Week 50 and 51 Chart News...

Week 51 chart news for Ireland, Australia and the U.K. is now available and has been included in this update. Week 50 chart news for the U.S., The Netherlands, and Canada is presented. The Global Charts have only been updated through Week 45.

I am having difficulty in posting this entire message (Elvis is looking into this problem) so I will break up this post into seven parts (one part for each country discussed).

In Australia, ATYCLB returned to the Top 50 in its 50th week after release at a rather impressive #33. This week, it holds onto that impressive position, dropping slightly to #35. Here is its run so far (each line is 10 weeks):

1-1-2-3-3-3-3(TP)-3-3-6
9-12-15-13-14-14-9-8-7-8(4P)
6-6-6-5-9-12-16-18-24-25
29-27-29-30-27-28-27-33-29-38
36-39-43-47-46-48-out-out-out-33
35

("Out" represents a week the album was out of the Australian Top 50 albums chart.)

The album is 4x Platinum (280,000 copies sold). Hopefully, a new single ("Walk On") will be released soon to further revitalize the album.

This gives ATYCLB a total of 48 weeks in the Australian Top 50.
smile.gif
For comparison, R.E.M.'s album, "Reveal," spent 11 weeks in the Australian Top 50 debuting at #6 and peaking at #5 in its 4th week on the charts. It is certified as Gold (35,000 copies sold). Radioheads "Amnesiac" spent eight weeks in the Top 50. The "Tomb Raider" soundtrack spent 7 weeks in the Top 50, peaking at #10.

"Fever" by Kylie Minogue is the #1 album in Australia. I have not observed N'Sync's "Celebrity" anywhere in the Australian Top 50.
biggrin.gif

"Elevation" peaked (debuted) at #6 and spent 6 weeks in the Australian Top 50 singles chart. "Beautiful Day" debuted at #1 and "Stuck in a Moment..." debuted at #3. U2 have now enjoyed three Top 10 hits in Australia from ATYCLB.

"Because I Got High" by Afroman is the #1 song in Australia. Although no U2 song appears on the singles chart, "Walk On" may be receiving some radio air play, which may have caused the album to return to the Top 50.

In an interesting side note, Michael Jackson's, "You Rock My World," debuted at #4 on the Australian charts last week. It drops to #20 this week. Although the song has reached the Top 10 on all the charts I monitor, this isn't quite the auspicious performance one would expect from Jackson's "highly anticipated" album.

In Ireland, in Week 51, ATYCLB slips slightly from #22 to #24. Here is ATYCLB's run to date:

1-2-3-3-4-6-x-x-7-6
4-3-3-1-3-2-2-2-2-2
4-3-7-10-7-9-15-11-20-22
23-22-23-24-25-22-18-12-10-10*
13-6-5-1-1-2-5-5-11-22
24

(The "x" represents a week where data was not obtained due to the 2000/2001 holiday season. I am making the assumption that ATYCLB remained in the Irish Top 10 for both of those weeks. The "*" indicates a week where there was some confusion on the charts - early reports indicated the album had jumped up to #3, but the chart I monitor showed no movement for this week.)

Despite the slight drop, U2's ATYCLB has not fallen out of the Irish Top 25 since its debut and has spent 35 out of its 51 weeks in the Irish Top 10. Hopefully, ATYCLB can remain in the Top 30 for one more week, giving it a full year in the Irish Top 30.
smile.gif

In Week 44, an unprecedented twelve U2 albums made Ireland's Top 60! All That You Can't Leave Behind" was at #1; "The Joshua Tree" at #5; "The Best Of (1980-90)" at #10; "Achtung Baby" at #11; "Rattle & Hum" at #17; "The Unforgettable Fire" at #33; "Zooropa" at #35; "Pop" at #37; "War" at #40; "Under A Blood Red Sky" at #43; "Boy" at #45 and "October" at #60.

As stated above, ATYCLB has spent 50 consecutive weeks in the Irish Top 25. For comparison, Radiohead's "Amnesiac" spent only four weeks in the Irish Top 30.

