Week 45-47 Chart News...

I haven't provided a detailed chart post like this for a few weeks, so I apologize for the length of this post. Week 47 chart news for Ireland, Australia and the U.K. is now available and has been included in this update. Week 46 chart news for the U.S., The Netherlands, and Canada is presented. The Global Charts have only been updated through Week 45.

In Australia, ATYCLB drops from #48 to Out of the Top 50 in its 47th week on the charts. Here is its run so far (each line is 10 weeks):

1-1-2-3-3-3-3(TP)-3-3-6
9-12-15-13-14-14-9-8-7-8(4P)
6-6-6-5-9-12-16-18-24-25
29-27-29-30-27-28-27-33-29-38
36-39-43-47-46-48-out

The album is 4x Platinum (280,000 copies sold). Hopefully, a new single ("Walk On"?) will be released soon to help revitalize the album.

R.E.M.'s album, "Reveal," spent 11 weeks in the Australian Top 50 debuting at #6 and peaking at #5 in its 4th week on the charts. It is certified as Gold (35,000 copies sold). Radiohead?s "Amnesiac" spent eight weeks in the Top 50. The "Tomb Raider" soundtrack spent 7 weeks in the Top 50, peaking at #10. ATYCLB spent 46 weeks in the Australian Top 50 (and hopefully will return).

"V" by Live is the #1 album in Australia.

I'm not sure if "Celebrity" has been released in Australia, but I have not observed this N'Sync album anywhere in the Australian Top 50.

"Elevation" peaked (debuted) at #6 and spent 6 weeks in the Australian Top 50 singles chart. "Beautiful Day" debuted at #1 and "Stuck in a Moment..." debuted at #3. U2 have now enjoyed three Top 10 hits in Australia from ATYCLB.

"Can't Get You out of My Head" by Kylie Minogue is the #1 song in Australia.

No U2 song or album appears on the Australian charts (Top 50) this week.

In Ireland, in Week 47, ATYCLB slips from #2 to #5. Here is ATYCLB's run to date:

1-2-3-3-4-6-x-x-7-6
4-3-3-1-3-2-2-2-2-2
4-3-7-10-7-9-15-11-20-22
23-22-23-24-25-22-18-12-10-10*
13-6-5-1-1-2-5

(The "x" represents a week where data was not obtained due to the holiday season. The "*" indicates a week where there was some confusion on the charts - early reports indicated the album had jumped up to #3, but the chart I monitor showed no movement for this week.)

U2's ATYCLB has not dropped out of the Irish Top 25 since its debut and has spent 34 out of its 47 weeks in the Irish Top 10.

In Week 44, an unprecedented twelve U2 albums made Ireland's Top 60! "All That You Can't Leave Behind" was at #1; "The Joshua Tree" at #5; "The Best Of (1980-90)" at #10; "Achtung Baby" at #11; "Rattle & Hum" at #17; "The Unforgettable Fire" at #33; "Zooropa" at #35; "Pop" at #37; "War" at #40; "Under A Blood Red Sky" at #43; "Boy" at #45 and "October" at #60.

In Week 47, despite that fact that the Slane concert was a few weeks ago, several U2 albums are still holding strong on the Irish charts. Not only is ATYCLB still in the Top 5 (as shown above), but "The Best Of" slips just slightly from #12 to #14 and "The Joshua Tree" drops #14 to #30. This still gives U2 an incredible three albums in the Irish Top 30!

Radiohead's "Amnesiac" spent only four weeks in the Irish Top 30.

"Let It Come Down" by Spiritualized is the #1 album in Ireland.

I'm not sure if "Celebrity" has been released in Ireland, but I have not observed this N'Sync album anywhere in the Irish Top 30.

"Elevation," "Beautiful Day" and "Stuck in a Moment..." all debuted at #1 on the Irish singles charts, giving U2 three consecutive #1 singles from ATYCLB. At present, there are no U2 singles in the Irish Top 30.

"Can't Get You Out Of My Head" by Kylie Minogue is the #1 song in Ireland this week.

