[q]Bush takes aim at gasoline prices
By Steve Holland

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush pressured profit-rich oil companies to invest in new refineries on Tuesday and announced steps against any price gouging to contain gas prices that have soared while his popularity plummets.

He directed the Environmental Protection Agency to suspend federal clean-burning gasoline rules this summer that are forcing consumers to buy expensive new gasoline blends.

Bush temporarily halted shipments to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve as a way to get more oil on the market and try to combat prices that have soared above $3 a gallon.

But he acknowledged that Americans are in for a tough summer on the road.

"Energy experts predict gas prices are going to remain high throughout the summer. And that's going to be a continued strain on the American people," he told the Renewable Fuels Association, a group advocating expanded use of ethanol as an alternative fuel source.

Bush, his own popularity hitting a new low, is under pressure to do something about soaring gasoline prices in hopes of staving off a potential election-year problem for Republicans trying to hang on to control of the U.S. Congress.

yes, let's get rid of those hippy-dippy, namby-pamby, tree-hugging, frog-locking environmental regulations. god forbid we change our behavior or buy more fuel efficient vehicles or demand competent public transportation.

Right - lets penalize the Gas companies for price gouging by giving them more profits. Freaking unbelievable. I'm ready to explode from the continuious smoke blown up my ass by this administration.

Bush is so shockingly stupid.

I heard somebody the other day calling him manifestly insane. That might be true too.

Due to federal and state regs, different parts of the country run on different gasoline blends. Refineries are set up to produce a single blend only. When there is a gas shortage in one area of the country, that makes it makes it much more expensive to get that particular blend to the area in need. Production is much too inflexible because of the regulations and that contributes to the volatile prices.

Not to mention that modern fuel injection systems automatically determine the best fuel-air mix for emissions control. Reformulated gas is more or less obsolete.

Details that otherwise get lost.

By eliminating certain limitations on supply, the market will be less volitile.

irrelevant.

the concern shouldn't be about price. concern should be about reducing damage to the planet and moving away from fossil fuels as our primary source of energy.

not to mention $400m retirement packages.

Reformulated gasoline is designed for vehicles for carburetors. It has very little environmental impact on fuel injected vehicles, which have been in production for about two decades. Bush's proposal is to get rid of some of these boutique gasoline blends forced on consumers by Congress.

Also irrelevant.

forced on consumers by Congress? this is an area where the government has every imperative to meddle with what we can and cannot consume when it's completely obvious that the consumption of gasoline is both damaging to our national security as well as to the natural environment. consumers should seek to change their behavior so that they spend less on fuel rather than having such environmentally necessary regulations repealed. and don't think for a moment that the repeal would be short term. this is another step in the dismantling of virtually all of the post-1970 environmental regulations.

Also irrelevant.

yes, but it's so easy to hate all those chins ...

Then it would probably be logical to set the entire country to the most efficient/eco-friendly blend and stick with it. Period.

Wrong thread, but: I hate Bush.

Okay, I don't really hate the man, just his policies, his way of thinking, his mannerisms, his face, his voice, and the way he looks like his clooking (um, that can't be how you spell the word I'm looking for) like a chicken when he wants to make a point.