"Gold - The Greatest Hits" by Steps is the #1 album in Ireland. I have not observed N'Sync's "Celebrity" anywhere in the Irish Top 30.
biggrin.gif

"Elevation," "Beautiful Day" and "Stuck in a Moment..." all debuted at #1 on the Irish singles charts, giving U2 three consecutive #1 singles from ATYCLB. At present, there are no U2 singles in the Irish Top 30.

"Because I Got High" by Afroman is the #1 song in Ireland this week. The Corrs and Cranberries have new singles debuting in the Irish Top 30 this week, at #26 and #28, respectively. Michael Jackon's, "You Rock My World," drops from #4 to #7 in its second week.

In the U.K., ATYCLB jumps back into the Top 75 in its 51st week.
smile.gif
It rises from #76 to #74. Here is its chart progress to date:

1-4-10-20-25-26-28(DP)-29-29-23
17-12-12-7-7-8-10-3-6-8
12-14-23-30-39-41-49-54-65-60
53-47-47-58-65-56(TP)-47-37-30-23
22-15-16-23-34-42-53-66-83-76
74

The album has been certified as Triple Platinum (900,000 copies sold) in the U.K. Clearly, the effects of the tour have worn, as the album has been out of the Top 70 for the past three weeks. Hopefully a new single ("Walk On") will rejuvenate the album in the U.K., as well as in Ireland and Australia.

ATYCLB has spent 51 weeks in the U.K. Top 100. For comparison, N'Sync's "Celebrity" had the following run on the U.K. charts: #12-26-43-66-Out of the Top 100.
biggrin.gif

"Gold - The Greatest Hits" by Steps is the #1 album in the U.K. P.J. Harvey's album "Stories from the City..." drops slightly from #56 to #57 this week on the U.K. charts.
smile.gif
"The Joshua Tree" was #88 last week. This week, it rises to #84. Even though it has been two months since U2 performed in the U.K., U2 still have two albums in the Top 100 there.

"Elevation" debuted at #3, "Beautiful Day" debuted at #1 and "Stuck in a Moment..." debuted at #2 on the U.K. singles chart. This gives U2 three Top 3 hits off of AYTCLB in the U.K., which is more successful than many of U2's albums, including "The Joshua Tree" and "POP." Hopefully, "Walk On" will give U2 yet another Top 5 hit in the U.K.

Musique Vs U2's "New Years Dub" spent 9 weeks on the U.K. Top 100 singles charts, peaking at #15. R.E.M.'s "Imitation of Life" spent 13 weeks on the U.K. singles charts, peaking at #6.

"Because I Got High" by Afroman is the #1 song in the U.K. this week. Afroman has the #1 song in Ireland, Australia and the U.K. P.J. Harvey's new song, "This Is Love," debuted at #41 last week on the U.K. singles chart. It drops all the way to #94 this week.
frown.gif
Michael Jackson's, "You Rock My World" drops from #2 to #6 in its second week on the U.K. charts.

Thanks to the DVD release, "Rattle & Hum" leapt from #172 to #1 on the U.K. video charts in late August/early September. This week the movie remains at #12 on the U.K. video charts. For a movie that was released in 1988, it is quite impressive to see this solid run.

In the U.S., ATYCLB fell from the Top 100 in its 41st week. Typically, I would stop monitoring the charts at this time. However, with the new single, various U2 promotions and return of the tour, I believed that ATYCLB would return to the Top 100. This premonition proved to be true. ATYCLB returned to the U.S. Top 100 in Week 45 and has not dropped out since.

Melissa sent me the SoundScan data for this week, so I can report some actual U.S. sales numbers.

In Week 50, ATYCLB rises slightly from #57 to #55 in the U.S.
smile.gif

Position #55 in mid-October is a great spot for this album. "Stuck...." remains in the Top 60 on the U.S. Hot 100 chart (see below) and with the tour now on-going, this should keep the album relatively stagnant on the charts for the next month or so. That may be just enough time for holiday sales to pick up, which may give the album another boost.

