Week 42 Chart News...

In Australia, ATYCLB drops slightly from #36 to #39 in its 42nd week on the charts. Here is its run so far (each line is 10 weeks):

1-1-2-3-3-3-3(TP)-3-3-6
9-12-15-13-14-14-9-8-7-8(4P)
6-6-6-5-9-12-16-18-24-25
29-27-29-30-27-28-27-33-29-38
36-39

The album is 4x Platinum (280,000 copies sold). The album has not dropped out of the Australian Top 40 since its debut.

R.E.M.'s album, "Reveal," spent 11 weeks on the Australian charts (Top 50) debuting at #6 and peaking at #5 in its 4th week on the charts. It is certified as Gold (35,000 copies sold). Radiohead?s "Amnesiac" spent only 8 weeks in the Top 50. The "Tomb Raider" soundtrack spent 7 weeks in the Top 50, peaking at #10.

The "Bridget Jones' Diary" soundtrack is the #1 album in Australia.

"Elevation" peaked (debuted) at #6 and spent 6 weeks in the Australian Top 50 singles chart. "Beautiful Day" debuted at #1 and "Stuck in a Moment..." debuted at #3. U2 have now enjoyed three Top 10 hits in Australia from ATYCLB.

"Hanging by a Moment" by Lifehouse is the #1 song in Australia.

No other U2 song or album appears on the Australian charts.

In Ireland, ATYCLB jumps back into the Top 10 at #6 this week! Here is ATYCLB's run to date:

1-2-3-3-4-6-x-x-7-6
4-3-3-1-3-2-2-2-2-2
4-3-7-10-7-9-15-11-20-22
23-22-23-24-25-22-18-12-10-10*
13-6

(The "x" represents a week where data was not obtained. The "*" indicates a week where there was some confusion on the charts - early reports indicated the album had jumped up to #3, but the chart I monitor showed no movement for this week.)

U2's ATYCLB has not dropped out of the Irish Top 25 since its debut and has spent 29 out of its 42 weeks in the Irish Top 10. I imagine that the Slane shows will return ATYCLB close to the top spot.

Radiohead's "Amnesiac" spent only four weeks in the Irish Top 30. Prince's "The Very Best of Prince" is the #1 album in Ireland.

"Elevation" has the following run on the Irish singles chart: #1-7-12-18-22. "Beautiful Day" and "Stuck in a Moment" also debuted at #1 on the Irish singles charts, giving U2 three consecutive #1 singles from ATYCLB.

"Hey Baby" by DJ Otzi is the #1 song in Ireland this week.

In the U.K., ATYCLB rises from #22 to #15 in its 42nd week. Here is its chart progress to date:

1-4-10-20-25-26-28(DP)-29-29-23
17-12-12-7-7-8-10-3-6-8
12-14-23-30-39-41-49-54-65-60
53-47-47-58-65-56(TP)-47-37-30-23
22-15

The album has been certified as Triple Platinum (900,000 copies sold) in the U.K. The jump on the charts is due to U2 touring in England. Hopefully, this surge will be enough to get ATYCLB to 4x Platinum status.

U2's tour in England hasn't only benefitted ATYCLB. U2?s "Best Of," thanks at first to the "Elevation" single, has been floating in the Top 100 for the past several weeks. Thanks to the tour, this album flew up 27 places to #56 this week. Here is its run for the last few weeks: #104-50-68-73-79-52.

The "Best Of" is not the only catalog U2 album to chart this week thanks to the tour. "Rattle & Hum" re-enters the Top 100 at #71. "Achtung Baby" re-enters the chart at #50. And "The Joshua Tree" jumps up 127 places to chart at #43 this week. This gives U2 five albums in the U.K. Top 75, three of which are in the Top 50 with one in the Top 15! This is just like it was a few months ago! Gotta love those U.K. charts!

N'Sync's "Celebrity" has had the following run: #12-26-43-66. These are not exactly the type of numbers for the "World's Biggest Band."
mad.gif

Radiohead's "Amnesiac" has had the following chart run in the U.K.: #1-7-14-28-37-39-52-58-58-54-46. Madonna?s "Music" is finally starting to fall as it drops from #63 to #70 in its 48th week on the U.K. charts. Much as U2 experienced earlier in the year, some of Madonna's older albums charted above her recent release on the U.K. charts. Clearly store sales, with discounted prices on select albums, make a BIG difference on the U.K. charts.

