Argh.

I watched his speech last night.

Is this guy pompous or what?

"Don't be economic girlie men".

Is it just me, or is anyone else offended by this? I consider myself as liberal as the next guy (I'm actually a member of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party), and this idiot has the balls to call liberals "girlie men" after he already got in trouble for it!

He's just so arrogant!!

My respect for Arnie dwindles day by day.

:tsk:

Seriously, if that got you angry, then I feel bad for you. You must not be able to walk outside your house without getting enraged.

And he got in trouble for it? By who? Oh yeah, the liberal media. He laughed when they approached him on it. Its an old Saturday Night Live joke, how come I never heard you bitch about Dana Carvey saying it? I guess it was funny then when a mock-image of Arnold was saying it.

Please grow up and get some tougher skin.

If you are offended by Guhrly Mahn statements then boo-frickin-ho, he wanted to make a point and he made it very well - by getting uppety about it it simply reinforces a negative stereotype of liberals as cry-babies. Take it like a man and quit whining ;).

Schwarzenegger is living proof that America is the land of oppertunity, he didn't get to where he is by sitting back and complaining; he did it through steroid abuse, group sex, blockbuster movies and smart business investments.

Dave, I'm offended by the title of your thread. It insinuates that conservatives engage in oral-anal sexual activity. I'm asking that you apologize and that this thread be removed.

DaveC -

I agree with you - the "gurlie men" phrase needs to be retired from politics.

It is offensive to many (including women) and shows a real low level of political maturity in its spokesperson.

Why is no one at this convention talking about the MILLIONS of American jobs lost and the MILLIONS of Americans thrown into economic disaster during the Bush administration?

 Embarassed maybe? :tsk:

He's a misogynistic low life, and his past behavior hasn't been indicative of a governor, I dont know why we'd expect his current/future behavior to improve.

:lmao:

Ok, so maybe I overreacted a bit. I was a little out of it when I watched the speech ( :drunk: ) so I did get kinda uppity about it.

This line made me fall off my chair. You're the greatest. :lmao:

I don't think you'd have taken it too kindly if Barack Obama had said it at the DNC to refer to Republicans.

It doesn't offend me that he called Democrats "girlie men". I'm not that sensitive. Hell, my dad has used it since I was 7 years old when he made fun of Arnie. It just seems that "girlie men" is a term straight out of the 1950's. It's more that he seems to be mocking women rather than Democrats. Which makes me uppity because I wasn't raised that way, and as shallow as I may seem to some around here (see the Beach Volleyball thread in FYM), I do have the utmost respect for women and I know that women are every bit the equal to men.

Using the term "girlie" as an insult is more of an insult to girls and women than it is to the man it's directed to, IMHO. That's what's got me more upset than anything.

I've taken much worse insults than being called a "girly man".

Arnold Schwarzenegger is still a pompous ass.

And he can still kiss mine, stammer.

I personally don't think that term, "girlie men" is in the best of taste. Just a personal preference. Your mileage may vary.

Ok, seriously now. "Girlie men" is not the best line to use in the political arena. It borders on childish, it's rather silly, and it's just one of those lines that you think in your head, "this might be funny . . . but it's just probably not a good idea."

Still, I don't think it's something to throw a fit about. It's a reference to an old comedy sketch that was making fun of Ahhnold in the first place. He's just making a poor attempt at humor. If you don't like it (which unfortunately may have a lot to do with your political stance ), rolls your eyes and move on.

There's a lot bigger things in the world to worry about than whether or not "girlie men" is offensive. Let's not miss the forest for the trees, people.

And Dave, maybe you should try to spend some time around Ahhnold, you just might get your wish.

O.K. folks...lets start at the very beginning.

It is was great how the networks would should Maria after every remark he made about the Democrats - and she sat there like this: :| And she made a comment to her son after his first comment..I really wish I was a better lip reader.

BUT, the bigger issue...this guy said he joined the party because of Richard Nixon (and he was applauded). I guess if you WANT to be associated with that political sore point in American history...great.

Arnold brings a great "entertainment" factor to the Republican party. He was a good person to have speak...the political conventions are there to rally the voters, and Arnold is one who can do that.

I was thinking the same thing. Nixon? Do you really want to go there?

I just can't believe no one has commented on how he compared the democrats to communists. "Girlie men" gets 2 pages within a matter of hours, but "I heard Humphrey (democratic presidential candidate of '68) saying things that sounded like socialism ? which is what I had just left" gets nothing. Strange.

change the world "girlie" with something racially slanted and you would see everyone complaining about it. But it's ok to ignore comments that degrade women.

You don't have to have a rally over it, but people should understand exactly the message Arnold's statement sends: anyone who acts like a woman is wimpy, stupid and laughable. Excuse me for expecting more from state leaders.

there's so much to complain about in that "speech"! :p

 Mrs. Springsteen

whoops. i tried to fix my previous comment by putting in the exact quote from Ahhnold and i made a new post. ignore.

That REALLY pissed me off. As a "former" DFL'er (a Minnesota Humphrey Democrat...the Democrats in Minnesota call themselves "Democratic Farmer Labor" party) - I really resented that comment. Despite what was going on in 1968 in Chicago, I feel that we would be much better of now if Humphrey was in office instead of tricky Dick!

I'm sorry olive, but I just don't see how in the context of the original SNL skit, this phrase is offensive to women. The skit was funny because it was portraying the arrogant and ridiculous attitudes of these fictional German bodybuilders. It's not meant to be taken seriously, and Arnold was just playing off of that, especially since the characters were built off of him.

Without that context, yes, it is offensive. To imply that women are whiny, weak, or inferior is unacceptable. But I just don't think that's what happened here.

Is that really the message it sends? I don't see it (or even remotely believe it).

If so, where was the outrage when Hanz and Franz used the phrase repeatedly?

NBC, join me on my couch and have a french fry :D :

I think there is a stark difference when someone uses these terms in a sketch comedy, and when someone uses it as an elected politician as a rally cry.

How can you NOT see the difference?

Rally cry? I think that's a bit dramatic. I don't remember anyone chanting "Girlie men! Girlie men! Girlie men!"

It wasn't a good idea. I'll always admit that. I just think that all people (including politicians) should have the right to make a humorous reference to pop culture without everyone taking offense. There were plenty of things to rip apart about Arnold's speech last night. This just wasn't one of them.