The first 50 weeks for ATYCLB on the U.S. Billboard charts are:

3-5-12-22-23-24-20-18-22-16
19-19-25-33-37-35-11-15-25-31
38-40-42-45-45-48-50-48-50-58
60-53-50-66-74-82-81-89-88-99
105-106-108-104-78-66-53-50-57-55

"POP" was out of the Top 100 after 19 weeks and "Zooropa" was out of the Top 100 after 31 weeks. ATYCLB fell out of the Top 100 after 40 weeks, however, it has now returned for an additional 6 weeks. It has spent 46 out of 50 total weeks in the U.S. Top 100.

Approximate weekly sales for the first 50 weeks of ATYCLB are (rounded to nearest thousand):

428,000 + 176,000 + 119,000 + 125,000 + 100,000 + 113,000 + 154,000 + 259,000 + 108,000 + 66,000 + 59,000 + 57,000+ 47,000 + 44,000 + 41,000 + 49,000 + 85,000 + 74,000 + 54,000 + 48,000 + 43,000 + 39,000 + 37,000 + 39,000 + 30,000 + 29,000 + 26,000 + 29,000 + 25,000 + 24,000 + 27,000 + 30,000 + 31,000 + 24,000 + 22,000 + 18,000 + 19,000 + 17,000 + 17,000 + 15,000 + 14,000 + 14,000 + 13,000 + 13,000 + 16,000 + 19,000 + 21,000 + 23,000 + 22,000 + 22,000

Estimated total U.S. sales after 50 weeks are: 2,924,000.

In Week 45, when ATYCLB charted at #78, sales would typically be around 18-19,000 copies. However, Billboard claimed only a 19% increase in sales for ATYCLB. The SoundScan data from the week before (kindly sent to me by Melissa) showed sales of a little over 13,000 copies. This meant that with a 19% increase, sales could be no more than 16,000 copies for the week, which seems low (remember, this occurred before the tragedy). Nonetheless, I will use this sales estimate in my calculations.

In Week 46, at #66, sales would typically be around 22,000 copies. I took off 15% from that number due to the tragedy and estimated sales at 19,000 copies. Since ATYCLB was also listed as a "Pacesetter," I felt this estimate was solid.

In Week 47, the album jumped up to #53. Popmartijn saw an article that reported sales for the #50 album that week at 22,000 copies. Therefore, I estimated sales for this week to be 21,000 copies.

In Week 48, the album was at #50, so I estimated sales at 23,000 copies. This may seem high, but Week 49 chart data (see below) suggests that 22,000 copies may be too low.

In Week 49, the album dropped to #57, but I felt that this might not necessarily be due to a huge drop in sales. My guess here proved to be true. Melissa sent me SoundScan data that showed sales to be at exactly 21,578 copies (which rounds to 22,000 copies).

In week 50, the album gains slightly in sales, with 21,955 copies sold (which, again, rounds to 22,000 copies).

This puts sales at 2.92 million copies in the U.S. This may be off by a few thousand, but I feel it is fairly accurate. Please note that while many weeks were estimates of sales based on chart positions, many other weeks Melissa sent me actual SoundScan data, which provided us with the exact number of copies sold.

If one estimates that stores have approximately 5x weekly sales in stock, that would put the shipment figures at over 3 million copies. Therefore, while it's not official, ATYCLB, for all intents and purposes, has gone 3x Platinum in the U.S.
smile.gif
The "official" certification should come within the next month.

The #1 album in the U.S. this week is by Ja Rule ("Pain Is Love") with slightly over 220,000 copies sold. Enya sees a substantial increase in sales as her album goes to #2 with 162,000 copies sold (an increase from 129,000 copies sold last week). N'Sync's "Celebrity" rises to #16 on the charts (from #17) but decreases in sales.
biggrin.gif
"Celebrity" sells 61,000 copies this week, down from 63,000 copies last week.

Whitney Houston's version of the "Star Spangled Banner" is selling incredibly well. It zoomed up on the Billboard Hot 100 charts last week thanks to sales of almost 60,000 copies (easily making it the #1 selling CD single in the U.S.). This week, the single sells nearly 78,000 copies, which keeps it at #1 on the U.S. CD singles sales chart. The #2 CD single on the sales chart, "AM to PM," sold a bit under 25,000 copies. Lately, CD singles do not sell that well in the U.S. or Canada, which may be the reason for U2 not releasing CD singles in the U.S. For example, the #10 CD single on the sales chart, "Don't Mess with the Radio," sold approximately 3,500 copies. The #100 CD single, "Separated" by Avant, sold a mere 611 copies.

