the loud, conservative, politicized ones who Falwell/Dobson/Robertson all pretend to speak for, and who Karl Rove actively courts when he refers to "the base." generally white, rural, midwestern and southern.

OK, thanks for clearing it up. I hate that word. Basically, if you're a Christian, you're evangelical. There's no way around it. You believe the Bible and you seek to share Christ with others.

According to your definition, "Right Wing Republican" sounds more appropriate.

I don't know about the definitions in the US (you've got too many churches ), but here in Germany the Catholics are no Evangelicals.
There are Catholics, and there are Lutheran Protestants.
Former are Catholics, and the latter are Evangelicals.

Is that different in the US?

I would say it depends on who you talk to.

By definition, all Christians are evangelical and "born again," yet both of these titles are given to describe certain types of Christians. It's all pretty goofy, but I guess they're better than the possible alternatives.

Well, the cool thing is many denominations are working together simply as Christians. The denominational lines are being blurred, which is nice. It was, after all, Christ's final prayer that the church be as one.

Yeah it's a word that has a lot of baggage associated with it. I think the difference is there are some that lead by example and share out of humility and compassion, and then there are those that preach from a soapbox and try to cram their own message down your throat.

Evangelicals are the "Christians" who claim to be "born again".

They declare that all:
Jews
Muslims
Hindu
Buddists

are going to Hell, because they they're not Christian.

They claim that Mormons, Seventh Day Adventists, Jehovah Witnesses and at one time, even Catholics weren't Christian.

They are the judgemental bible thumpers that are in your face trying to persuade you that their form of Chritianity is right and yours is wrong.

Here are some pictures I've linked to popular Evangelicals who you may recognize:

Plus the Evangelical that condemns Oprah and Mormons:

http://www.liveprayer.com/

All you need to do is open the link above and you'll see exactly what an Evangelical is.

Based on some of the posts of this thread you can see what Faith is more Christian than the other, Mormon or an Evangelical.

I'm glad that my Church teaches that all good people of Faith that help the their fellow man in this life can one day make it to Heaven.

We also do not condemn misguided Evangelicals who condem us, libel us, misrepresent our beliefs but are taught to forgive them.

We leave that all up to God and stay busy serving our fellowman regardless of what faith or persuassion they are.

None of those guys speak for me, btw. They've each used the faith for personal or political gain, which is disgusting.
