Hopefully there are some computer geeks out there in cyberland who can explain to me exactly what an IP address is?

I also would like to know exactly what are 'cookies'?

My boyfriend and I would like to know how we can get protection from identity theft, as someone we know has gone through this terrible ordeal.

Would simply installing a 'firewall' protect us from this happening to us?
