This is similar to my "Favorite politician" thread, but this time, name who you like that is your opposite on the political spectrum. For example, if you consider yourself liberal, pick a conservative, and vice versa. If you're "in the middle", well, I don't know.....

Some of my favorite conservatives are:
Tucker Carlson (he and I know each other...cool guy)
Chuck Hagel
John McCain
My Sen. John Warner

Those are the main ones I can think of at the moment.....

I like Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA). He's running for reelection and I will probably vote for him because he's a moderate Republican.

Sen. Charles Grassley from Iowa (my state). He's not exactly the most charismatic figure on Capitol Hill, but he's an honest, genuinely nice guy. He's just about the only Republican I've ever voted for.

I thought long and hard about responding to this thread, but I can't come up with a single name. Say what you will about my character.

I was going to say John McCain is someone I respect, but I'm not so sure anymore. He's the closest though.

Jesse Helms was great fun...couldn't admire or respect him, but he was good for laughs. Wasn't he the guy who kept a drawer full of porn in his desk so he could show people how bad it was? Haha! Yeah, I always thought "smut fighter" was a delightful job for a secret porn lover. I mean, think about it -- you get to see all the "smut" and still get to be a pillar of the community.

John McCain. I actually voted for him in the 2000 election -- wrote his name in on the ballot.

And Reagan. When he died, I started to read alot about how shady some of the stuff he did was -- Iran Contra, trickle down economics and the like. But I was a young kid in the 1980s and I always remember him as a good guy back then.

I liked him at one time, until the Antia Hill hearings in 1991. He was so disrespectful towards her in the questions he asked her, due to Clarence Thomas. My vote will be going to Hoeffel in the PA election.

I think of myself at the center of the political spectrum so i don't know what the oposite might be ;)
But well in principle i respect every human being - including politicans

There is one extraordinary person from the Conservative German party i'd like to mention also i wouldn't call him "Oposite political direction"
Dr. Heiner Geißler
http://www.heiner-geissler.de/
His views and his politics was outstanding and he never was a "partisan politican".
on the other end of the spectrum, the former Socialist party of the GDR "Gregor Gysi" also i disslike his politics and his views i have to admit that he is smart and his speeches are exelent.
I'm glad he isn't a right-wing populist - because he'd do an extremely well job there too

We are calling John Mccain a conservative? Wow we like to stretch it around here. My vote is for Zell Miller.

Are we calling Zell Miller a liberal? Talk about stretching it ...

Clinton is kinda :cute: sweet & amusing. I don't respect him as a GREAT leader or anything. I just think he holds himself in a very cute way.

sarah it's funny that you say that. I've always been rather attracted to Bill lol.

But, that doesn't answer the question cuz i am a democrat.

He's not a political leader but I have always seen Billy Graham as a person of compassion. I have a great deal of respect for anybody that tries to be comassionate.

The man is arguably the most intelligent president in the past 50 years - I think he is very close to Jimmy Carter.

Bob Dole. I have always had a lot of respect for him even though I didn't vote for him when he ran against Clinton.

He comes across as an intelligent and compassionate man who is also very likable and willing to listen to the other side.

He also has a great sense of humor which made him seem more "human" and obtainable as far as politicians go. This asset was unfortunately downplayed during his presidential campaign, as his advisors told him to play the stiff conservative and ditch the humor so he could be taken more seriously.

Plus, I don't know about other people here that remember, but I felt real bad when he fell off the podium... and felt even worse that the media kept harping on that one incident.

Are you talking about Clinton?

Ok, in Australia, people of opposite politics, I'd say Alexander Downer. I don't agree with a lot of the policy, but he does his job well.

If it's the US, Colin Powell for the same thing. You've got the least popular US Administration in forever (in international terms), but Powell is still so highly respected by everyone. I think it's because he speaks the way the whole Administration should (eg he actually answers questions properly) and I do think he's the only one there who actually sees a bigger picture. So while I still disagree with him on many, many points, at least, unlike the rest of his 'crew' (Bush, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Cheney) he appears to think things through.