"The Best Of" drops slightly from #14 to #15 on the U.S. Pop Catalog charts this week. It had peaked at #5 on this chart in early September. That #5 ranking was the highest this album has charted on this (or any) chart (note that the DOUBLE CD version of the "Best Of" charted at #2 on the Billboard Top 200, but not the single CD version). At #15, this puts sales at around 6,000 copies for the week. I'm not sure what caused this surge of sales (when the album was at #5) for the "Best Of," as there was no tour at the time, no new single and the tragedy had yet to happen. Nonetheless, it was nice to see people getting into "old" U2 music.
wink.gif

"Stuck in a Moment..." debuted at #62 (higher than the debut for "Beautiful Day") on the Hot 100 chart. This gave U2 their second biggest hit off of ATYCLB in the U.S. This week, the song remains at #52. Its run to date has been: #62-58-55-52-52.

"Stuck..." was climbing slowly on the charts and now it is stagnant. On the very important Adult Top 40 charts, the song also remains stagnant at #13 (possibly explaining why the song did not improve on the Hot 100 chart); however, on this chart the song retains its Gold background indicating increased airplay. If the song can climb higher on the Adult Top 40 chart, that will give it a significant boost in reaching the U.S. Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (the chart to use when monitoring a song's success in the U.S.).

"Stuck..." has not entered the Top 20 on the U.S. Modern Rock charts. All of U2's other singles ("Beautiful Day," "Walk On" and "Elevation") became Top 10 hits on this chart. The slow rise of "Stuck..." on the U.S. charts suggests that Brian Eno will NOT win his bet (claiming this would become U2's biggest hit ever). In contrast, Creed's "My Sacrifice," debuts at #20 on the U.S. Modern Rock chart and at #50 in the U.S. Hot 100 chart. I guess if U2 were still in their 20's or early 30's, they'd have this type of success as well.

The #1 song in the U.S. this week is "I'm Real" by Jennifer Lopez. Lopez's album had fallen out of the U.S. Top 100, but thanks to this #1 song, it's been floating in the Top 20 for the last few months. As stated above, patriotism abounds as "The Star Spangled Banner" by Whitney Houston jumps from #13 to #6 this week (the song is #1 on the U.S. CD singles sales chart, but #6 on the Hot 100 chart). Michael Jackson's, "You Rock My World," peaked at #10 on the U.S. Hot 100 chart. This week it drops from #22 to #29. "What's Going On" - the Allstar tribute - drops from #30 to #33 this week. However, it seems that this ranking is based solely on airplay. As you all know, a CD single will be released so that proceeds can go to charity. Once the CD single is out, I predict this song to chart a bit higher.

In Canada, ATYCLB improves to #20 (from #23) in Week 50. Here is the run for ATYCLB so far:

1-1-5-8-11-11-12-8-16-17
14-17-20-25-29-30-12-18-22-24
23-25-22(TP)-18-17-21-26(4P)-27-30-24
13-19-17-21-26-27-31-33-38-43
48-53-47-54-47-39-37-28-23-20

ATYLCB is certified as 4x Platinum in Canada (400,000 copies sold). The album has spent 44 out of 50 weeks in the Canadian Top 40. The rise of ATYCLB on the Canadian charts is clearly due to the success of "Stuck...." (see below). I think people in Canada and the U.S. should give themselves a pat on the back for keeping ATYCLB on the charts at the same moment it started to fall around the rest of the world.
smile.gif

The #1 album in Canada is "Now 6!" by Various Artists. In its 12th week on the Canadian charts, N'Sync's "Celebrity" rises slightly from #28 to #25, but remains below U2's album.
biggrin.gif

As shown above, ATYCLB has enjoyed 50 weeks in the Canadian Top 55. By comparison, The "Tomb Raider" soundtrack spent 10 weeks in the Canadian Top 100 album charts, peaking at #9. It sold approximately 7,500-6,500 copies for the first five weeks of its release. R.E.M.'s "Reveal" spent 10 weeks in the Canadian Top 100, debuting at #4.

