The power of Music Awards

In the Brit awards that were given this week, Sting won a lifetime achievement award, just like U2 did last yeat. Well, the "Best Of" album of Sting and the Police returns in at #1! Yes, the album was long out of the charts where it had spent 152 weeks. Now it re-enters the UK album charts at the top spot after the brit award Sting won! We're talking about some influence, here!

Global Charts week 68/69 ATYCLB charts in 8 countries this week.

United States #26
Canada #19
Ireland #30
United Kingdom #97
Denmark #84
Netherlands #52
France #109
Switzerland #85

Global sales for the week for ATYCLB are about 70,217. 53,128 of that number come from the USA. Total Global sales for ATYCLB now stand at 10,365,217. About 3,485,000 of that number comes from the USA.

In Australia, ATYCLB re-enters the chart at number 46 after being out of the top 50 for a few weeks. Still got that 4x platinum certification though when we know it should at least be 5x platinum. I think the only reason the album has re-entered is some advertising on TV - now selling at some outlets for $20 Australian dollars.

On the Video charts, Elevation Live is at number 3 and on the DVD charts it is at number 5.

Hello,
From last week on I'm working on a different project for my company. I won't have much time to give many comments on the charts, so you just have to do with the numbers. Still, here are the results of the Dutch jury (Numbers courtesy of Mega Top 100, http://web.planet.nl/music/charts/megatop100/ ).
ATYCLB rises for another week, this time with 7 spots to #45 in its 68th chart week.
The total run of ATYCLB so far is:
1-1-1-1-1-3-3-3-6-7
6-5-7-6-6-6-5-6-1-2
8-12-16-25-30-36-38-40-45-48
49-43-39-39-45-42-36-27-15-7
6-6-14-25-29-39-37-43-55-47
38-65-60-66-69-80-81-65-57-61
44-41-44-41-56-58-52-45
(all information prior to week 40 with many thanks to Flying Padre Jr.)

The Best Of 1980-1990 has a big jump as it rises 20 positions to #53. It's now on the charts for 114 weeks.
The Best Of 1980-1990's (4th?) chart run is:
86-46-37-45-62-57-61-56-63-45
47-64-63-65-74-73-53

The #1 album in the Netherlands is still the CD with the (classical) music as played during the royal marriage on 2-2-2.

The #1 single is Shakira with Whenever Wherever. This is her debut here in the Netherlands (she never scored with her Spanish albums). Her album stays at #2 this week.

C ya!

The final numbers are in at Hits Daily Double. ATYCLB is at number 33, down 8 spots from last week's chart position of 25. Sales are listed at 37,922 or down 31% from last week. There were big drops across the board for most albums suffering drops between 20% - 40% so U2 are about average. Presume it must have been the holiday week-end in the USA for the sales spike last week.

Before U2's superbowl appearance, ATYCLB was tracking roughly at 20,000 copies per week. The increase in sales over the last 3 weeks has been huge - I have calculated that ATYCLB has sold around another 80,000 copies in addition to its normal 20,000 per week sales. If you add back catalogue sales, U2 has in total sold maybe 110,000 albums more than it would have under normal conditions - ahhh the power of TV revealed yet again. After this week, we can longer track the benefit of the Superbowl appearance due to the Grammy's effect, but the band and the album have benefited enormously - it sets them up nicely for the Grammy's if they do well. The 4x platinum is going to happen in 2002 - it is just a question of when. Predictions anybody

At the beginning of this year I said that ATYCLB would be certified 4x platinum (or sell 4 million copies) before the end of June. I still stand behind that prediction.

gearing up for week 70, it looks like a rise on the charts has already started before the grammys have even happened. Today (the day of the grammys) U2 is now at number 6 at Amazon.com, up from number 17 last week, and at number 20 at cdnow.com, up from number 40 last week.

It seems that people are jumping in to get the big nominees even before they win any awards. It looks like U2 and India.Aire are getting the biggest boost out of that as seen on this weeks hits chart.

Right now U2 is selling about 35,000 copies. If they were to win Album of the Year, Rock album of the Year, and any others, I would expect their sales to about triple, putting them in at about the number 3 position under Alanis Morrissette and Kylie Minogue. Although the grammy effect may be spread out over 2 weeks so U2 may not get that big of a boost all at once. It would be pretty cool for them to get to number 1 or 2, because that would mean that they would reach their highest chart position with this album 70 or 71 weeks after it was released!!

Hello,

SoundScan numbers are in again. U2 slides down 2 positions to #28 with sales of 36,086 (down from 53,128 last week). Total sales of ATYCLB are now 3,521,142.

On a Grammy-related side-note, Kirk Franklin's Rebirth Of Kirk debuts at #4 (with almost 91,000 copies sold)
