the point of the game is to roll a 7 of the comeout roll ( first roll)
if you do, you win the bet you placed.

if the first roll establishes a point number 4,5,6,8,9,10.
you want to hit that point number before you roll a 7. if you hit a point, and roll a seven before that point is made, this is known as seven out, and you lose. There are many more side bets that can be made, but you just have to watch with someone playing and learn.