"Elevation" had spent five weeks at #1 on the Canadian CD singles sales chart. "Elevation-Part 2" was #1 for four weeks while "Elevation-Part 1" was #1 for one week. This week, "Elevation-Part 2" rises from #5 to #3 while "Elevation-Part 1" rises from #7 to #5. In general, CD singles in Canada sell 10% of the corresponding album position. For example, at position #10, an album in Canada generally sells around 7,000 copies. Therefore, a CD single at #10 sells 700 copies. Neither version of "Elevation" has dropped out of the Canadian Top 7 in the past few months. Therefore, I would estimate that both versions have sold at least 1,000 copies per week for the last 13 weeks. While CD singles' sales may be low, this is clearly an impressive run by "Elevation."

"There You'll Be" by Faith Hill is the #1 song on the Canadian CD singles sales chart. Musique Vs U2's "New Year's Dub" rises to #28 (from #41) on this chart. U2 has six other songs in the Top 80 on the Canadian CD singles chart, ranging from "One" to "Walk On."

"Elevation" is the third #1 single U2 has had on Canada's CD singles sales chart from ATYCLB. "Walk On" and "Beautiful Day" also reached #1 on this chart. Three #1 singles on Canada's CD singles sales chart from ATYCLB surpasses the success U2 had with "POP" in Canada. The combined sales from both CD singles allowed "Walk On" to spend 6 weeks at #1. Musique Vs U2's "New Years Dub" peaked at #10.

The CD singles market in Canada is weak though and much more emphasis should be placed on Canada's airplay charts, The Hits. "Stuck...." is doing brilliantly on this chart - outperforming even "Beautiful Day!" "Stuck..." rises to #4 this week on The Hits, giving U2 their biggest hit on this chart since 1998. "Stuck..." has had the following run on the Canadian Hits Charts (airplay): #72-47-33-16-9-6-5-4.

"Beautiful Day" went to #10 on The Hits last November while "Walk On" peaked at #35 last April. "Elevation" stopped at #15 this past summer. Looking back, "Discotheque" went to #6 and "Staring At The Sun" went to #5 in 1997. "The Sweetest Thing" peaked at #4 in 1998. Therefore, if "Stuck..." can work its way up to #3, it will become U2's biggest hit on The Hits since 1997. "Fallin'" by Alicia Keys is the #1 song on the Canadian airplay charts. Michael Jackson's, "You Rock My World," was #10 last week on The Hits, but drops to #18 this week. Again, while this Jackson song has done well, for a first single from a "big" album, it's not making quite that big of an impact around the world as one might have expected.

As discussed above, all of U2's CD singles from ATYCLB have hit #1 on the Canadian CD singles charts. Therefore, once (and if) "Stuck..." is released in Canada as a CD single, I am sure it will jump to the top of the charts. This just makes Brian Eno that much closer to winning his bet - all Eno needs now is for the song to become a huge hit in the U.S.

In the Netherlands (this is a recapitulation of the information kindly provided by Popmartijn and Flying Padre Jr.), ATYCLB rises to #47 from #55 in Week 50. The run so far is:

1-1-1-1-1-3-3-3-6-7
6-5-7-6-6-6-5-6-1-2
8-12-16-25-30-36-38-40-45-48
49-43-39-39-45-42-36-27-15-7
6-6-14-25-29-39-37-43-55-47

Popmartijn provides a very thorough discussion of the Dutch charts, therefore, I recommend reading his comments here for more information. Below is a summary of some of that information.

"V" by Live is the #1 album in the Netherlands for the fourth consecutive week. U2's "Best Of" finally drops out of the Dutch Top 100 (it had been at #100 for the last two weeks). It has spent 97 total weeks in the Top 100 on the Dutch charts.

U2's "Elevation" is now falling quickly off the Dutch charts as it drops from #43 to #53 this week. "Elevation's" run on the charts is: #11-7-13-17-1-2-3-11-17-17-23-31-36-43-53.

