listening......

nope, im pretty sure its about watching porn via sattelite services, listen to the words.

and an interesting side note, the guitar sounds a little like thrill me at a slower tempo.

whoever said theres no guitars on this album need to listen to it again.

woop there they go again to kick off numb. i must be taking crazy pills

Bono from Into the Heart

"It's a song about watching and not being in the picture. About how people play with images, believing you know somebody through an image - and thinking that by manipulating a machine that in fact controls you, you can have some kind of power. It's about the illusion of being in control."

There are references to the supermodels "cover girl with natural grace" but it is also about voyeurism. He mentions that porn beamed into your home by satellite tv could seem like a benign calling compared to the CNN coverage of the Gulf War.

Hope that helps.

ok are you contradicting me or agreeing? the quote is basically backing up what i said its about, of course he's not going to come right out and say it.

there might be submeaning that spawned from the core but its about porn. read:

watching your bright blue eyes in the freeze frame
(pause)

ive seen them so many times i feel like i must be your best friend
(wearing that tape out, bono?)

cover girl with a natural grace
how could beauty be so kind to an ordinary guy
(good looking pornstar knows what shes doing)

comin home late at night to turn you on love
(obvious)

checkin out every frame
(obvious)

ive got slow motion on my side
(obvious, he's taking his time with it lol)

with the sound and color under my control
(obvious)

round and around goin down
(hmmm, fellatious?)

baby face

tin foil hair all tied up in lace
(you got me on this one, tin foil hair is new to me)

bittersweet girl wont you give me a taste
(cant compete with the real thing)

how could beauty be so kind to an ordinary guy?
(either he's talking about the male actor in the scene or himself for getting to see her)

open your door let me unpack my case
(spread eagle shot, time to break it out, *zip*)

youre everywhere child
youre all over the place
(all positions)

coming to me from outer space
(thats how people watched porn back before the internet, satellite)

how could beauty be so kind to an ordinary guy?

Ignoring the Into the Heart comment, which pretty much closes the case, I actually never thought of it as LITERALLY being someone behind a camera or on a tv screen. Just a way of describing an encounter or experience or even relationship. Both a way of explaining how the girl is thought of, and perhaps an understanding of the distance between him and the girl. I guess it still kind of fits, thinking you are in control when you are actually being controlled or whatever, but that's just my take. Describing an experience or relationship as if it were a late night porn viewing says a lot in it's own way.

I simply relayed what is stated about the song by Bono in Into the Heart. Relaying information is in itself neutral. One person commented that they thought it was about Naomi Campbell, someone else mentioned porn. According to Bono both are correct is a sense but it is more about the voyeurism aspect as well as the idea that we think we control the tv but it really controls us. He was using the image of a guy watching porn to portray this idea. And a cover girl is a model so there you get your reference to Naomi and the others. So in a sense everyone was right but not completely. All I was trying to do was provide some information on what Bono said. In the end even that doesn't really matter because an individual's own interpretation of the song is no less valid than what the creator intended Even Bono says he often doesn't really know everything he's on about in a song and often Edge tells him what his subconscious has dredged up. For me personally everytime I hear the song I tend to picture Mulder from the X-files parked in front of the set watching porn and I don't remember if that image was with me from the beginning or if I heard the porn theory and then came up with that.

The major change on Achtung is the influence of electronica on rock that was pretty common at the time. Infusing a sort of dance beat into your rhythm section. That's where the carry over is into Zooropa, further delving into that territory, where the electronica influence is starting to take over further both sonically and structurally. Zoo Station vs Bottoms in one way, Zoo Station vs Zooropa in another (I have no idea why you think Zooropa the track is an 'Achtung' track).
I actually think it's almost a crime how closely linked Zooropa is to Achtung. It's another major swing IMO.

But surely Zooropa-Pop is an even greater swing than Achtung Baby-Zooropa.

I've always heard it this way, and I'm sure most other fans do too.

It is for this reason, combined with the whopping gap between the release of Zooropa/Pop compared with Achtung/Zooropa, that strengthens the link between Achtung-Zooropa, and also for the fact that ZOOTV was a tour that encapsualted both albums.

By having this link between Achtung Baby/Zooropa, people tend to consider them as part of the same era, and are hence prompted to decide which album they prefer over the other.

From a personal point of view, the "carry over", is much more explicit and obvious from Achtung to Zooropa than Zooropa to PoP.

(Zooropa the track will always be "Achtung sounding" to me, but again that's a personal thing.)

gotcha

but as i stated before, i think zooropa represents the tv station zootv. each song is a different channel or show. starts off with the intro/pledge of allegiance and ends with the siren/off the air color bars. babyface is just the porn channel, the first channel of the record, and for good reason

i think theres more thought put into this record than people realize. they mightve spent 6 weeks on it but i believe it was conceived around the same time zootv itself was. i would imagine they were like yeah! zootv a television station as a concert tour. complete with characters such as the fly, mirrorball man, macphisto, the army dude etc, hey we should make a record that acts as a soundtrack! brilliant! then pints of guinness were promptly slammed back.

did anyone here say whether or not they could hear the static throughout the record?

on a properly imaged stereo system, its located in front of the music front and center television set style, thinly veiled.

oh and regarding the hold me thrill me thing, place it in a tracklisting right between daddys gonna pay and some days, its seamless. it gives the last half of the record the boost/kick it needed. much like the fly did on achtung baby. could do without the violins though to make it a perfect fit. the sounds and instruments are right in line with the rest of the record, including bonos voice. could also do without the echo in his voice too. im sure the violins and echo were added for the cinematicky effect. if it were on the album im sure it wouldve been a little more tame. like any other album version/single version theyve done.

Oh my God you're right, I'd never thought about that before!!

its too late and my sarcasm detector is a little fatigued so im unable to make a judgement on this. im going to bed :|

what else would it be about?

thats kind of why i never understood why people on here arent too fond of it. its got everything, sexy guitar slides, blow up doll references, nice structure, falsettos, and a crotch heavy dizzying video.

 big  for EBTTRT
but this thread is about Zooropa....

Zooropa is what it is. technology, sexuality, globalisation, obsession, heartache, anger and angst and looking for yourself all in one album.
it's no AB, but it is good.
