Week 68

No news so far this week, really, but this thread has to start somehow!! (It's a tradition by now)

One more week out of the charts for ATYCLB in the UK. Complete run so far:

1-4-10-20-25-26-28-29-29-23
17-12-12-7-7-8-10-3-6-8
12-14-23-30-39-41-49-54-65-60
53-47-47-58-65-56-47-37-30-23
22-15-16-23-34-42-53-66-83-76
74-60-50-57-69-83-71-54-61-60
64-56-60-76-95-98-OUT-OUT

I will keep counting, however, till the day it returns. I'm not giving up, still hoping! Although the situation now is by far more interesting in the states!

Andy

Hitsdailydouble.com is at 58.89% complete.

ATYCLB is at #23 selling so far 36,973.
Not bad considering the Super Bowl hype has died down....

Hits is projecting another big jump for ATYCLB. Currently sitting at #23 with 58.89% in they are reporting 36,973 units sold which projects out to 62,783!

U2 usually drops towards the end of their updates so I would predict ending up at #25 with sales of 60,000. Billboard may show them even higher if last weeks result was any indication. This is a great lead in to Grammy week which should boost them close to 100,000 copies IF they win 2 or 3 of the big awards including album of the year!!!!!! This could get them into the top 10!!!!!!!

I highly doubt that U2 sells 60,000 copies this week, not to mention that they were #25 on Billboard last week with 46,441 so I don't think 60,000 in sales would translate to #25 on Hits or Billboard.

Talk about slaying the messanger.

I was just extrapolating based upon the numbers Hits is reporting. Currently with 81.03% in (whatever that means), they show ATYCLB at #24 with 47,364 units sold which works out to approximately 58,452 if the final 19% of their reports to come in is similar.

The numbers have fallen a little from earlier but it still looks to be close to 55,000 sold when all is said and done.

cm,

No its cool your helping with the stats, but hitsdailydouble.com is not and has never been 100% accurate with Billboard. So we can only use hitsdailydouble.com to give us an estimated guess. Hits is usually a few thousand over or once in a while under Billboard sales numbers. Sorry if I came across harsh.

Damn I'd be shocked to see if sales when up this week! But the way it looks on hits, I'd say ATYCLB will only drop a couple of thousand in sales from last week. Not too shabby.

So it looks like ATYCLB will stay another week in the Billboard Top 40. How many total weeks has it been there.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it spent it's first 22 weeks in the Top 40, dropped out, came back for a week, dropped out again, and will now have been in for an additional 2 weeks. Doesn't that bring the total to 25 weeks? If this is true, ATYCLB is third on the list of longest chart durations of any U2 albums.

Well, well, well -
You just can't keep a good album down!!

Hits final numbers are in and it looks like U2's sales increased 24% to 55,198. They are at number 25, up from 27 last week!

At the beginning of the week, I too expected a slight decline. What I didn't expect was that there are MAJOR increases across the board. Almost all albums had a double digit percentage increase, so U2 is not an exception by any means.

I guess this could be attributed to the chart catching the very beginning of the holiday weekend, but it is still kinda odd.

You can see some of the bigger jumpers are Grammy nominees (India.Arie, O'Brother, U2, Alicia Keys) This is great news as U2 is now in really solid position for when the grammy sales really heat up!

My guess is that U2 will hang steady around 25 to 28 on the Billboard chart.

Great news all round -all the publicity has certainly helped. I suspect that ATYCLB will stay at around 25 this week in Billboard (a result in itself !!!!) -- and(in two weeks charts) haver a major climb to the top 5.

BTW - global sales - I am notsur when Internet dsales kick in, suspect later Doctor Who & Sting - so, total sales in the USA (and elsewhete ?) I auspect are understatesd)

WOW...I am amazed...I'm sure there is a logical explanation for this rather large increase for almost every title in the top 50, but still, to see it still is a little shocking...I must apologize to cm because even though the logic made sense and we all have learned that particular logic with hits usually ends up disappointing us, but 55,000 isnt too far from 60,000...I know it is probably still higher than Billboard, but thats a much bigger increase than I expected from U2...

What you smokin(pass it my way)??
There's no way ATYCLB will jump to over 60,000? Given there was no hype for U2 last week, The Super Bowl is done. Next is Grammys but sales won't be affected until the week of March 12th or 19th. Given U2 wins a couple of awards.
I predict sales will be around 38,000-39,000.
and chart btwn #27-#32 on Billboard.

Hello,

Soundscan numbers are just in. In their 68th week U2 drop one position to #26. However, their sales increase to 53128, up from 46441 last week. Total sales are now 3,485,056.

C ya!

