I feel very enlightened today, since I've never heard of packzis before... maybe you say "ponk-chee"? Based on my extremely limited knowledge of Eastern European linguistics. (anthro major!)

I haven't taken enough classes to know any more than that...am I even close?

Why the long 'oo'?

All my Polish friends always called them pohnch-key.

^^^Well, some words we say/pronounce a bit differently in the U.S. depending on our accent, and this could be a variation. But Detroit has a large Polish population, and this is how our newscasters say it and dictionary.com phonetically spells it