R.E.M.?s "Reveal" drops from #46 to #56 in its 14th week on the charts. "White Ladder" by David Gray returns as the #1 album in the U.K., nicely booting Atomic Kitten from the top spot.

"Elevation" has the following run: #3-13-24-35-41. "Beautiful Day" debuted at #1 and "Stuck in a Moment..." debuted at #2 on the U.K. singles chart. This gives U2 three Top 3 hits off of AYTCLB in the U.K., which is more successful than many of U2's albums, including "The Joshua Tree" and "POP."

Musique Vs U2's "New Years Dub" spent 9 weeks on the U.K. Top 100 singles charts, peaking at #15. R.E.M.'s "Imitation of Life" spent 13 weeks on the U.K. singles charts, peaking at #6. "Let's Dance" by Five is the #1 single in the U.K.

Anticipation for the tour has driven up video sales as well as album sales. The video for "Rattle & Hum" sky-rocketed 171 places last week, vaulting to the #1 position on the U.K. music video sales chart. This week, the video remains at #1, fending off competition from Bon Jovi's video for "The Crush Tour."

Week 42 so far is looking great. U2 perform beautifully in Ireland and the U.K. and remain stable in Australia. Updates for Canada and the U.S. will appear on Thursday.

You know, this Rolling Stone claim of N'Sync being the WORLD's Biggest Band still irks me. While I am biased, I just don't see how Rolling Stone can substantiate that claim. Look at how "Celebrity" is performing on the U.K. charts. It is at #66 this week in the U.K. - after only four weeks!! U2's ATYCLB has NEVER charted that low, after 42 weeks. Madonna's album just now is that low, after 48 weeks.

I know sometimes Rolling Stone goes out on a limb - like when they declared U2 the Band of the 80's in 1985 (a bit premature of a declaration). However, I think this time they are flat out wrong.

I totally agree doctorwho. I believe Rolling Stone thinks the United States is the entire world! After the Nsync cover, I'm ashamed to be a Rolling Stone suscriber. I did trash the Nsync issue in the garbage (where it belongs)....

In WEEK 41, ATYCLB falls to #105 on the Billboard 200 in the USA. So I think Dr. Who's estimates for sales last week are correct.
On the ADULT TOP 40 chart, "Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of" enters at #34! Also, at VH1, ELEVATION moves up to #7!

Hello,

I just got the chart positions for U2 in the Netherlands. The new numbers are courtesy of http://web.planet.nl/music/charts/megatop100/
Week 42 sees no change for ATYCLB as it holds its position at #6
The total run so far is:
1-1-1-1-1-3-3-3-6-7
6-5-7-6-6-6-5-6-1-2
8-12-16-25-30-36-38-40-45-48
49-43-39-39-45-42-36-27-15-7
6-6
(all information prior to week 40 with many thanks to Flying Padre Jr.)

Some less good news about the rest of U2 in the charts. The Best Of 1980-1990 drops 12 places to #22. Nevertheless, it is a very good achievement as it is its 91st week on the charts!
The positions for the last 4 weeks were:
57-43-9-10-22
(sorry, don't have data for the other 86 weeks).

Just like the last few weeks, that is not all folks! There is one other U2 album in the charts. Sliding slightly to #69 is The Joshua Tree (from 62). Its third run on the charts (after 1987 and 1993, I think) is now:
78-62-69

BTW (a bit off topic, but quite nice), here is some nice news. As I was looking for The Joshua Tree I started scanning from #100 upwards. At #84 I found 'N Syncs album Celebrity, dropping from #63 in its 4th week (it's now only one position higher as the album with the longest run on the charts, Buena Vista Social Club, which is in its 207th week).

Last week Elevation lost its top position to Herman Brood's My Way, when it had to settle for the #2 spot. This week sees another very small drop as Elevation occupies the #3 position.
Elevation's run on the charts is now:
11-7-13-17-1-2-3

C ya!

Well it's time for my weekly 'nsync update, as we watch their slow painful demise.

This week in the U.S. they come in at
number 3 under Now 7 and Alicia Keys. They declined 30% and sold 163,100 which brings their grand total to 2.74 million copies.

Their album is already gauranteed at least quadruple platinum because they shipped over 4 million to stores the first week. But at this rate it will take quite a few months to reach that in copies sold to consumers, if it happens at all.