Hello,

From this week on I'm working on a different project for my company. I think I won't have much time to give many comments on the charts. Still, here are the results of the Dutch jury (Numbers courtesy of Mega Top 100, http://web.planet.nl/music/charts/megatop100/ ).
ATYCLB rises 6 spots to #52 in its 67th chart week.
The total run of ATYCLB so far is:
1-1-1-1-1-3-3-3-6-7
6-5-7-6-6-6-5-6-1-2
8-12-16-25-30-36-38-40-45-48
49-43-39-39-45-42-36-27-15-7
6-6-14-25-29-39-37-43-55-47
38-65-60-66-69-80-81-65-57-61
44-41-44-41-56-58-52
(all information prior to week 40 with many thanks to Flying Padre Jr.)

The Best Of 1980-1990 also rises, but only 1 spot to #73 in their 113th week on the chart. The album is slowly sliding down, but I don't fear that it will go away. The album has re-entered the chart numerous times (at least 3) so I think it is safe to say that it will continue to sell respectable numbers.
The Best Of 1980-1990's (4th?) chart run is:
86-46-37-45-62-57-61-56-63-45
47-64-63-65-74

The #1 album in the Netherlands is the CD with the (classical) music as played during the royal marriage on 2-2-2. It's apparently selling in huge numbers, as the difference with #2 is more than 75%.

The #1 single is Shakira with Whenever Wherever. This is her debut here in the Netherlands (she never scored with her Spanish albums). Her album also rises to #2 this week.

C ya!

Marty

With this week's SoundScan data in, the first 68 weeks for ATYCLB on the U.S. Billboard charts are:

3-5-12-22-23-24-20(1xP)-18-22-16
19-19(2xP)-25-33-37-35-11-15-25-31
38-40-42-45-45-48-50-48-50-58
60-53-50-66-74-82-81-89-88-99
105-106-108-104-78-66-53-50-57-55
54-58(3xP)-62-67-80-77-78-76-69-71
74-58-39-56-61-66-25-26

"POP" was out of the Top 100 after 19 weeks and "Zooropa" was out of the Top 100 after 31 weeks. ATYCLB fell out of the Top 100 after 40 weeks, however, it has now returned for an additional 24 weeks. It has spent 64 out of 68 total weeks in the U.S. Top 100 and 25 weeks in the U.S. Top 40.

Approximate weekly sales for the first 68 weeks of ATYCLB are (rounded to nearest thousand):

428,000 + 176,000 + 119,000 + 125,000 + 100,000 + 113,000 + 154,000 + 259,000 + 108,000 + 66,000 + 59,000 + 57,000+ 47,000 + 44,000 + 41,000 + 49,000 + 85,000 + 74,000 + 54,000 + 48,000 + 43,000 + 39,000 + 37,000 + 39,000 + 30,000 + 29,000 + 26,000 + 29,000 + 25,000 + 24,000 + 27,000 + 30,000 + 31,000 + 24,000 + 22,000 + 18,000 + 19,000 + 17,000 + 17,000 + 15,000 + 14,000 + 14,000 + 13,000 + 13,000 + 16,000 + 19,000 + 21,000 + 23,000 + 22,000 + 22,000 + 24,000 + 25,000 + 24,000 + 23,000 + 21,000 + 28,000 + 28,000 + 30,000 + 46,000 + 72,000 + 42,000 + 28,000 + 26,000 + 19,000 + 20,000 + 19,000 + 46,000 + 53,000

Exact total U.S. SoundScan sales after 68 weeks are: 3,485,056 copies (note: due to the rounding involved in the weekly estimates, the total there is slightly higher than the actual SoundScan total).

With sales of nearly 3.5 million copies in the U.S. and a ranking of #26 after 68 weeks, any Grammy wins could indeed propel ATYCLB to 4x Platinum status and maybe, just maybe, a top 10 ranking for a week!

Well doctorwho, I think U2 could conceivable be in the top ten for at least two weeks.

I am thinking they will win at least 3 grammys, maybe as many as 5, with Album of the Year, Best Rock Album, and best Pop vocal performance among them. The Grammys will be held on a Wednesday which will mean a lot of people will go out and get the album right away that weekend (Thurs. Fri. Sat.) boosting them up hopefully into top ten or near. Then the BIG week of grammy sales boosting them for sure into the top 10, and then hopefully just that buzz will remain for a while, along with big post grammy press coverage, I think they could hang in there for yet another weekk of really big sales.

Of course everything stated above rests on the fact that U2 do in fact win a few major awards. They might get shafted, and we only see a small increase from their performance on the show. Who knows, we will see.

