2. Key in the first three digits of your phone number (NOT the area code)

3. Multiply by 80

4. Add 1

5. Multiply by 250

6. Add the last four numbers of your phone number

7. Add the last four numbers of your phone number again

8. Subtract 250

9. Divide number by 2



Do you recognize the answer?

We have 8 digit phone numbers here. It missed the four digit but otherwise the answer is correct.

I think that doesn't work when the last 4 digits of a phone number begins with a zero.

I don't know about the last digit being zero, but it worked if the first digit is a zero ~ 0555

steps 3, 4, 5, 8, and 9 are basically (in a roundabout way) getting you to multiply the first three digits of your phone number by 10,000. then you add the last four digits (twice, dividing by two in step 9) and, presto chango! you got your phone number!

as a math teacher, i find getting my students to make up their own number tricks is an excellent way for them to develop a facility with working with numbers. this is a good one!