"Can't Get You Out Of My Head" by Kylie Minogue is the #1 song in the Netherlands. Michael Jackson's, "You Rock My World," debuts at #4 this week.

On the Global Charts, ATYCLB returned to the Top 30 in Week 40. The charts have not been updated since Week 45. Here is its run so far (each line is 10 weeks):

1-1-1-2-3-3-4-5-7-7
7-8-10-9-9-7-6-5-7-7
12-15-out-out-out-out-out-out-out-out
out-out-out-out-out-out-out-out-out-25
13-15-13-11-21-??-??-??-??-??

("Out" means out of the Top 30 on this chart. "??" indicates a week where the chart was not updated so no information is available.)

The album resurfaced in the Top 30 thanks to U2's tour in Europe. ATYCLB has spent 28 weeks in the Global Top 30. Given the global positions at Week 46, I feel it is safe to assume that the album dropped out of the Top 30 on the Global charts in Week 46 and has not charted there since.

The U.S., Dutch and Canadian charts will be updated later this week.

thanks doctorwho!! Great info as usual. Things are looking pretty bleak for the upcoming week. From my usual indicators of Amazon.com and cdnow.com, it is looking like U2 might be in for a big fall this coming thursday. I predict a drop of at least 10 spots. Sad, I know, and hopefully I will be wrong, but they have dropped pretty dramatically on both of those charts last week.

Then they pulled the no-show for the NYC thing which could have boosted sales for next week at least. Hopefully the david letterman appearence can help them a little.

Publicity-wise I am almost glad they weren't at the NYC concert. I mean it was pretty much a concert of has-beens. the only "hot" group there was Destiny's Child, and they aren't even that hot anymore. So not being there next to Bon Jovi, Elton, Billy, the Who, etc... may not have been such a bad thing. U2 is walking a thin line right now between being hip and innovative and being aging nostalgia rockers. Hopefully they will stick with being innovative and fresh.

This is Week 51 in the U.S. Even "Achtung Baby" charted at #44 in Week 51 and AB was obviously a much bigger hit in the U.S. (rock music was VERY popular then and U2 were, of course, younger - therefore, more "hip" and "cool").

When we compare ATYCLB to all the other albums that were released around the same time, we see ATYCLB holding strong while many releases from "hot" artists have fallen. Where's Ricky Martin's album? What happened to Madonna's "Music?" Where's the Backstreet Boys' album? How about Jay-Z's prior release? Outkast? As of this writing, ATYCLB is even above Limp Bizkit's and Janet's latest albums - and Janet's album has been out only half as long. In other words, even if ATYCLB now begins its final descent off the charts, it performed admirably.

Additionally, even if the album drops on the charts, it might not drop as much in sales. Right now, Hits Daily Double has ATYCLB at #47. We all know Hits is off with their numbers, but the fact that ATYCLB is still in their Top 50 (as of this moment) means that the album is still selling well. It's not like ATYCLB will suddenly see its sales cut in half. Plus, thanks to the holiday season, we are slowly entering the time of year where album sales start to boom. So even if ATYCLB is floating around #80-90 on the charts come December, it may still have far stronger sales than normal for that position.

With the tour now going and "Stuck..." still being played on the radio, I just don't see this album suffering any major drops (i.e., 25 spots or more) for a few more weeks.

As for U2's appearance on the charity special, while I agree that any public presentation is a good opportunity for promotion, I don't think not performing here will hurt much. Unlike the charity effort a few weeks ago that was broadcast on all major stations, this charity event was only seen on VH-1. Of course, U2 didn't just decline the concert - they had to cancel. Therefore, we can't "scold" them for "missing" this opportunity. Furthermore, I don't think U2 look at any of these charity events as an "opportunity" for more album sales. This might not be true of other artists, but it would seem out of character for U2.

Bottom line: The album did well, especially given the poor showing of "POP" and the current state of radio. I remember an interview from nearly a year ago when a reporter asked Edge about touring. The reporter brought up the fact that the album might be off the charts by the time the tour starts. Not only did that prove to be false, but a year later, the album is still nicely in the Top 60. Can't ask for much more than that!