I know what you mean doctorwho, but I really think that if they win album awards it will make a bigger difference. U2 won three last year, but they were really overshadowed in the media by both Stealy Dan winning and Eminem NOT winning.

But you are right, having the album last this long and get all these nominations is really just a great capper to a unbelievable run.

Here is something I posted in the main forum that nobody really seemed interested in, but I think you guys here might find it kinda cool. It's about U2 and having some Grammy "firsts".

>
Has anyone ever won grammys in 3 different genres? - U2 could. They have won in the Rock Category with several awards, they have won for best Alternative album, and if Stuck wins this year they will win the in Pop field.

Has anyone ever had 4 songs nominated for grammys off of one album? I don't think so, in fact probably not even 3. U2 has.(BD, Stuck, Walk On, Elevation).

Has anyone ever had 11 grammy nomination for one album? I'm not sure, but I don't think so. U2 has. (3 last year, 8 this year)

Has a GROUP ever won Album of the year twice? Nope. U2 might this year.

Has anyone ever won Best Rock Album 3 times? U2 could this year (Joshua Tree, AB, ATYCLB)

Has any GROUP won more than 10 grammys? Not that I know of, and that number will only go up for U2 this year.

Those are some that I have thought of. Anyone else??

When U2 won the 3 Grammys last year, ATYCLB only bounced to #11 - and it was #35 the week before. In other words, the album was about the same rank (oddly enough) as it is now - U2 won 3 awards, with 2 of them being major awards - and the album still didn't squeak back into the Top 10. Hence why I'm not sure it would do so now. I'd love it if it did, but considering the album will be running into its 70th week on the charts by Grammy time, I think it would be a push to get it all the way into the Top 10.

Also even if U2 were "shafted" - we have to remember that this album is already a Triple Grammy winner. That's more than any of U2's other albums! If it actually pulls in another Grammy - even a "minor" one - that's just "icing." And if the album wins "Album of the Year" then that'll really make ATYCLB special - the only U2 album to have won song/record of the year and album of the year (albeit, in different years). So while I sure want U2 to win, if they are shafted, I won't be that disappointed thanks to the 3 Grammy wins last year.

I replied to your above post, womanfish in the other forum, but in case you miss it, I thought I'd post this again here.

Michael Jackson is the only winner to prevail in the vocal performance categories for pop, rock and r&b, which he did in 1983 during his "Thriller" sweep. So yes, someone has won in 3 different categories before.

Quote:

I'm still checking on this one. However, I was thinking this myself - 4 songs nominated from one album...wow! Even moreso, every single that U2 released was nominated for a Grammy! Maybe the songs weren't huge U.S. hits, but all four made the Top 5 in the the U.K. and Top 10 in Australia and Ireland! Even JT and AB singles didn't have that success. Clearly, U2 chose their singles well this time.

Quote:

Michael Jackson had 12 nominations for "Thriller" in '83 and one more nomination for a "Thriller-related" project in '84.

Quote:

You are right here - no GROUP has ever won the Album of the Year award twice. Several solo artists have.

Quote:

Michael Jackson won 8 Grammy Awards for "Thriller" alone and 13 overall (of course, he's not a GROUP). And people like Paul Simon and Quincy Jones have won far more, but they too aren't GROUPS.

The Beatles won 11 awards when they were together. They also won 6 more Grammys later, three of which were "Hall of Fame" type of awards (the other three were for "Free as a Bird" in 1996). Plus, there were numerous other Grammy awards for various member of the Beatles (but technically, these don't count).

ATYCLB climbs 1 place to Number 19 this week in Canada. In a report on youtwo.net, it reports that U2 sold 1 million albums in the UK last year - I would estimate that around 500,ooo copies of ATYCLB, with the remainder back catalogue sales, esp Best Of.

Actually, JT won BEST ALBUM, BEST ROCK PERFORMANCE WITH VOCAL at the 1988 grammys, and BEST MUSIC VIDEO (Short) for STREETS at the 1989 Grammys.
WOMANFISH said that it also won BEST ROCK ALBUM, but I don't believe this category even existed in 1992 when AB was up for 3 awards much less 1988.

I'm NOT CERTAIN of this, but according to my World Book Encyclopaedia, this is the case as it shows all Grammy awards for each year up to 1994. Besides, I think it's been said that U2 only has 10 grammy awards so far:

JT- 3
RnH- 1
AB- 1
Zooropa- 1
ZOOTV video- 1
ATYCLB- 3 (so far)

They have to this date i believe 22 grammy nominations. Ofcourse, if someone can clear this up....feel free to do so!
Bless ya!

PS: Gotta love those US charts!
