ONE love, blood, life
Marriage is a coming together for better or for worse, hopefully enduring, and intimate to the degree of being sacred. It is an association that promotes a way of life, not causes; a harmony in living, not political faiths; a bilateral loyalty, not commercial or social projects. Yet it is an association for as noble a purpose as any involved in our prior decisions.
--Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas, writing for the majority in Griswold v. Connecticut, 1965
I read about Griswold in a news article just now and needed to refresh my memory about the case, and when I read the majority opinion I found this beautiful little statement from Justice Douglas.
I don't want to get too politicial about this, but I really wish that people saw marriage in this way in general. And that we could, as a society, finally give same-sex couples a way to legally share, recognize, and celebrate what Justice Douglas was talking about.
