I think this was a good decision, but I probably think that because I am anti-death-penalty all the way, all the time. Humans shouldn't have that kind of power. While it's a lame-duck kind of thing to do, I'm sure no one in Illinois was shocked by it, given Ryan's well-known and long-standing conviction against the death penalty.

martha - gov. ryan has been and currently is being investigated for a number of scandals. one of the most appalling is the license-for-bribes scandal in which there were state employees selling drivers licenses to around 200 or so truckers in return for bribes. one of the worst results of this was a fatal accident involving a trucker who bought his license in illinois. he ended up killing six children.

governor ryan has basically been surrounded by scandal most of his term.
Thanks , SF.

I don't see how U2fan42 can make the leap from this to the death penalty thing, though. How is it selfish of him to commute death penalty sentences?

Martha-- it could be considered a political move because Gov. Ryan is leaving office on Monday, his term is over. Some people could think he's trying to protect his legacy. If he saves an innocent person from death, people will forget about the other stuff. [and actually, I do remember hearing that the license for bribes thing was a common occurance before Ryan because Sec. of State. Not giving him excuses, just another side of the issue.]

(I still agree with what he did.)
