Actually Sex Doesn't Sell

I agree w/ what this article says about being uncomfortable about watching graphic movie sex scenes in a theater, I am a bit. I'm not uncomfortable watching it at home, even though honestly I prefer the more subtle, more romantic content.

I admit the graphic language in Closer was a bit uncomfortable-I thought some of the older people in the theater might run out

I don't think that necessarily makes one "puritanical" as someone says in the article

Yet, teenaged sex movies always make a ton of money. It seems sex sells when it's in a comedic or unserious context. People get uncomfortable with "truthful" or "life-like" depictions of sex in Hollywood movies. Why the difference i wonder?

Sex won't save a crappy movie......

Some of the movies sighted just didn't have a compelling story worth watching.

the addition of sex or violence is usually the easiest, cheapest, and least thoughtful way to create conflict, which is something all drama needs. often, it's laziness -- and acute attention to maketing demographcis -- that determines the amount of sex or violence one sees.

Maybe it's more being uncomfortable being in a large group of people like that. I mean, most people don't experience that many people watching them So maybe that transfers/translates somehow when you're watching others.

Let's face it, sex with a pie is not a normal, everyday occurrence for most people. Well, at least I think it isn't

Sex sells - to teenagers and young adult males. Perhaps that is a more accurate representation. Although the offshoots of sex (body image for example) are huge cashcrops. Go to your local 7 Eleven and look at their magazine rack. 85% of their magazines have large amounts of human skin being displayed on all types of magazines, from Vogue to Muscle and Fitness. It really is astounding if you step back and really look at it.

I think it also depends on economics.

If your budget is tight--and right now it seems to be for many Americans--which movie will you go see? Probably not the gut-wrenching sex drama, you know? And if you have kids, you'll pick something everyone can see.

I think that is very true.

The whole watching/hearing graphic things around other people doesn't bother me unless one of those people is a relative, esp a parent.
I think that graphic sex scenes can detract from a movie and that is all people will talk about. I suppose sometimes they want that though because 1. it covers up how crap their movie is or 2. it will draw people in because they want to see what all the controversy is about.

True, porn is unbelievable popular. But my interpretation of the original post was that sex sells products that otherwise wouldn't sell without the sex. Straight out sex obviously is very popular, but there isn't much else there.

I tend to agree with this.

How many of us would pay $8 just to see Nicole Kidman take it off?

If the sex is the only thing worth watching, you might as well sleep through the "plot."