In the U.K., ATYCLB drops from #42 to #53 in its 47th week. Here is its chart progress to date:

1-4-10-20-25-26-28(DP)-29-29-23
17-12-12-7-7-8-10-3-6-8
12-14-23-30-39-41-49-54-65-60
53-47-47-58-65-56(TP)-47-37-30-23
22-15-16-23-34-42-53

The album has been certified as Triple Platinum (900,000 copies sold) in the U.K. Clearly, the effects of the tour have worn, as the album has returned its pre-tour chart positions. Hopefully a new single ("Walk On"?) will rejuvenate the album in the U.K. as well as Australia.

In Week 43, thanks to the tour, U2 had an impressive five albums in the U.K. top 60. This week, U2?s "Best Of," which had been floating in the Top 100 for several months, remains off the charts. However, several other U2 albums remain in the U.K. Top 100. "The Joshua Tree" drops from #49 to #63 this week. "Achtung Baby" decreases from #76 to #85; and "Rattle & Hum" drops from #74 to #90. That still gives U2 four albums in the U.K. Top 100!

N'Sync's "Celebrity" had the following run on the U.K. charts: #12-26-43-66-Out of the Top 100. That's right, the album spent only 4 weeks in the U.K. Top 100 before exiting and never made the Top 10. Combine this with the fact that I have also not observed "Celebrity" on either the Irish or Australian charts (see above), and one cannot help but question Rolling Stone's claims about N'Sync's "global" popularity.

Radiohead's "Amnesiac" debuted at #1 in the U.K. and charts at #99 this week, its 15th week on the charts. It its 53rd week, Madonna?s "Music" falls from #89 to Out of the Top 100 on the U.K. charts. The album was able to spend an entire year (52 weeks) on the U.K. charts before slipping (compare this to the 4 weeks "Celebrity" spent on the U.K. charts). P.J. Harvey's "Stories from the City..." jumped up from #134 to #61 last week and surges up to #46 this week. Go PJ!

"The ID" by Macy Gray is the #1 album in the U.K.

"Elevation" debuted at #3, but has fallen from the Top 100 on the U.K. Singles chart. "Beautiful Day" debuted at #1 and "Stuck in a Moment..." debuted at #2 on the U.K. singles chart. This gives U2 three Top 3 hits off of AYTCLB in the U.K., which is more successful than many of U2's albums, including "The Joshua Tree" and "POP."

Musique Vs U2's "New Years Dub" spent 9 weeks on the U.K. Top 100 singles charts, peaking at #15. R.E.M.'s "Imitation of Life" spent 13 weeks on the U.K. singles charts, peaking at #6.

"Can't Get You Out Of My Head" by Kylie Minogue is the #1 song in the U.K. this week. Kylie Minogue has the #1 song in Australia, Ireland and the U.K.!

Thanks in part to the tour and the fact that the DVD for this video has been released in the U.K., "Rattle & Hum" has had the following chart run the last few weeks: #172-1-1-1-2-2-4. For a movie that was released in 1988, it is quite impressive to see it return to the top of the charts.

In the U.S., ATYCLB fell from the Top 100 in its 41st week. Typically, I would stop monitoring the charts at this time. However, with the new single, various U2 promotions and return of the tour, I believed that ATYCLB would return to the Top 100. This premonition proved to be true.

Thanks to U2's MTV VMA appearance, the new single "Stuck..." and the fact that the songs on ATYCLB help people accept the horrible tragedy of September 11th, the album has now sky-rocketed back up the charts to #66 (from #78) in Week 46. The album is declared a "Pacesetter" on this week's albums chart.

The first 46 weeks for ATYCLB on the U.S. Billboard charts are:

3-5-12-22-23-24-20-18-22-16
19-19-25-33-37-35-11-15-25-31
38-40-42-45-45-48-50-48-50-58
60-53-50-66-74-82-81-89-88-99
105-106-108-104-78-66

"POP" was out of the Top 100 after 19 weeks and "Zooropa" was out of the Top 100 after 31 weeks. ATYCLB fell out of the Top 100 after 40 weeks, however, it has now returned for an additional 2 weeks. It has spent 42 out of 46 total weeks in the U.S. Top 100.

