But, why the f*ck do we even have the Electoral College????

It is the stupidest concept in any election process.

I don't see how you'll get rid of it.

Maybe if someday you have a candidate who wins by 8-10 points and loses the electoral college, you will see an immense shift. But mathematically speaking, such an outcome is unlikely.

And you will always find 13 states who will never and I mean NEVER agree to an amendment in this regard.

anitram's right, I don't expect it in our lifetimes.

forget those 13 states

we only need 11 or 12 States to drive a stake through the heart of the Electoral College

National Popular Vote -- Electoral college reform by direct election of the President

Dixville Notch the little town in NH that votes at midnight went Democratic for the first time in 40 years and only the 2nd time ever.

15-6 for Obama. (It went 19-7 for Bush in 2004 and 20-5 for Bush in 2000)

Speaking of the Electoral College...this rather nifty graphic from yesterday's New York Times shows each state sized to represent the relative influence of its individual voters in a presidential election. The numbers show how many EC delegates each state has, and how many eligible voters each of its delegates represents.

After 2000 I re-thought the Electoral College.

All the stuff I was taught about it being a good idea so the big states would not dominate the small states, soon went out the window.

mathematically

a candidate could lose the popular vote 78% to 22% but win the electoral college

This system, along with the winner-take-all practice used to allocate most states’ electoral votes, creates the potential for an absurd outcome. In the unlikely event that all 213 million eligible voters cast ballots, either John McCain or Barack Obama could win enough states to capture the White House with only 47.8 million strategically located votes. The presidency could be won with just 22 percent of the electorate’s support, only 16 percent of the entire population’s.

I'm not a great fan of Starbucks, but free coffee is always welcome. :)
I just read that Krispy Kreme and Chick-Fil-A will be giving away red-white-and-blue donuts and fried chicken sandwiches respectively. So if you're a good liar, you can put yourself together a yummy all-American picnic of coffee, donut, sandwich and ice cream tomorrow! Admit it, no socialist country would ever offer you a deal like that.

You are right, couldn't imagine socialist Germany creating such incentives to vote. All the former GDR could come up with was putting an armed VoPo ("Volkspolice") behind you to help you with the ballot.

But mind you, I live in deep Montana. Neither a Ben & Jerry's, nor a Krispy Kreme, nor a Chick-Fil-A. No all-American picnic for me. :(

Today's date - November 4, 2008 - will be a date that high school students will study and memorize for their history tests decades and centuries from now; as far as I'm concerned, there's no doubt about it - today is the day that we as a people will elect the first African-American president in our nation's history!

I am farther away.

I am most upset about missing out on my free vibrator though. At $15, it's worth a hell of a lot more than the $.99-2.99 food giveaways.

God Bless America, indeed.

Just got back - took less than an hour and I got a nifty little "I voted" sticker, too. People who are thinking of staying home should go just for that sticker.

I'm calm yet anxious. I'm going for a run in a little while so that should clear my head some.

PS - I'm missing Tim Russert today already. :(

I'm so excited for my first time voting.:hyper: I'm about to hop in the shower, and then I'm going. I'm going to be a nervous wreck at work tonight.

The first time is the best.
I vividly remember pushing the vote button on my machine back in 2004 and I felt like I made a difference.... oh.

i too, hope for this very thing! well said. It gave me chills reading it.

Pulled the lever for Nader, Hawkins for Congress, Yes on a prop for Veterans...

But then also had to vote for a bunch of Dems because there weren't any third party candidates in like five of the local elections.

I don't do Chick-fil-a, they're a big contributor to a lot of right wing causes.

El charro and Dominos are 2 more to avoid.
