what guitar players does edge resemble the most?

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.

some George Harrison in there

Oh yeah, especially his slide work. I'd love for Edge to do some slide harmony work on the next record.

^ Interesting. How so? Not disagreeing, just curious what you think. I've only just recently started listening to Television.

The way he plays his chords. Very linear and icy.

And his arpeggios, they tend to follow these nice little repetitive paterns.

Now, Verlains likes to bend strings, and Edge almost never does that.

do you guys think that edge's guitar playing is too machine-like sometimes?

Tom Verlaine in that Edge's original style lacked any blues influence whatsoever. Very melodic.

Will Sergeant

I only found this video now, and I can't edit my first post so...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9hGWaCBb0Q

Will comes in at the 1:45 mark. Mmm, clean delay. His playing at 2:20 and onwards sounds similar to the kind of minimalistic playing that people think of as being 'unique' to The Edge on UF and JT. Not to mention the riff that starts at 2:53.

Ocean Rain is such an awesome song.

I totally agree -- I have Ocean Rain on my iPod and I was struck this afternoon by how Edge-like that sounds. Who influenced whom, because that song came out in 1984?

Well, Edge and Will have always sounded rather similar to one another since their bands' respective beginnings. Looking at album release dates:

Boy: 20 October 1980
Crocodiles: 18 July 1980

October: 16 October 1981
Heaven Up Here: 30 May 1981

War: 28 February 1983
Porcupine: 4 February 1983

The Unforgettable Fire: 1 October 1984
Ocean Rain: 8 May 1984

Every Bunnymen album came out before every U2 album, which seems to point to Will influencing Edge, more than Edge influencing Will. That's why I sometimes get annoyed by people claiming that Edge was truly unique in terms of his technique. I mean, that riff in Ocean Rain that appears at 2:52 in the video is absolutely typical of Edge's "signature sound." It's been a while since I've listened to any U2 album, so I'll have to take them all out for a spin again. But I can guarantee you there's a U2 song that came out later than 1983 that has a riff similar to the one Will was playing in that video. Melodic, simplistic, played on two strings and processed through a delay pedal...

The tone is only a small part of the story. It's the way Edge plays with that tone that makes him really unique. Big slashing chords are usually followed up with chiming arpeggios to complete the melody. "Out Of Control" is a great example. As those chords are fading there's a beautiful arpeggio ringing in. And the harmonics

He takes full advantage of the echo. Putting it to use with very minor chord changes to create these really powerful textures. "I Will Follow", "Beautiful Day", "Until The End Of The World", "Bad", "Miracle Drug", and the king of them all , "Pride."

I've still never heard anyone who sounds like that.

Will Sergeant comes close. Edge is still better and more interesting, no doubt about it, but they are both very similar guitarists in terms of tone and technique. You're a guitarist, Brau - try playing some Bunnymen songs. It really doesn't feel all that different to playing a U2 song.

Brian May

Both legendary guitarists from 2 legendary bands

both sing backing vocals
both had eras of embarrasing clothes
both change guitars during tours to get a specific sound
both have very very unique ways of playing
both can do the lushest guitar solos you can ever hear e.g

Edge-Kite solo from vertigo, solo during WOWY in Zootv Washington etc
Brian May-A Kind Of Magic live,Last Horizon,Who Wants To Live Forever etc etc

thats my opinion

Is Television good? Is it worth buying a CD? Which one?