Approximate weekly sales for the first 46 weeks of ATYCLB are (rounded to nearest thousand):

428,000 + 176,000 + 119,000 + 125,000 + 100,000 + 113,000 + 154,000 + 259,000 + 108,000 + 66,000 + 59,000 + 57,000+ 47,000 + 44,000 + 41,000 + 49,000 + 85,000 + 74,000 + 54,000 + 48,000 + 43,000 + 39,000 + 37,000 + 39,000 + 30,000 + 29,000 + 26,000 + 29,000 + 25,000 + 24,000 + 27,000 + 30,000 + 31,000 + 24,000 + 22,000 + 18,000 + 19,000 + 17,000 + 17,000 + 15,000 + 14,000 + 14,000 + 13,000 + 13,000 + 16,000 + 20,000

Estimated total U.S. sales after 46 weeks are: 2,837,000.

In Week 45, when ATYCLB charted at #78, sales would typically be around 18-19,000 copies. However, Billboard claimed only a 19% increase in sales for ATYCLB. The SoundScan data from the week before (kindly sent to me by Melissa) showed sales of a little over 13,000 copies. This meant that with a 19% increase, sales could be no more than 16,000 copies for the week, which seems low (remember, this occurred before the tragedy). Nonetheless, I will use this sales estimate in my calculations.

This week, at #66, sales would typically be around 22,000 copies. I took off 10% from that number due to the tragedy and estimated sales at 20,000 copies. Since ATYCLB is also listed as a "Pacesetter," I felt this estimate was solid. Therefore, ATYCLB has now approached 2.84 million copies sold in the U.S. It shouldn't be much longer before the album is certified as 3x Platinum.

"The Best Of" remains at #5 on the Pop Catalog charts this week. The #5 ranking is the highest this album has charted on this (or any) chart (note that the DOUBLE CD verion of the "Best Of" charted at #2 on the Billboard Top 200, but not the single CD version). At #5, this puts sales at around 11,000 copies for the week.

Jay-Z's "The Blueprint" is the #1 album in the U.S., with sales of over 400,000 copies. You might recall that Jay-Z's last album beat U2's ATYCLB to the #1 spot in their debut week. However, it appears that U2 is having the "last laugh." That Jay-Z album has fallen from the Billboard Top 200 and sold 2.3 million copies in the U.S. In contrast, U2's ATYCLB has not only sold over 500,000 more copies, but is still nicely in the Top 100.

In even better news, "Stuck..." finally makes its debut on the U.S. charts. If you recall, "Beautiful Day" was a big hit in the U.S. for U2, reaching #21 on the Hot 100 charts (which is the chart to use to determine how successful a song is in the U.S.). However, despite the fact that "Walk On" and "Elevation" both charted well on other U.S. charts (reaching #10 and #8, respectively, on the U.S. Modern Rock Chart), neither song was able to break into the Hot 100.

That string has been broken as "Stuck..." debuts at #62 this week (higher than the debut for "Beautiful Day") on the Hot 100 chart! This gives U2 their second biggest hit off of ATYCLB in the U.S. Congrats to U2!
biggrin.gif
To gloat a bit, N'Sync's "Gone" debuted on the Hot 100 last week at #63. It remains there this week.
wink.gif

The question now is how high will "Stuck..." rise on the U.S. charts. It peaked at #2 in the U.K., #3 in Australia and #1 in Ireland. If the song is able to actually - dare I say it? - crack the Top 5 in the U.S., Brian Eno just might win his bet afterall!

The #1 song in the U.S. this week is "Fallin'" by Alicia Keys. "God Bless the USA" by Lee Greenwood is this week's "Hot Shot Debut" at #16. And "The Star Spangled Banner" by Whitney Houston re-enters the chart at #50.

