what makes achtung baby so experimental?

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

It's a cliche, but if you want the rock sound I would suggest Steve Albini. He would not allow them any gimmicks. It would be what they played in that room, and without gimmicks and remixes and all that shit, if it wasnt rock, it probably wouldnt sound very good.

I can hardly imagine an Albini-produced U2 album. That's like a Bush-produced summit on global warming. (Bush the man, not the Albini-produced band! which is/was equally lame.)

Hehe.... I saw that.

THINGS YOU DO NOT EVER MENTION OR QUESTION ON A U2 BOARD:

Sex, drugs & Bono's hair.

THE CORRECT ANSWERS OR RESPONSES ARE:

They have never even held hands with anyone other than the partner they are currently with!

Never of course! NEVER! Only Guiness is okay cos it's Irish!

It's real!

Bono's hair is NEVER real! He never puts his hand through his hair now when 10 years ago he was doing it all the time. There are extensions in there or a hair thickener or something cos Bono's a slaphead. That comes from a proud to be slaphead! Come on Bono show us your a slaphead and be proud of it!

That wasn't the point. The point was the assumption that because the music was dark they must be on drugs.

I think there have been plenty of threads on drugs, and the boys have been for the most part pretty open about drugs. I haven't seen any evidence otherwise to think they all went through a PERIOD of experimenting with drugs.

Honestly I can care less about Bono's hair but it's obvious you haven't seen him this tour yet. He still does it all the time.

Yep I see them at Manchester this year. he doesn't do it all the time. I just don't understand the need to cover up the fact your bald. It's like The Edge. I reckon the coolest he has looked is when he was on the Pop tour when he didn't wear the cap but he always wears that stupid cap. As if we don't know he's bald. Come on The Edge show us your a slaphead!

The thing is, it seems some fans wish U2 had stayed in that same dark place, even though that would've destroyed the band, particularly emotionally. Listen to bootlegs from later in the Popmart Tour: that's not a happy band. And I don't think commercialism and a lack of success can be blamed for that, as they had quite the opposite! In Europe, they broke the world record for the largest paying crowd to see a single act without support (150,000 people at Reggio Emilia) and finally played in Sarajevo. They finally got to go to South America and played to packed stadiums night after night. And yet, despite that, the band were obviously not happy.

What happened to them emotionally after that? Well, I think we get a hinting at it with the story of Adam having a powerful conversion experience not long before the ATYCLB sessions. From the midst of the depression, U2 found hope. And hope is in much of what I hear on the latest albums. Beautiful Day, Walk On, Grace, Miracle Drug, City Of Blinding Lights, Original Of The Species, et cetera.

But how dare U2 make well-structured, inspired, hopeful music. How dare they express what they genuinely feel!

Haven't you heard? It's all about the USD now.

Regarding charts, I would love to hear exactly what on MTV/charts in US sounds like U2. (apart from obvious influences like Coldplay) With ATYCLB they competed against Outkast and Jay Z, and with Bomb against Eminem and Shania Twain.

I do recall Edge's daughter who said "have you listened to the radio lately?" when she heard the Bomb, and singles - in America, elsewhere U2 has no trouble - pretty much sinking apart from Vertigo.
