Uh . lets see ....I have been a witch for 16 years, since I was 18 or so. I practice reclaiming/feri style witchcraft (based in ecofeminism, and the belief that the political is spiritual as well) , and yes I do spells. but not often. oh, this is fun.
Do any of you know any other obsessed u2 fans that are pagans? Not that it matters, just wondering. I get along with beliefs and non-beliefs of all kinds, just as long as your not a bible thumper!!!

I like paganism... no I´m not one, more the ethnotype.. into witch craft, witch doctors, natural herbal medicines, stuff like that. Also a Roman Catholic who is into Rasta and Zen and Vodu. I like the pagan meetings though.. samhain, things like that.

Well, paganism encompasses all the things you mentioned (even roman catholic is debatable...) I am a bit of an eclectic myself. The witchcraft I practice has alot to do with honoring your ancestors, so being american, that's alot of different cultures to blend and keep happy. You know, great grandma wants her irish whiskey on the altar, others are more happy with sauerbrauten!!! Anyway, under my definition (and many others) you are a witch. Nice to meet you!

I'd like to sing one of Bono's "hallelujah's" to learn that there are other pagans on this list as I never would have guessed it. Nice of you to come out of the broom closet.
This might seem strange to some, but it's Bono's lyrical spirituality and the spirituality of Edge's guitar and Larry and Adam's tribal rhythms that bring me home every time.
Although I practice paganism, honoring the 8 high holy days and dislike the anti-sexuality aspects of Christianity, Jesus remains thoroughly in my pantheon, personal belief system.
Listening to the new record and many of Bono's comments from the shows and I think of Unitarians. Unitarian churches may be one of the only places in America outside of anti-war protests where pagans and christians do ritual togeter.
My parents are devout Christians, but they've done ritual with me, and I've gone to church with them.
I'll stop ramblingfor now, but let me just say I'm thrilled to see this post!!!

Hallelujah and Blessed Be indeed! Yes, U2 and witchcraft always made sense to me... Sex, spirit, and rock n roll. I think Prince is the only other one who really gets that ( but he has gone a little nutters in recent years) Oh, and the late great Jim Morrisson. But Bono is the Man... I esp. loved it when he said, I think right around the time of Actung Baby that they (the band) often get their love of women and God confused!!
I wanted to tell 'em, there is nothing to confuse, that's just the Goddess dancing with you.

What exactly are spells to you? Similar to rituals?

Spells are specific, get you what you want. Rituals can sometimes encompass spells depending upon the intent of the ritual. However, sometimes rituals can serve other purposes or many purposes- communing with the Gods/Goddess and ancestors and fey, celebration, thanks, or a good old fashioned party of sorts. It's all about the intention. The best part about rituals? No sin, no sermon, no guilt, no barganing for a little something good. If you want something, make it happen, all things are possible.
And by the way, this is just my opinion. Witches have a variety and often times contradictory number of views on the subject.

Some people think I'm a witch because I have a bunch of cats, a scary dead tree in my yard and long dark hair.

No, but I've seen a little African artwork, actually, not very much. My influences are from all over, '60's psychedelia is where I started, then got influenced by Delacroix, van Gogh, lately Middle Eastern (Turkish, Arabic and Persian) and Chagall.

Seriously, are you offended by the portrayal of witches in stories and movies? Do you think Wizard of Oz was fair, because it had both a bad witch who was the villian and a good witch who was the hero?

I try to not get offended by stuff. Most of it is so sci-fi unreal as to be something else altogether. Things like "the craft" are just funny because they are so bad and off the mark. Everyone dips into the same collective unconcious well and pulls up different things.
As far as Wizard of Oz is concerned, I think the wicked witch was totally in the right in getting her revenge on Dorothy- the bitch dropped a house on her sister!!! Plus, one of my favourite books is Wicked by Gregory Macguire- a retelling of that tale that makes it much less black and white, much more about the gray areas of life and the nature of evil in general.

I only get offended when christians refer to halloween as a "satanic celebration" rather than what it is-Samhain- the end of the old year for witches and a time to honor the dead and help those to pass over who have recently died. I mean, I have to put up with Christmas so I think they should just be a bit more respectfull and do a little research!
Now, stonehenge is a funny story. I was there one summer solstice years ago (after making a much more important spiritual trip to Dublin to visit some u2 related sites) and lo and behold it was closed. Apparently local Druids, hippies, new age nut bars, etc. were turning it into a circus on the solstice so they just closed it down for the day. Did not really disapoint me too much, the drinks at Docker's and seeing Windmill Lane was way better....And for old sites I prefer Newgrange. Way creepier...

Yes there are lots of interesting pagan sites in Ireland especially in that region. There is currently a big debate in Ireland over whether a motorway should be built close to Tara Hill in Co Meath (not that far from Newgrange) which is also a significant site for pagans.

Interestingly enough Tara Hill is also a site of significance for Northern Irish Protestants so pagans and Northern Irish Protestants are united in opposing the motorway plans.
