Anybody know of anyone who was physically effected by 9/11's aftermath?

I lived about 4 blocks from ground zero and I could smell the burning debris for about 6 months after the attacks. I have devoloped some breathing problems that I believe are related to the air quality in Lower Manhattan at that time. Just wondering if anybody knows of anybody else with similar problems.

You are probably correct. I read reports of this several months back.

wolfwill23, I am sorry to hear of your ailment. The three people that I knew, did not survive. I have heard many stories of the firemen and women having difficulties. I am sure there are many stories on the web about it. I hope some relief from the breathing difficulties you are having. What does your Doctor say?

I work a block away (still) and live downtown. I had a hacking cough that I could not lose for about 6 months afterwards. I was not sick, and could not tell the cause of the cough.

I went to the doctor, and then a specialist for xrays. The specialist told me my lungs were perfectly normal, and the cough was probably due to the 11th, but that my system was kind of raw so the cough continued. He was pretty well versed in what kind of chemicals were down there air-bourne and let me know there was not much to worry about.

My cough has been gone for a while now, and I feel fine.

Please understand that although there were many many strange chemicals burning during that timeperiod a minimal amount was asbestos as they did not use it to its full extent at WTC.

They started using it in one of the towers, then stopped due to its ban.

If you are still feeling the effects from that time (I am a beleiver that my cough and probably your ailments are definitely directly related to what happened) I think you should go to the doctor and get chest xrays as soon as possible.

I am not sure if there is anything you can actually do, but your doctor will let you know.

Hope you feel better - let me know how it goes...

Horrors. I'm sorry to hear about your problems. Damn terrorists. My sister was then living in lower Manhattan not far from the WTC. She had to stay with friends in Brooklyn for six days because there was too much smoke around the building where her apartment was. If she hadn't been able to stay in Brooklyn this crud might have happened to her. Ugh.

Same thing happened to my boss -- our office was across the street from the trade center and a group of us were two blocks from the south tower when it collapsed. He went to the doctor and had some of the debris in his lungs. I believe his doctor prescribed some sort of inhaled drug to cleanse his lungs.

As ouizy mentioned, they only used asbestos on the first 30 floors of the north tower and the collapse caused the asbestos to be decimated -- the particles were too small to stay in your lungs and do any damage. Although at the same time, I can tell you that I breathed in alot of other debris -- I remember actually feeling chunks of paint and drywall in my throat for a few days. It was a mess and lots of tiny particles and dirt. I would suggest going to a doctor in NYC and see what they say.
