I heard that the version of THTBA that plays at the end of Gangs of New York is different from both the original version and the soundtrack version. Is this true? Has anyone heard it?

Do you mean the Academy Awards? U2 didn't perform this song at the Golden Globes, although they won an award for it. The exact reverse occurred on Oscar night.

yeah, they didn't perform at the Golden Globes, they performed at the Oscars. Anyway, the version you know is best, but the soundtrack version is interesting. It's on the soundtrack basically.
Just a bit less U2 than the song seems. And new instruments.