No arguing here. The album has done awesome!!! The only thing I could ask is that it would go 4 times platinum. I mean for being on the chart for a full year, you'd think it could make it. Oh well, I'm sure it will hit that mark at some point.

I would just love to see it hang around for a while longer. Who knows, if hits still has it at number 50, then I may indeed be wrong, but hits was also WAY off last week.

U2 has pretty much killed all other compitition in regards to longevity, and even in terms of sales, especially if we look worldwide. Maybe Shaggy and The Beatles are the only ones to beat them sales-wise worldwide???

I know they have done great, but I can't say I'm looking forward to the upcoming decline. I will miss the fun of following the weekly charts and of course reading the other great chart info from you and Sting, Popmartjian and others.

Yeah, I know what you mean. It was lots of fun following the charts and I will miss that as well. However, we will be busy for the next couple of months, a new single is coming in Europe so there will still be something to talk about. And hopefully even one more single later. After that, I don't really know, but after monitoring the charts every week for a whole year I think I will stick to it even without U2 in the charts. I kinda learnt a lot about music by following the charts regularly and I will probably continue this!

i totally agree. i too have learnt alot, and i find it very interesting. though no u2 to monitor will not be as exciting, it will still be interesting to watch other groups on the charts. besides, its been a year, we cant complain - how many other acts stay on the charts this long - when in their 40's??

its all good.

Hello,

I just checked the Billboard 200 and ATYCLB has risen 1 spot to #54. As it also has a gold background its sales have also increased. However, I don't think sales have increased very much as it was apparently a slow week for sales (the #1 album 'only' sold 181,000 copies). The #41 album (New Order's Get Ready) has sold about 28,700 copies and that is the closest figure I have to ATYCLB.
Anyway, I expect Doctorwho to have a more detailed report later this week.

Hello,

Here is some more useless chart trivia by someone why has currently too much time on his hands. Doctorwho, don't worry, I'll not report anything you are used to do. Just some things I found striking.

So ATYCLB rises one spot to #54 with increasing sales. It is also the only album with increasing sales between #45 (The Sickness by Disturbed) and #64 (The Spirit Room by Michelle Branch). This is disregarding the #47 and #63 debuts.
Even more striking, ATYCLB is the only album between #27 (Come Clean by Puddle Of Mud) and #65 (Tenacious D by Tenacious D) that has risen on the charts. Again, this disregards the 6 debuts on that part of the charts.

Now I'm no chart predictor, but seeing these numbers I think U2 do not have to worry that much about their chart performance the coming weeks. Womanfish, what is your prediction? As bleak as you thought at the beginning of this week?

(OK, I mean that in a positive way. When you say thinks aren't looking good we can expect a positive performance...)

That's it! I'm going to get a life now.

Hello,

While some of you here are talking about whether or not stopping to monitor the charts as ATYCLB is leaving the charts, I have no choice but to go on!
tongue.gif
In the Dutch charts, ATYCLB continues to perform very well. It took me a while to get the numbers as my usual source hasn't updated the album chart yet, but thankfully I found another source. So for this week the album numbers are courtesy of the Mega Top 100 (http://www.wanadoo.nl/top40/charts/index_21.html).
Well, my extra efforts in finding an updated album chart were immediately rewarded. In its 51st week ATYCLB rises another 9 spots. It's in the top 40 again, at #38 to be precise! So was right at least once when I said that ATYCLB would stabilise on the charts. (However, looking at what I wrote last week I was wrong in thinking ATYCLB would not rise much further as I think 9 spots is quite impressive.)
The total run of ATYCLB so far is:
1-1-1-1-1-3-3-3-6-7
6-5-7-6-6-6-5-6-1-2
8-12-16-25-30-36-38-40-45-48
49-43-39-39-45-42-36-27-15-7
6-6-14-25-29-39-37-43-55-47
38
(all information prior to week 40 with many thanks to Flying Padre Jr.)

