captives free
And the numbers that came
Through the fire and the flood Clung to the tree
And were redeemed by the blood

From his hands it came down
From his side it came down
From his feet it came down
And ran to the ground
And a small inner voice Said "You do have a choice."
The vine engrafted me
And I clung to the tree

"Jesus, I/Mary Star of the Sea" by Zwan (Billy Corgan's band between SP gigs)
jesus, i've taken my cross
all to leave and follow thee
jesus, i've taken my cross
all to leave and follow thee

i'm destitute, despised, forsaken
all to leave and follow thee
and follow thee

man may trouble to distress me
to drive my heart to the cross
yeah, man may trouble to distress me
to drive this heart to the cross

i'm resolute, reviled, forsaken
all to leave and follow thee
and follow thee

jesus
jesus
jesus
reborn
reborn
reborn
reborn

so perish every fond ambition
god and trouble are all i've known
yet how rich is my condition
god and heaven are all my own
god and heaven are all my own

And we should all know this one (among many others)

The rule has been disproved
The stone has been moved
The grain is now a groove
All debts are removed, ooh

Oh can't you see what love has done to every broken heart
Oh can't you see what love has done for every heart that cries
Love left a window in the skies
And to love I rhapsodize

You who live in heaven
hear the prayers of those of us who live on earth
Who are afraid of being left by those we love and
who get hardened by the hurt
Do you remember when you lived down here where we all scrape
To find the faith to ask for daily bread
Did you forget about us after you had flown away
Well I memorized every word you said
Still I'm so scared I'm holding my breath
While you're up there just playing hard to get

You who live in radiance
Hear the prayers of those of us who live in skin
We have a love that's not as patient as yours was
But still we do love now and then
Did you ever know lonliness, did you ever know need
Did you remember just long a night can get
When you are barely holding on and your friends fall asleep
And don't see the blood that's running in your sweat
Will those who mourn be left uncomforted
While you're up there just playing hard to get.

I know you bore our sorrows
I know you feel our pain
I know that it would not hurt any less
Even if it could be explained
I know that I am only lashing out at the one who loves me most
And after I have figured this
Somehow all I really need to know is if

You who live in eternity hear
the prayers of those of us who live in time
We cannot see what's ahead and we cannot get free
of what we've left behind
I'm reeling from all these voices that keep screaming in my ears
All these words of shame and doubt, blame and regret
I can't see how you're leading me unless you've let me here
Where I'm lost enough to let myself be led
And so you've been here all along I guess
It's just your way and you are just plain hard to get.

That one was extraordinary, maycocksean.

Wish I could take the credit. . .

That song was actually never recorded in the studio by Rich. He died in a car wreck about a week or so after he sang it on a demo recording. His "last" CD, entitled "The Jesus Record", has the nine demos he did just before his death (including "Hard to Get") and studio recordings of the same songs by his bandmates and other recording artists. Despite the poor sound quality, I prefer the demos with Rich himself singing. A song like "Hard to Get" is especially poignant with just Rich and his guitar singing into a $19.95 K-mart tape recorder. Gets me everytime. . .
