What are America's alternatives to war in this situation? I am asking this of all those of you that are against the war.

I hate war. I don't want anyone in the world to ever have to suffer and young lives to be cruelly cut short, but I've been thinking long and hard about this situation and I haven't really seen any other alternative. So I ask you, those of you that are adamantly protesting the war, what other choice did we have? What else could we have done?

I swear this post has come up like three times in some form or another. There is a post by Henry Rollins (a.k.a., rougerum) that posed the same question.

See: http://forum.u2wdd.org/u2feedback/Forum11/HTML/000677.html

I really no longer see the point to talking about the war on this forum. Anyone who criticizes the war is quickly dismissed and no one even looks at the original posts anymore. I think, from now on, I'm just going to cut and paste the expected responses.

Can people perhaps get it through their thick skulls that not every post criticizing America is done by anti-Americans? A year ago, the government was evil and needed to be restrained to prevent it from infringing on everyone's rights. But now that we have a Republican in office, I see that big government is okay, but that "big government" has done many questionable foreign policy actions during the last few decades, and, rarely, is it for anything else than selfish reasons--meaning that as long as the enemy is killed, it doesn't matter what happens to the nation we targeted afterwards.

Sept. 11th hits and now the revisionism starts. Vietnam, suddenly, is glorified. America is now the world's moral crusader, protecting the world against evil. Now it has never been wrong. And if you question that, you're evil. You must love terrorism. You must hate America so much that you should move to another country. And it's attitudes like that that have been turning me off to this forum as of late. No shades of gray it seems; just black-and-white extremism.

I've survived through many ideological shifts on this board, but this one is quite the most disconcerting. I think I know why I've disliked patriotism in general most of my life. It's not the fact that one loves their country; it's all this baggage that comes with it: intolerance, revisionism, supremacism, etc.

To quote a line thrown at me, "Get over yourself!"

Melon,

I'm looking over the thread you're referring to. What I see is:

-General nonsense

-Melon pining about how pacifists are being condemned as "un-American," just as he's doing here

-Melon and some other guy posting some rather vague comments about how the US should "re-evaluate the US's role in the Islamic world," "change the environment so that bin Laden et. al. don't have the right environment to support their ideas," etc.

-U2Bama making some substantive comments, noting that Israel hasn't been treating Palestinians fairly, but also suggesting that Osama bin Laden really does want Israel removed.

What I don't see are concrete suggestions from the pacifists about how the US is supposed to defuse the threats to our nation's security. Melon, your response to the question posed here does absolutely nothing to answer the question.

I'm sorry Melon, I had not read that, but still as speedracer has said, I have only seen some people complaining about what the U.S. is doing to handle the situation and really nothing in the way of an alternative solution. And actually Henry did not pose the same question. My question was far more direct in exactly what I want to know.

I think people have every right to scrutinize and criticize what is being done. We need that. But when we have a problem, we need to come up with solutions, not just complain. That gets us nowhere. I just don't feel that many of the pacifists here have given this enough thought. My question still stands.

Well, speedracer and Babble, I cannot answer your question at hand, because I've made it clear that I don't think there is an alternative to war here. My criticisms, mostly, have been on the unintended baggage that comes with it: excessive nationalism/patriotism, historical revisionism, implicit censorship, and the potential for news propaganda.

there's no alternative to trying to bring justice to those who committed this horrific crime

justice achieves more than revenge