In Canada, ATYCLB improves to #39 in Week 46. Here is the run for ATYCLB so far:

1-1-5-8-11-11-12-8-16-17
14-17-20-25-29-30-12-18-22-24
23-25-22(TP)-18-17-21-26(4P)-27-30-24
13-19-17-21-26-27-31-33-38-43
48-53-47-54-47-39

ATYLCB is certified as 4x Platinum in Canada (400,000 copies sold). The album has spent 40 out of 46 weeks in the Canadian Top 40. The rise of ATYCLB on the Canadian charts may be partially due to the success of "Stuck..." (see below).

The #1 album in Canada is "Silver Side Up" by Nickelback. In its eighth week on the Canadian charts, N'Sync's "Celebrity" slips from #17 to #18. ATYCLB was at #8 in its eighth week on the Canadian charts.

The "Tomb Raider" soundtrack spent 10 weeks in the Canadian Top 100 album charts, peaking at #9. It sold approximately 7,500-6,500 copies for the first five weeks of its release.

R.E.M.'s "Reveal" spent 10 weeks in the Canadian Top 100, debuting at #4. Radiohead's "Amnesiac" debuted at #1 with over 48,000 copies sold.

"Elevation" had spent five weeks at #1 on the Canadian CD singles sales chart. "Elevation-Part 2" was #1 for four weeks while "Elevation-Part 1" was #1 for one week. This week, "Elevation-Part 2" slips from #3 to #4 while "Elevation-Part 1" slips from #4 to #5. If the CD single sales of these two releases were combined, "Elevation" might still be the #1 song on the Canadian CD singles sales charts.

"Knives Out" by Radiohead is the #1 song on the Canadian CD singles sales chart.

"Elevation" is the third #1 single U2 has had on Canada's CD singles sales chart from ATYCLB. "Walk On" and "Beautiful Day" also reached #1 on this chart. Three #1 singles on Canada's CD singles sales chart from ATYCLB surpasses the success U2 had with "POP" in Canada. The combined sales from both CD singles allowed "Walk On" to spend 6 weeks at #1. Musique Vs U2's "New Years Dub" peaked at #10.

The CD singles market in Canada is weak though and more emphasis should be placed on Canada's airplay charts, "The Hits." "Elevation" peaked on Canada's "The Hits" chart at #15. Unfortunately, the song exited the Top 100 on the "The Hits" chart several weeks ago. The good news is that "Stuck in a Moment..." is doing great on this chart. "Stuck..." has had the following run on the Canadian Hits Charts (airplay): #72-47-33-16. "It's Been Awhile" by Staind is the #1 song on the Canadian airplay charts.

As discussed above, all of U2's CD singles from ATYCLB have hit #1 on the Canadian CD singles charts. Therefore, once (and if) "Stuck..." is released in Canada as a CD single, I am sure it will jump to the top of the charts. If "Stuck..." can also make the Top 10 on the Canadian airplay charts, then this just makes Brian Eno that much closer to winning his bet.

In the Netherlands (this is a recapitulation of the information kindly provided by Popmartijn and Flying Padre Jr.). ATYCLB drops 10 places to #39 in Week 46. The total run so far is:

1-1-1-1-1-3-3-3-6-7
6-5-7-6-6-6-5-6-1-2
8-12-16-25-30-36-38-40-45-48
49-43-39-39-45-42-36-27-15-7
6-6-14-25-29-39

Popmartijn provides a very thorough discussion of the Dutch charts, therefore, I recommend reading his comments here for more information. Below is a summary of some of that information.

U2's "Best Of" holds on for another week on the Dutch charts, falling from #64 to #82. It has spent 95 total weeks on the Dutch charts.

Alicia Keys' album, "Songs in a Minor," is the #1 album in the Netherlands. Radiohead's "Amnesiac" falls from #77 to #100 in its 14th week on the charts.

U2's "Elevation" is still doing well in some parts of the world. It remains in the Top 40 in the Netherlands, as it slips from #17 to #23 this week.

Alicia Keys' "Fallin'" is the #1 single in the Netherlands.

