Bono poll at MSNBC

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
I can't believe that so many people responded to the poll...it's over 7,000 now...that's great! Bono must be right...people are listening!

about an hour ago, there were 8500+ votes. Now, it's:

Should the government take Bono's advice? * 9630 responses

Yes
85%

No
12%

Not sure
3%

So 15114.772 socialists responded on the internet? Wow, Bono for teh new Jesus!

I'd bet it's a lot of U2 fans flocking to vote in the poll, as they tend to do whenever there's an online poll about anything in regards to U2. I'm surprised there's not a thread in EYKIW commanding everyone to go vote.

I think a lot of this response is the result of the email sent by the One Campaign directing people to go vote.

Personally, I think this was a brilliant strategy.

Really? I'm surprised The One Campaign sent people there to vote. It's not like an internet poll is going to cause anything to happen.

Dear Friend:

Today, Bono addressed the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington D.C., reaching across divides to ask policy makers and faith leaders to do more to beat global AIDS and extreme poverty and calling on the U.S. to give an additional 1% of the budget to this fight. Read more about the event on www.one.org/blog/.

Should the U.S. take Bono’s advice and devote an additional 1% to beating AIDS and poverty? Vote in an online poll now!

In his speech, Bono said: "It must be an emergency when an Irish rock star is being invited to speak at the National Prayer Breakfast and the House Democrat annual retreat all on the same day. And it is. Because in this long day 6,500 Africans will die of AIDS and 110 million kids won't get to go to school. The good news is that politicians on both sides, and more importantly the people who elect them, are all joining as ONE against AIDS and the extreme poverty in which it thrives. The great news will be when the effective programs to beat AIDS and extreme poverty are finally fully funded."

I wonder if you would get similar results if the money was coming directly from the pockets of the responders.

:eyebrow:isn't that the point? the money has already been taken from their pocket. they are now giving their opinion on where it should go. :eyebrow:
is that ok with you?

There is no direct correlation between the amount you want the government to spend and the amount that comes out of your own wallet.

You can say "increase foreign aid by 1% of the total budget," but few will say "increase my taxes another percent".

more people would step up to pay more taxes for a 1% increase in aid for the poor than people would pay up to support a multi trillion dollar war. what right have you to judge other peoples convictions? what about you? if you were paying for this war how would you feel about it? well don't worry cause we will just cut more "inefficient" programs and leave it for your grandchildren to sort out and pay for.

Are we missing a point here...its not about where money is coming from or who is going to open their wallets. Its about people dying everyday....

And just so no one asks...yes I do belong to the One campain, I voted for Bonos program. I give to my church and constantly give to Samaritan purse an organization in which Bono is also affiliated with run by Franklin Graham.

i am sorry to stir the waters JCOSTER but it really bothers me that someone thinks they can judge peoples convictions. even if it is a silly online pole he has no right make such assumptions about where peoples hearts are in relation to their wallets.

you are absoloutly right. it is about people dying. which is why i am so appauled when people don't understand that it is about justice. instead the cynics are trying to put a price on peoples lives.

it is very curious, the theory about u2 fans flocking to vote, because there have never been these kind of numbers in any music related polls u2 have been apart of. and those are polls that you can vote in as many times as you want. i think it is begining to shows that a lot of people are ready to do what they can for the One campaign. maybe it is foolish to think that but i am optimistic.

I don't think Bono is asking the people to have their taxes increased. He does not ask for money from the people. He wants goverment and religious organizations to step up to the plate and help. Something in his speech related to people living in their mansions up on the hill... inother words...does the white house really need new china? Do they really like how many christmas trees in the white house one isn't good enough...and the stupid chocolate white house they spend a fortune on every year.  :shame: I can go on and on.

But I do think Bono is refering to such splendors.

By the way, Ali drives and old Volvo, he drives his Masarati, I know his house is beautiful but this is someone who gives $ all the time and thought that for his 30th birthday his swimming pool was the greatest gift.

We can take it from the tax cuts for the wealthy. They can put off buying that ivory back scratcher for next year.

Anyway, I voted "Not sure," actually. I'd like to know where our existing contributions are going and how much of it is being used as intended--and how much of it is being wasted through corruption. I don't think anyone wants that hypothetical 1% to go to corruption.

Melon

from what i have read corruption is being tackled by private firms now-a-days. firms like Price Waterhouse have been hired to keep tabs on the money and how it is being spent. does anyone know about this in more detail? can someone with a larger understanding than I tell us more about this?

I scream PORK...F'ing cut the pork and give it to the poor.

thank you!
