James were fantastic weren't they? I bet most bands would kill to be able to release a best of as perfect as James' 1998 one. 'Out To Get You' is another favourite of mine.

Just listened to Born of Frustration......excellent and U2ish, a bit.
Were they popular in the United States, and are they from the 80's??

BLM.....get into jAMES.They are my second fave band. Brian Eno has produced them too.
They started about 1984 i think. Were never really a big act...and dont think they made it in th US.
Trust me...i reckon if you like U2, then you will like James. Excellent frontman in Tim Booth too. Does this groovy dance during songs like a trance or something. I really cant reccomend them highly enuff. A Very underrated band

Also....Mark Knopler was born I glasgow and lived there for 10 years before moving to Newcastle, hence the "geordie" accent

I second this. Laid is a totally incredible album. I also own Seven, The Best Of and Millionaires and they're all great.

Great great band GMAN, incredibly underrated. I think people in general just asociate them with "sit down". Their albums are brilliant and very U2ish. Laid is my personal favourite. For the Eno vibe everybody should check out their Wah Wah! album.

U2 are my number one faves and always will be, but since 2000ish those artists in the pack behimd have caught up considerably, I'm just not quite as obsessed as I used to be, a lot of their newer stuff just doesn't reach me on every level which basically everything they did prior to that did. SOme tracks though, like TGBHF, Fast Cars, Stateless, ELectrical Storm, Mercy and COBL are of a similar standard, but others for me just aren't at all, such as Miracle Drug, Walk on, All because of you. That said, U2 will always be my number one.

1: U2

2 The Pogues-Shane MacGowan

3 Radiohead

4: Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

5 Kraftwerk

6The Smiths

7 Bowie

8 The Prodigy

9 Air

10 Johnny Cash

I was gonna comment on Snowed Under before. Really, anything by Keane is  So refreshing for a band without a guitar player!

And Brit... I see you're quite the Madonna fan!

I liked Keane when they first came out and couldn't quite place why they sounded so familiar....then I started to listen to Travis again. Now I just listen to Travis.

Anyway, my top groups, in no real order just depending on how I feel on a given day (for example NIN are probably much higher now then they normally would be):

U2
Nine Inch Nails
Dave Matthews Band
Radiohead
Muse
The Arcade Fire
Porcupine Tree
John Coltrane

and in all honesty I listen to about as much symphonic music as I do any of the above artists. But that's not really what we're talking about here, and I probably couldn't pick a favourite composer anyway.

Pogues

1. Pink Floyd (+ solo Roger Waters)
2. Radiohead
3. Queen
4. The Beatles
5. Ludwig van Beethoven
6. Muse
7. Nick Drake
8. U2
9. Echo And The Bunnymen
10. Dire Straits

The list changes every now and then depending on my mood, but U2 definitely aren't in the top five anymore. Still top ten.

1. U2
2. NIN
3. TOOL
4. PRIMUS
5. THE TEA PARTY
6. + all the other old 'dinasour' greats

(suprised not more U2 fans were into NIN...Reznor is a genius)

I think historically, U2 is certainly my favorite band -- I've loved them for so many years. But in between albums and tours, I'm less passionate about them. When the new album comes out, I'm sure they'll be the clear #1.

Yeah see that's exactly how it is for me

well here are my top 10 according to last.fm :

1. U2
2. Alien Ant Farm
3. Bloc Party
4. Muse
5. Radiohead
6. Dredg
7. Outkast
8. Bright Eyes
9. The Fall of Troy
10. The Beatles

That's fairly accurate I suppose. The order may not be perfect but it doesnt really matter, theyre all bands I love. Rage Against the Machine, Wilco, Interpol, and The Velvet Underground are all definitely up there as well.

My Top 3 have been etched for a long, long, long time . . . but #4 and #5 have definitely varied a lot over the years, with Pearl Jam, Led Zeppelin, Tori Amos, Bjork or The Cure filling the spots at one time or another, but for the past year or so, my Top 5 has been:

#1 U2
#2 Radiohead
#3 Underworld
#4 Bloc Party
#5 Pulp

:applaud: I love ALL of those bands!

U2 is and always will be number one for me. :)

Other bands/artists I love very much:
Jeff Buckley
Queen
Bob Dylan
Leonard Cohen
Led Zeppelin
Muse
Depeche Mode
Placebo
The Doors
Janis Joplin
Pink Floyd

The Police, Sting, Goran Bregovic, Michael Bublé, Alanis Morissette, Keane, Rufus Wainwright, Prince, Alicia Keys, Norah Jones, Joan As Police Woman, Tori Amos and a lot of European, lesser known/unknown bands and artists.
