Speedracer, I wasn't trying to get on your case personally, just to explain what I think are the major factors that account for the U.S.' poor behavior in some regards.

I partly agree with your point. I do agree with you that the average American (and especially the above-average American in terms of income) should be willing to accept a slightly lower standard of living for others' sake. Part of this may involve a willingness to pay more for certain goods, and to buy from companies with more fair policies.

But I completely disagree with the idea that American corporations are "forced" to raise prices. Big corporations in America rake in billions of dollars each year, and benefit from lax tax breaks and weak antitrust laws that make us the laughingstock of most other Western countries. These companies are greedy - they are simply unwilling to accept lesser profits in exchange for fair policy towards human rights, etc.

Most of the extra cash is in the pockets of corporations and executives (and their investments to make more money), not in the pockets of the average American consumer.
