Ask the conservative Christian...

What, for you personally, is a 'conservative Christian'?

(I ask because I know a number of people who call themselves Conservative Christians, but all of whom have seperate ideas of what actually constitutes the title)

Oh you're not the only one...but there aren't a lot.

What denomination are you?

I think there are levels of conservative Christians.

Do you believe that women should be able to have leadership roles in the church?

Do you have any issues with "the Church", and if so, what are they?

LOL

I consider myself conservative, and Christian, but I am not a conservative Christian so what the heck am I?

Compare your church with the Southern Baptist Convention. Living in the Bible Belt these are the conservative Protestants I run into the most (I'm excluding conservative Catholic Christians, I run into far more of them, for obvious reasons).

Actually, I don't consider my theology to be that conservative. It's more "conservative" compared to people that arent' Christians than compared to other Christians. My worship style is very conservative though. I'm not a huge fan of "contemporary" worship in any way. I'm not conservative in a fundamentalist sense, but I believe in certain doctrines that most of the world seems to label "conservative", such as no free will. I also live a relatively conservative lifestyle, but for me that's mostly a personal choice.

I am Christian Reformed (which is different that plain old Reformed). My ancestors are all Dutch and come from Dutch Protestant communities so we follow along that tradition.

I believe men and women should have equal opportunities in the church and anywhere else in society. My church has deacons and elders of both sexes (and it's usually a pretty equal number of each). We've never had and women pastors, but there is a woman pastor that's a Professor at my college and she often sub in at our church when our regular pastors are on vacation.

I do have issues with the Church as in a hierarchical structure such as the Catholic Church, but they're mostly theological differences. Sometimes I wish I belonged to a tradition that was so powerful and unchanged for so long. I think the fact that the Protestant churches answer to no one but God is sometimes our biggest strength and biggest weakness at the same time.

No, IMO God hates no one. Even if being gay is a sin (I'm not saying it is or I think it is, but some people do), who are we to judge one sin against the next? I've never understood how some churches will basically shun gay people, but ignore the alcoholics, porn addicts, and greedy stock brokers at the same time. It's very hypocritical, very judgemental, and just makes "Christianity" as a whole look rediculous.

May they fear being corrupted or corruption.

Ooops.... when I saw porn addicts, I thought you meant shunning porn stars. Wait... your post doesn't make sense. They shun both?

No they don't. I mean, my church doesn't shun anyone, but some churches make such a big deal out of gay people, the gay people are basically driven away. But these churches often ignore the fact that the rest of the congregation all lives with one sin or another. For some reason they seem to think being gay is more of a sin than being an alcoholic or a greedy person. IMO, people in general do not have the right to make these judgement calls, period.

God doesnt hate the person, he hates the sin. Thats why he sent his son, who is blameless to absorb his wrath for the sin inside the human race.
It is a sin to be gay. Its a sexual sin, just like premarital sex or rape, and the like. Its all the same. Its a sin just like judging somebody or being greedy.
God doesnt have a sliding scale or a grading curve on sin, it just is. The great thing is that were not all fucked. We ask for forgiveness and then its gone. Off our record, which I need on a daily basis

When it's your own thread you can spread your interpretation of scripture or why you think this or that is sin, but until then this is not the thread for it.

oh is this your own thread? I thought this was a public forum. Sin is sin. Plain and simple. I was making a point that gays arent any worse than the person that does something like stealing a piece of candy from the grocery store....

No not mine. It's been understood in here that the 'ask the ____ ' threads have been about the author where in this hand is LivLuvAndBootlegMusic. If you want to debate what's sin start your own thread.

okay, gotcha. that makes sense.
sorry I got all defensive, I thought you were saying something other than what I thought. I dont frequent FYM often because its generally hostile and stress is detrimental to my health

I'm honestly not too familiar with the Baptist chuch. I've never been to one and I don't think I know any Baptists, so basically all I know is what I've learned in theology class, which deals with their theology and not how they actually worship. I think I'm going to answer your question a little later. I remember learning about the Baptists, but I need my notes in front of me in order to make any sense.

What are your opinions of Dr. James Dobson, Pat Robertson, and Jerry Falwell. Admirable men? Good guys with bad public relations handlers? Psychos?

Don't know anything about any of them.

OK, I Googled Jerry Falwell and I'm pretty sure I would despise him. According to wikipedia he's a fundamentalist Baptist pastor. No offense to any fundamentalist Baptists in the house, but I think I have more in common with a Muslim.

Sorry, I'm not really into televangelists or "Christians in the media" type debates. I'm not evangelical or fundamentalist so I usually have nothing in common with these people.

Neither am I. Interesting how some are caught up believing that conservatives are generally into them.

Exactly. I say this all the time on FYM. I have no interest in the evangelical or fundamentalist churches. Bleh

Please people, only post if you are going to ask Lies a question!

You know that wasn't my point. It's like if I came into your thread and started talking about how the death penalty is a sin. It wasn't the right time or right place, I think you would be able to see that.
