But what will happen if there's no more sanctity of marriage to preserve? I love how all these men want to preserve that, meanwhile women don't want to marry them and/or wish they hadn't

It's working well so far.
Same here! I'm seeing the whole "sanctity of marriage" lose its steam more and more. I just see it as more of a social thing. My belief is that God has already brought the two people together. God is already present in that love. Sometimes I feel like the actual ceremony of marriage is just to keep the priests in their position of authority and to please the public because it has been so ingrained in our society "go to school, go to work, get married, have kids." like it is expected. eff that! and i don't like thinking of marriage as "an institution" either. it pisses me off that the gov't is so involved in something so personal. yes, i'm sure there are reprecussions to not getting tax breaks or whatever. but for me, personally, i just find it meddlesome.

love is love. i don't need a certificate to prove to my community that i am committed to my beloved. that is already written in our hearts.

What's better-to be married just so you won't be called a "spinster" or whatever the male equivalent of that is, or to not marry for whatever reason? Society and others (and stereotypes and prejudices) should not dictate anyone's decision to marry. If you go into marriage for any other reason other than the fact that YOU want it and with that person, and you and you alone are making that decision- well in my opinion it is starting out the relationship on a very bad note, and it will suffer. In many cases it might even be doomed.

I don't think so. It's from an old 70s song: Don't Rock the Boat.

I'm listed as a spinster on my marriage certificate.

Spinster used to be just a term meaning an unmarried woman. It didn't have negative connotations.

while i agree, that certificate gives you 1049 tax breaks and a whole bunch of social respect that's otherwise unattainable.

yes, validate me. i am a whore for social validation. maybe i do need to be told that, yes, i'm good enough, i'm smart enough, and gosh darn it, society respects my relationship enough to recognize it.

but then again, what you don't have you don't need it now ... i suppose.

I'm sure you will find a lot of men who have similar feelings about their marriage too.

oh don't get me wrong, while i don't want to get married myself, and i don't like how marriage is in bed with the gov't, i'm going to fight for your marriage rights until the day i die, because it is just stupid to legalize discrimination, regardless of whether or not i'm taking advantage of the law myself. regardless of my personal preferences in marriage, you DO deserve validation and social acceptance!

i gotcha back yo!

of course men who don't get married are accused of being afraid of commitment and just want to sleep around

it's never men i hear complaining that they wish their other half would get off their backside and ask them to marry them and if they don't do it sharpish they're leaving. then a lot of women apparently wish they hadn't married them in the end.
