Thanks to all of you for the excellent feedback. I've had an unexpectedly harried weekend and haven't had time to thoroughly read over all your responses yet, but I certainly will as soon as I get the chance. It looks like several of you have recommended the same handful of (from what I can tell, adult-oriented) quality graphic novels. I will certainly have to look into some of those for my own interests.

As far as the manga goes, I think, as melon said, I shall have to be proactive and take responsibility for a little advance research, just in case. It's just that it's always a little unpleasant to contemplate having to do these things--the older children get, the more potential there is for an adversarial relationship to develop over their leisure time pursuits, and that is something no parent ever looks forward to.