On the Global Charts, ATYCLB drops out of the Top 30 in its 45th week on the Global Charts. Here is its run so far (each line is 10 weeks):

1-1-1-2-3-3-4-5-7-7
7-8-10-9-9-7-6-5-7-7
12-15-out-out-out-out-out-out-out-out
out-out-out-out-out-out-out-out-out-25
13-15-13-11-21-out

("out" means out of the Top 30 on this chart). The album resurfaced in the Top 30 thanks to U2's tour in Europe. While the album is still doing well in some parts of the world, it is clearly not selling quite enough to chart in the Global Top 30. However, it has spent 28 weeks there.

And that's it!

.

This week in ITALY, ATYCLB is at #29 while Elevation is at #14!

Thanks for the chart-news Dr.Who!
I'm sure the tour has affected the video-sales for "Rattle And Hum", but I I think a bigger reason might be that it was released on DVD!

Hello,

At first I thought this weeks charts were delayed, but I just saw that I'm posting almost exact one week after my last chart update. But this is all irrelevant as it is U2's chart succes we're looking at. And here in the Netherlands they still are quite succesful. (the numbers are again courtesy of http://web.planet.nl/music/charts/megatop100/ )
Last week I talked about tough times for U2 as they were rapidly falling. This week, however, they have stabilized. In its 47th week on the charts ATYCLB is at #37, 2 postitions up from last weeks #39.
The total run so far is:
1-1-1-1-1-3-3-3-6-7
6-5-7-6-6-6-5-6-1-2
8-12-16-25-30-36-38-40-45-48
49-43-39-39-45-42-36-27-15-7
6-6-14-25-29-39-37
(all information prior to week 40 with many thanks to Flying Padre Jr.)

Sadly, The Best Of 1980-1990 continues to fall as it drops to #96 in its 96th week, a loss of another 14 places. But it isn't that bad if you consider that there are 12 new (re-)entries in the charts.
57-43-9-10
22-31-48-64-82-96
(sorry, don't have data for the other 86 weeks).

The #1 album in the Dutch charts is V by Live with Alicia Keys' Songs In A Minor as #2.

On the singles front Elevation slips 8 places to #31 in its 12th week.
Elevation's run on the charts is now:
11-7-13-17-1-2-3-11-17-17
23-31

The #1 song in the Netherlands is Fallin' by Alicia Keys. Kylie Minogue has her biggest Dutch hit to date with Can't Get You Out Of My Head rising to #2.

C ya!

German chart update:

In its 40th week on the German album charts, ATYCLB drops from #82 to #97. It might drop out of the charts next week but I'm quite sure that it will re-enter the Top 100 in a few weeks when "Walk On" is released to radio, MTV and VIVA (German clip channel).

Now some good news: ATYCLB has finally achieved "Platinum"-status. It is the only record listed as "Platinum" AND "Gold" on last week's chart, which is a bit surprising (other "Platinum" records are just listed as "Platinum").
I think this means that more than 450.000 copies have been sold here: 300.000 (Platinum) + another 150.000 (Gold).
Actual sales of ATYCLB in Germany might be a bit higher: 500.000 - 550.000 (just short of Double-Platinum). If "Walk On" becomes a hit, sales could pass the 600.000 mark (Double Platinum).

Here is some week 46/47 positions for ATYCLB around the world.

Canada #37
USA #53
Australia Out of Top 50
Ireland #5
UK #53
Netherlands #37
Germany #97
Italy #48
Recently, many of the threads in the Where the Album has a name forum were dropped. I would often go to one of the threads because it has the Web address for the site that had all the International charts. If anyone knows this address please post it here. Also, if you have info on Charts in France, Spain, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, Denmark or any other countries where ATYCLB is on the charts post it here.

Worldwide an average of 75,000 copies of ATYCLB has been sold in each of the past three weeks around the world. This brings worldwide sales to 10,075,000 for ATYCLB! Right now, sales in Europe are dropping, but they are going up in North America. It is possible that ATYCLB could hit the 11,000,000 mark worldwide by Christmas!

Hey everyone-

"Stuck" is being played a lot on the modern rock station in my area. It's not a true rock song, but they're playing it anyway. This is good because here the song is played on Top 40 (adult and pop) AND modern rock.
The video rose to # 11 this week at VH1, from # 13 last week
