American beheaded in Iraq

http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/meast/...ain/index.html

"In the video, a man identifies himself as Nicholas Berg, 26, of Pennsylvania and is shown sitting in an orange jumpsuit in front of five armed, hooded men."

"The one standing directly behind Berg reads a statement identifying himself, and then Berg is pushed to the floor."

"Berg is heard screaming as his throat is cut. One of the captors then holds up his severed head."

"Berg was not a soldier or a civilian employee of the Pentagon, the State Department said."

"In suburban Philadelphia, Bruce Hauser, spoke for the Berg family."

"Hauser said Berg owned a company that cleaned and repaired communications towers in Iraq."

"He said Berg's family learned about his death Monday and is devastated by the news."

I don't know what to say..last night watching the news I just felt so deeply depressed

Sometimes it feels like "humanity" has sunk so low that it is truly hopeless

Welcome to the wonderful world of Iraq's freedom fighters.

I will go out on the streets and protest the day we surrender the Iraqi people to these animals.

I agree. Unfortunately, I don't think it has changed much since man began to walk the earth. We just now have global news. It really makes you wonder if the world can ever be peaceful.

I do think one still has to try and military might will never be the vehicle to get there.

I feel the same way. Is "civilization" some romantic, illusory notion that doesn't really exist? I hate to sound so cynical but I can't help it.

This is really terrible i feel so sorry for for Nick Berg, his Family and Friends.
Another man who was simply unlucky being at that place to this time.

Of course these murders say "revenge" but that's no excuse treating an innocent man that way.
And where can be revenge if you murder somebody just because he has the same nationality than somebody who murdered a friend of you?

I hope these men will be brought to justice (and yes exactly these men and not other men who have the same nationality)

Many Iraqis say they oppose the U.S.-led occupation but also despise insurgents whose suicide attacks, mortar strikes and bomb blasts have killed far more Iraqis than Americans.

Issa al-Khalidi, a 65-year-old pensioner sitting in one of the oldest coffeehouses in Adhamiya, also condemned the killing but looked around nervously as he did.

"It's a brutal, inhuman act. As Muslims our religion prohibits us from committing such acts," he said.

"People with their own interpretations of Islam are coming to this country and killing left and right, and the Americans are just providing them with the pretext to do so."

But some of the city's poorer residents said they supported the killing, arguing it was acceptable retribution for the abuses the U.S. military had committed in Iraq.

"This is the price they have to pay for what they have done," said 33-year-old Omar Khateb, a labourer.

"It was done according to Islamic Sharia, and the Americans should know that there is a price they will pay for the atrocities they commit."
I believe that, unless America and the rest of the Western nations are serious about raising education levels and ending poverty for third-world nations, we will never have peace. Never. And I think that neither America nor the rest of the West is serious about entertaining this concept ever, because it would involve far more than shooting "terrorists" and throwing money at the situation.

All of this, of course, is too late for Iraq. Now it is a guerrilla war between American troops and religious fanatics. I swear...religion has killed far more people than it has saved. :P

That is absolutely sick and disgusting. I can't believe it happened in the 21st century. They call this 'revenge'? At least the Iraqis with panties put on their heads still have their heads.

I agree. This situation is going to keep poor parents sending their kids to Wahhabist madrassas. Peace? It's not going to happen with this state of affairs. How frustrating.
