brokeback mountain

This will be interesting to see how the general public responds to this when the movie is in wide release. Look at all of the backlash Alexander got over its homosexual themes while it did much better in Europe where this is more accepted.

No way did Alexander chicken out on the gay themes; I can't comment on Brokeback because I haven't seen it yet but we'll see what happens.

I didn't see Alexander but I remember the "freak out" over it - how explicit was it?

Wasn't it Jared Leto and Colin Farrell? I'm asking merely for scientific purposes of course

I think Alexander flopped here because it wasn't good, I don't think any gay themes had anything to do w/ it.

my understanding is that, yes, "Alexander" did indeed suck and that's why it bombed.

in order to save face, Oliver Stone chose to blame the movie's failure on the inclusion of homosexuality and that Americans were too prudish/bigoted to deal with it so they stayed home.

convenient excuse.

once again: blame the gays!

Well I blame it on Oliver Stone's gigantic ego, that's the reason he made that completely lame excuse. Pathetic.

Come on, if you can't have box office success w/ Colin and Angelina...I for one wouldn't mind just staring at Jared Leto in some skimpy Greek outfit for a couple of hours, but even that couldn't get me to see it after I read the reviews.

I didn't see it, so I'll take your word for it.

It is opening here, by i think we, the australian public by and large are a lot more open minded about homosexuality etc etc

I just get annoyed that its even talked about. Who freaking cares?! Why is this even a talking point. I can't believe people get het up about stuff like this. Its so taaaaaaame *rolls eyes*

And yes, every woman i know loves a straight gay acting man. Its the reason metrosexuals are around today. Grooming my ass, its all about getting MORE ass!

I find it interesting that he uses the word homophobia

"Jake Gyllenhaal dished to December’s issue of Entertainment Weekly that he was “super uncomfortable” while filming sex scenes with co-star Heath Ledger for the upcoming gay cowboy flick, “Brokeback Mountain.” The 24-year-old actor said letting go of “that bit of homophobia” in order to “try for a second to be vulnerable and sensitive” was “(bleepin’) hard, man.” In the end, though, he was able to succeed, if only for “milliseconds.”

It still infuriates me that [many] guys freak out over gay scenes in movies...but lesbian scenes are encouraged.

double standards

it's getting rave reviews and is now considered an early dark horse contender for Best Picture, which would probably include the amazing Ang Lee for Director, and Heath Ledger is getting raves as well (though my money is still on Phillip Seymour Hoffman for "Capote" ... he deserves some sort of gold star for that movie).

I saw an early review on Ebert and Roeper over the weekend and they raved about it was well. I believe it's out on Dec 19th.

I'm interested in the historical aspects of this film, so I'll probably see it.
