Well that's what I'm asking for...context. I don't who this "your great Governer" is, for this isn't happening in every state. So until then I can only make generalizations such as you did.

The law is stupid. Here's the problem, you don't like your neighbors cat? Ok shoot it, if does have tags remove them and you're scott free. Come on, we can do better than this.

Are we running out of fun animals to hunt?

Can you elaborate? I agree that feral cats are a HUGE problem in some areas. They are a signficant threat to the populations of native bird and rodent species. Most of these cats don't have any predators above them on the food chain b/c of de-forestation, urban sprawl, whatever. Unfortunately, nothing is ever done b/c they're "cats". Feral cats and domestic cats are not the same though. I'm a cat lover myself - have two of my own and will be fostering another for the summer - so I'm torn on the issue. There must be SOME solution out there though. I dunno, it just seems weird that (here for instance) you can trap and kill an animal like a skunk because it's destroying plants and animals, but not a feral cat simply because it looks too much like someone's pet.

Ok ... I am from Wisconsin and would like to clear up a few things regarding this issue.

Frist, I doubt cat hunting will be legalized anytime soon.

The vote taken during the Wisconsin Conservation Congress meetings this week are only advisory to the Dept. of Natural Resoures (DNR). The issue that was being voted on is whether or not the DNR should feral cats should be in the category of "nuisance animals" like opossums and skunks

If the DNR changes the status of feral cats, the state Legislature would have to change animal cruelty laws, which now protect all cats .

If you ask me, the way the Wisconsin Conservation congress definition of "feral" was a bit too broad--essentially any cat that is not wearing a collar is a "feral cat," leading opponents to argue that cat hunters will shoot first and check for a collar later.

Wisconsin hunters are not always as careful as one might think--my uncle has a yellow lab that he takes hunting with him has been shot at during deer hunting season; cows have been shot and killed during hunting season; people have been shot and killed. How one mistakes a human or a dog or a cow for a deer is something I don't quite understand--sometimes a rustle of leaves is enough to make a hunter shoot. For some hunters it's a shoot then look mentality.

Back to the issue at hand ...

People for "cat hunting" argue that cats are a menace to bird populations. Opponents dispute the figures on the bird and cat populations in question. They argue that cats are more apt to be scavengers and rodent specialists and that a small percentage of their diets actually consist of birds. If the feral cat population declines significantly, does the rodent population increase? While not a native species, what role do feral cats play in the "circle of life?"

As I said, I doubt this will happen, unless there are legistaltors looking to lose their seats.
