Ask The Messianic Jew....

Yea, I'm hitching myself to the bandwagon.

I was born & raised as a secular Jew and came into Christian beliefs on my own. Jewishness is as much a culture as it is a belief system and I still retain that and feel it isn't such a strech for me to believe in the NT as much as the OT.

Fire away.

I don't know if I'm qualified to speak for Jewish people about anal sex Mr Brau...I'm sure some do and some don't.

No I do not wear a yarmulke, if that's what you meant....I'm a girl.

I'm not involved with JFJ....know nothing about them really to be honest.

We had a lady from JFJ come to our church once and share some of the Jewish customs with us and explain some of her ministry. It was incredible. They seek to educate people on Jewsih traditions, as well as witness to the Jewish community. It's a great organization. There's more at www.jewsforjesus.org if you're interested.

What led you to accept Christ? What did your family think?

I'm glad you started this thread. I think Christians gain a far deeper understanding of their faith by knowing the Jewish roots. My wife wishes she was a Messianic Jew so she would have that deep background.

What traditions of the Jewish faith do you miss the most?

What from the Jewish faith do you think Christians should learn more about (i.e., participate in a Sedar dinner)?

Basically, I was a secular Jew all my life. When I say secular I mean that while I didn't go to temple and all that I still considered myself Jewish. The thing with Jews is that it is as much a cultural thing as it can be a religious. It is not uncommon to have people identify as Jews who have never learned a lick of Hebrew or gone to a temple. So while I considered myself Jewish, I also was basically an atheist.

To be honest, that began to change for me at my first U2 concert....I kid you not. (I can post an essay I wrote about this experience if anyone wants me to)

Well, after that I felt I believed in God but didn't know what to do or where to go. Anyone ever see that Woody Allen movie where he does the same thing and almost 'shops' around for a religion? That was sorta me. Growing up I've had a lot of exposure to different faiths....my father follow a Hindu spirituality and I've been to India several times myself and have seen the scene. Buddhism really fascinates me, but left me with a lot of questions. I found alot of beauty within the Hebrew Bible but I lacked a sense of personal attachment to it on it's own. I've perused through a lot of faiths and I have respect for all of them...there is much beauty in how spirituality expresses itself.

Through a strange series of coincidences, or fate, I ended up getting invited to a church service. As I sat and listened to the pastor I heard him say he had grown up in NYC as a Jew....my ears definetly perked up then. I ended up meeting with him and then began a series of several meetings where he really explained to me the deep connection between the OT and the NT. It was near Passover time and he invited me to his house for Passover sedar dinner. I was surprised. A Christian celebrating Passover? I had never been to a Messianic Passover Sedar dinner, and it was an amazing experience for me as I had been going to Sedar dinners every year, and this one had the most spiritual impact. All the riutals and things performed, such as the breaking of the bread, really came alive as the pastor went through the meal and explained how it tied together and I could see the connection between OT and NT really mesh.

A week after that I had several people pray with me, I had never done that before and at first was concerned about feeling awkward. Well, for the first time since that U2 concert I had that same feeling...That same tangible feeling of being in the presence of something otherworldy. I got baptized two months afterwards.

My family. Interesting response. Like I said earlier, my father has always been into Hindu based spirituality and that seemed accepted by the family. Well when this little lady said she believed Jesus was the Son Of God........eyes rolled and tempers flared. One in particular was bad...You know all those stereotypes about old Jewish Grandmothers? They're all true. She had a bird! My mother was very supportive of me however and last summer she came to visit me at my church and she accepted Christ during that same service.