There are no other U2 albums in the charts.
frown.gif

There is a new #1 album as Live drops to #2 after 4 weeks at the top. The new #1 is Cieli Di Toscana by Andrea Bocelli (with a little U2 involvement as Bono contributes vocals to one track, I believe). He is also at the singles chart, at #77 with Melodrama.

That chart position by Andrea Bocelli is lower than the chart position of Elevation. In its 16th week, the song only drops 2 spots to #55.
Elevation's run on the charts is:
11-7-13-17-1-2-3-11-17-17
23-31-36-43-53-16

The #1 song in the Netherlands remains Kylie Minogue with her catchy song Can't Get You Out Of My Head. She holds off Michael Jackson as his song You Rock My World rises to #2. The worst news is that Britney's I'm A Slave For You enters the charts at #12 (do people actually BUY this crap?). BTW, Kylie's album Fever drops to #10 on the albums chart.

C ya!

Marty, are you as suprised by ATYCLB's good run in the dutch charts as I am?
I almost started to fear that there was no place for good music in the dutch charts anymore (though the album chart always has been better to digest than the singles chart)

Partly yes, partly no.

Yes, I'm a bit surprised ATYCLB performs so well one year after its release. But then again, U2 has always been very popular here in the Netherlands and the Dutch chart often has albums charting on it for more than a year. I mean, Moby's Play is above ATYCLB and that album is out even longer. Until a few weeks ago the Buena Vista Social Club album was still in the charts (I think it charted 208 weeks and it was released in 1997, so I think it was in the charts for 4 years straight!). No, I think there is often good music on the charts. And because I think this I can stand a 'group' like K3, which is making kiddies music, to be #1 for a few weeks (hey, if the parents want to buy that for their children let them buy it) as Live and Bob Dylan, etc. also chart high.

Does anyone know where "Stuck" is on the U.S. charts for week 51? I know it's at #14 on the Adult top 40 (down from 13). The song still has a golden background which indicates increased airplay.
But where is it on the billboard 100? It's odd that the song hasn't cracked the top 50. I hear it all the time on the radio.
It's such a top 40 song, and it seemed like it would at leaset crack the top40.
"Superman" by "5 for fighting" has done well on the charts. And that song has a similar feel as STuck.

This time around, the single was actually officially released. It has a decent video that has done well. And it's VERY radio friendly. I cant figure out why it hasn't made the top 50!
Does anyone have any ideas?

Since ATYCLB only increased by one on the USA chart this week, I would predict sales to be about the same as last week, around 22,000 copies which puts ATYCLB's total in the USA at 2,946,000 copies sold to date!

Hey Florence76! Thanks for all the Italian chart info! As you know Italy is one the largest markets for music in the world and U2s sales there are big, thanks for all the chart info. I often look at the Italian charts and post the info each week here. I wish the chart was bigger than just 50 positions. Anyways, thanks again for the complete list for the entire year!

I'll do an update for Week 52 and 51 chart news later.

For now...

"Stuck..." dropped to #59 in the U.S. It dropped to #14 on the Adult Top 40 charts too. However, on the Adult Top 40 chart, the song retained its Gold background indicating increased airplay. Therefore, while the song is still getting played, it's clearly not receiving the level of airplay that numerous other songs are - hence the drops.

As for sales, ATYCLB had a Gold background as well - indicating a substantial increase in sales. Therefore, to estimate the sales to be the same this week as they were last week is erroneous. Usually, Billboard only puts on a Gold background for albums with a 10% or more increase in sales. Therefore, I estimate the album sold 24,000 copies this week, putting total sales just shy of 2.95 million copies in the U.S. The 3x Platinum certification should come soon.

"Stuck..." drops one spot in Canada, but again, probably because it was pushed down due to other songs more than because it received less airplay (in this case, "Hero"). However, unless "Stuck..." surges in the next week or so, it appears that it peaked at #4. The album also rises a bit in Canada. Hopefully, this will cause the album to receive a 5x Platinum certification soon.

Lastly, in Ireland, ATYCLB finally drops out of the Top 25 in its 52nd week on the charts.
frown.gif
However, it remained in the Top 30 - therefore, it survived a full year in the Irish Top 30!