I won't even report how they do outside the U.S. since the so called "biggest band in the world" has pretty muched dropped off those charts already.

In the U.S., ATYCLB fell from the Top 100 in its 41st week. Typically, I would stop monitoring the charts at this time. However, with the new single and return of the tour, I believe that ATYCLB may return to the Top 100. Also, the success the album is having in Europe right now has kept up my interest.

Melissa sent me the SoundScan news for Week 42 in the U.S., so we get some actual numbers. Yay!
biggrin.gif

In Week 41, as you all know, ATYCLB dropped from #99 to #105. It sold exactly 13,798 copies.

In Week 42, ATYCLB drops ever so slightly, from #105 to #106. However, it sees an increase in sales. This week, it sells exactly 14,491 copies.

The first 42 weeks for ATYCLB on the U.S. Billboard charts are:

3-5-12-22-23-24-20-18-22-16
19-19-25-33-37-35-11-15-25-31
38-40-42-45-45-48-50-48-50-58
60-53-50-66-74-82-81-89-88-99
105-106

"POP" was out of the Top 100 after 19 weeks and "Zooropa" was out of the Top 100 after 31 weeks. ATYCLB fell out of the Top 100 after 40 weeks (and it may return).

Approximate weekly sales for the first 42 weeks of ATYCLB are (rounded to nearest thousand):

428,000 + 176,000 + 119,000 + 125,000 + 100,000 + 113,000 + 154,000 + 259,000 + 108,000 + 66,000 + 59,000 + 57,000+ 47,000 + 44,000 + 41,000 + 49,000 + 85,000 + 74,000 + 54,000 + 48,000 + 43,000 + 39,000 + 37,000 + 39,000 + 30,000 + 29,000 + 26,000 + 29,000 + 25,000 + 24,000 + 27,000 + 30,000 + 31,000 + 24,000 + 22,000 + 18,000 + 19,000 + 17,000 + 17,000 + 15,000 + 14,000 + 14,000

Estimated total U.S. sales after 42 weeks are: 2,775,000.

As Womanfish reported, N'Sync's "Celebrity" sells 166,751 copies this week to chart at #3. This is another 32% decline in sales from Week 3 to Week 4, following the 76% drop from Week 1 to Week 2 and the 50% drop from Week 2 to Week 3.

I know some people hate comparisons, but I feel this is the only way to measure U2's commercial success or failure. Therefore, here are the some additional sales information for other artists.

Melissa Etherirdge/Skin/6/#71-70-78/24,081-20,716

As one can see, U2's ATYCLB is still performing well. Outkast, who beat U2 to the #2 spot in their debut weeks, is charting well below U2. And Jay-Z, who beat U2 to the #1 spot their debut weeks, is out of the Top 200.

The "Now That's What I Call Music - Vol. 6" release declined the most in sales, dropping from 394,483 copies to 278,538 copies sold. However, that was still enough to keep it at #1. The biggest gainer this week appears to be the soundtrack for "American Pie 2" which jumps from #26 to #7 with sales of 108,757 copies (up from the 50,837 copies it sold last week).

More information on the U.S. and Canadian charts will be revealed on Thursday when those charts are released.

Dr. Who,
Thanks for the update so soon! Its great that Melissa decided to send info for both this week and last. Plus, ATYCLB goes up in sales by about 700 copies! Perhaps Stuck... is already starting to have some effect! I hope the album gets back to 20,000 copies a week soon! Maybe in 4 weeks.

Actually, Melissa doesn't send two reports - just one. The SoundScan report always lists the prior week's figures (I guess for comparison). In other words, Melissa just sent this week's SoundScan data.

I also hope "Stuck..." is a bigger hit than the last few U2 songs. It doesn't have to be a "Beautiful Day" type of smash, but enough to at least break into the Hot 100. If that happened, I'm sure the album would pop back into the Top 100. Hope...hope!

Great to always see the chart info. Thanks Doctor. I'm glad you are back. Another interesting chart is the CNN WorldBeat Global album.
http://www.cnn.com/WorldBeat/top30/

ATYCLB was at number one for a number of weeks after it's release, and then it slid off of the charts rather quickly. Last week, it re-entered the top 30 at #25. This week it rockets up to #13. I wish there was some backup sales data, but I assume it's very difficult to gather that type of information. Still, I have to assume that this chart is making sales estimates, and at #13 worldwide, U2 has to be gaining significant ground towards Paul's estimate of 13M in sales by year end.

