Digital Audio Tape

Superior to an analog tape. These are audience recordings.

I'm not sure what the soundboard is dubbed to. Could be DAT, could be CD. Anyone know?

DAT = Digital Audio Tape. It is a high grade metal based (I think) tape that records in digital, not analog like cassete tapes.

Usually bands like Phish etc. let "tapers" set up microphones near the soundboard and they send the signal straight to the DAT recorder.

Sometimes if there are extra outputs on the actual soundboard the crew allows pro tapers to tap directly into the soundboard thus the mic is no longer needed.

If you ever go to a show and see a bunch of tall stands next to the soundboard they are usually DAT mics.

Almost every band records their shows onto DAT as it is affordable and very good quality.

There are a lot od DAT traders and tapers out there...

it means "DAT goes there and DAT goes here!"

A DAT recording can be either a soundboard or an audience. It is simply the mode that a recording is made on, it does not signify what the source of the recording is from. As mentioned it is a digital audio tape recording and it is probebly the best portable recording medium out there though mini discs are pretty close also but not quite the same level.

An audience, soundboard or any other type of audio can be put on a DAT. U2 does record all their concerts on DAT. They now convert them immediately to CD after the show per their head soundman Joe O'Herlihy. (Can you imagine getting a hold of the crate or suitcase containing those on this tour!)

You wont see mic stands set up by fans at a U2 show though. U2 doesnt mind fans recording but they dont officially endorse it either (due to their record company). So those recording at U2 need to remain somewhat incognito as to what they are doing.
