"selling out" is part of being a rock band. anyone who critisizes that has failed to understand the concept of record deals, top40 radio etc.

commercials/ product deals are getting more important for new artists (in that case not U2 but there´s a scheme behind that) because the music industry refuses to pay decent royalty rates and continues its vast overspending habit regarding promo etc.