'N Sync's celebrity is at #10. We know their sales in the U.S., and have some estimates of their sales outside the U.S. The CNN chart lags billboard by a week, so perhaps ATYCLB sold 250K or more worldwide last week?

The tour in Europe is obviously helping the album in select countries, but I think it's having a bigger impact on their total sales figure than I thought it would. With the next two weekends booked at Slane Castle, I think sales will continue to climb.

Then with the MTV performance, Stuck catching on, and the proposed fall tour in the U.S....well, this album could exceed all expectations. Also, a well timed release of the DVD, which is slated for November, could get one more push for the album with the Christmas season. I know we've complained about the singles performance in the U.S., but overall, it appears to me that this album was promoted almost flawlessly. I'm just glad because this means many, many more people will be exposed to, and probably fall in love with, U2's music.

Well I must disagree with the statement that the album has been promoted almost "flawlessly." While I think they have done a good job, I think there have been several mis-steps. I won't go into all of them, but for instance, right now, Stuck is being added to Top 40 big time, but we still don't see a video!?!? This is at a time when videos are actually becoming relevant again after more than five years of them not really being a big part of promotion. All other artists come out and hit on all media cylinders, U2 seems to be a bit hit and miss.

Look at the success of J. Lo's latest single. A big part of it is the video's success. It rocketed her album from the 90's up to the top 15!

OK, I digress. I really came to say, it's awesome to see the album continuing to succeed and I hope that Stuck and the tour, and dvd, and MTV awards and Grammys can help to prolong this awesome run!!

thanks for all the info guys

This isn't quite right. Here is the Top 30 WorldWide Chart News from CNN for ATYCLB:

1-1-1-2-3-3-4-5-7-7
7-8-10-9-9-7-6-5-7-7
12-15-out of Top 30 in Week 23
Week 41 Returns: 25-13

So while it fell from the Top 30 rather abruptly in Week 23, I wouldn't say it slid off the charts quickly as it spent 5 months there. And now it's back - yay!
biggrin.gif

I would put ATYCLB worldwide sales this week at around 100,000 copies and not 250,000. I estimate this by using chart positions in the other countries, their population compared the the USA, what the same position would sale on the USA charts, and then downgrade it based on the population of the country. Its a very rough estimate indeed. By the end of this month, ATYCLB should be up to 9.7 million in sales worldwide! This is 1 million more than the 8.7 million figure posted in mid-May. September should bring worldwide sales to over 10 million copies! Still a massive figure even in 2001!
I'm not sure if ATYCLB will be able to get to 13 million by the end of the year. I think 11 million by the end of the year is a more realistic goal.

Womanfish,

I agree, I have been wondering about the Stuck video myself. It is critical in promoting the song. From what I've heard, it's certainly available for release. The only thing I can think of is that U2 is waiting for their MTV performance. They are nominated a number of times for the Elevation video, and will likely perform the song. Maybe even open the show. Perhaps the Stuck video will be released after the one last Elevation push. Worldwide, and on the video music channels for that matter, Elevation has been a modest hit. I also wonder if it is still climbing up the dance/club play charts.

Anyway, flawlessly is too extreme. It's just such an improvement over their last effort. I am going back to SNL, repeated live musical performances and appearances, a well conceived, and very well received, tour, Beautiful Day as the first single, on and on and blah, blah, blah. They came close to getting it right, IMO. Just wish we would have had singles released in the U.S. Maybe it would not change a thing, but their biggest fans would surely have appreciated it.

In Australia most Singles sell at $5.
Elevation Single cost $10!!
WHY??!!
There was a special edition that sold out within days for $5.
Who wants to buy 5 remixes of it for $10 when you can get it on the Moulon Rouge CD with plenty of other songs for $15-19.

Bloody Crazy!!!!

Week 42 for Canada...

In brief, ATYCLB dropped to #53, the lowest it's been on the Canadian charts and the first time it has been out of the Top 50. The CD singles for "Elevation" dropped from #1 and #2 (for Parts 2 and 1, respectively) to #2 and #3, ending "Elevation's" run at the Top of the charts. One version of the single was on top for 5 weeks.

Although the CD single is still doing well on the sales charts, the song has fallen from the Top 100 on the radio charts.
