Sorry... there were some egregious typos in this post that I initially missed. I apologize - hopefully this edit will make the information more logical.

Week 38 and Week 39 Chart News...

Here is new Week 39 chart news for Ireland, Australia and the U.K. and Week 38 chart news for Canada and the U.S.

In Australia, ATYCLB rises from #33 to #29 in its 39th week on the charts. Here is its run so far (each line is 10 weeks):

1-1-2-3-3-3-3(TP)-3-3-6
9-12-15-13-14-14-9-8-7-8(4P)
6-6-6-5-9-12-16-18-24-25
29-27-29-30-27-28-27-33-29

The album is 4x Platinum (280,000 copies sold). ATYCLB has spent all but one week (last week) in the Australian Top 30 since its debut.

R.E.M.'s album, "Reveal," has the following chart performance: #6-8-11-5-8-10-15-18-26-37-38-out of Top 50. It is certified as Gold (35,000 copies sold). Radiohead?s "Amnesiac" drops to #45 (from #39) in its 8th week.

The "Tomb Raider" soundtrack debuted on the Australian albums charts six weeks ago and has had the following run: #10-11-13-16-20-38.

The "Moulin Rouge" soundtrack is the #1 album in Australia.

"Elevation" has had the following chart run on the Australian singles chart: #6-22-24-33-36.

As shown, "Elevation" debuted at #6 on the Australian charts five weeks ago. "Beautiful Day" debuted at #1 and "Stuck in a Moment..." debuted at #3, meaning this is the lowest any single from ATYCLB has debuted on the Australian charts. Despite the rather quick drop down the charts, it should be noted that U2 have now enjoyed three Top 10 hits in Australia from ATYCLB.

"Follow Me" by Uncle Kracker is the #1 song in Australia.

No other U2 or R.E.M. song or album appears on the Australian charts.

ATYCLB returns to the TOP 10!

Well, at least in Ireland it does. In Ireland, ATYCLB jumps up from #12 to #10 in its 39th week. Here is its run to date:

1-2-3-3-4-6-x-x-7-6
4-3-3-1-3-2-2-2-2-2
4-3-7-10-7-9-15-11-20-22
23-22-23-24-25-22-18-12-10

(The "x" represents a week where data was not obtained.)

U2's ATYCLB has not dropped out of the Irish Top 25 since its debut. This rise on the Irish charts is most likely due to U2's tour starting in Europe as well as the release of "Elevation."

R.E.M.'s "Reveal" drops from #21 to #23. Radiohead's "Amnesiac" spent only four weeks in the Irish Top 30. Destiny's Child's "Survivor" is the #1 album in Ireland.

"Elevation" debuted at #1 on the Irish charts last week. This is the third #1 single U2 has had in Ireland from ATYCLB (3 for 3). Congrats to U2 for another #1 song! Unfortunately, the song falls to #7 this week. "Hey Baby" by DJ Otzi is the #1 song in Ireland this week.

In the U.K., ATYCLB rises from #37 to #30 in its 39th week. Here is its chart progress to date:

1-4-10-20-25-26-28(DP)-29-29-23
17-12-12-7-7-8-10-3-6-8
12-14-23-30-39-41-49-54-65-60
53-47-47-58-65-56(TP)-47-37-30

The album has now been certified as Triple Platinum (900,000 copies sold) in the U.K. The rise on the U.K. charts corresponds with the tour shifting to Europe and "Elevation" receiving airplay on European radio (similar to the Irish charts).

Radiohead's "Amnesiac" has had the following chart run in the U.K.: #1-7-14-28-37-39-52-58. Madonna?s "Music" is still holding strong, slipping from #33 to #41 in its 45th week on the U.K. charts. R.E.M.?s "Reveal" drops to #46 in its 11th week. Destiny?s Child has the #1 album in the U.K.

"Elevation" debuted at #3 on the U.K. charts last week. This was a bit surprising as initial reports stated that it was closely battling for the #1 position. Still, this gives U2 three Top 3 hits off of AYTCLB in the U.K., which is more successful than many of U2?s albums, including ?The Joshua Tree? and ?POP.? This week, "Elevation" drops to #13 ? typical of U2?s single performance in the U.K. (big debuts followed by a big drop).

Musique Vs U2's "New Years Dub" has had the following chart run: #15-37-55-74-out of the Top 100-78-75-88-93-96. R.E.M.'s "Imitation of Life" has the following chart performance on the U.K. singles chart: #6-15-24-36-45-64-66-73-73-98-98-94-98. Atomic Kitten?s "Eternal Flame" is the #1 single in the U.K.

The success of "Elevation" helped U2?s "Best Of" sky-rocket back into the Top 50 in the U.K. last week as it jumped up to #50 from #104. This week, the "Best Of" album slips to #68.

The first 38 weeks for ATYCLB on the U.S. Billboard charts are:

3-5-12-22-23-24-20-18-22-16
19-19-25-33-37-35-11-15-25-31
38-40-42-45-45-48-50-48-50-58
60-53-50-66-74-82-81-89

"POP" was out of the Top 100 after 19 weeks and "Zooropa" was out of the Top 100 after 31 weeks.

Approximate weekly sales for the first 38 weeks of ATYCLB are (rounded to nearest thousand):

428,000 + 176,000 + 119,000 + 125,000 + 100,000 + 113,000 + 154,000 + 259,000 + 108,000 + 66,000 + 59,000 + 57,000+ 47,000 + 44,000 + 41,000 + 49,000 + 85,000 + 74,000 + 54,000 + 48,000 + 43,000 + 39,000 + 37,000 + 39,000 + 30,000 + 29,000 + 26,000 + 29,000 + 25,000 + 24,000 + 24,000 + 30,000 + 33,000 + 25,000 + 22,000 + 21,000 + 21,000 + 19,000

Estimated total U.S. sales after 38 weeks are: 2,722,000.

Much of the weekly sales data was obtained from actual SoundScan sales charts (kindly provided to me by another U2 fan). However, as of late, this information has not been available. The sales for Weeks 32-38 have been estimated based solely on past sales information and trends. I realize that my totals may be off by a few thousand, but I feel my tally is rather accurate.

R.E.M.'s "Reveal" fell out of the Top 100 in its 7th week. Depeche Mode's "Exciter" fell out of the Top 100 in its 8th week. Stankonia's "Outkast" fell out of the Top 100 in its 37th week (if you recall, this album beat ATYCLB to the #2 spot in their debut weeks). Jay-Z's album, which beat ATYCLB to the #1 spot in their debut weeks, has been out of the Top 100 for several months. Stevie Nicks' "Trouble in Shangri-La" fell out of the Top 100 in its 11th week. Sade and Snoop Dogg, two artists that kept pace with U2 for a while, have long since disappeared from the Top 100. The #1 album in the U.S. Alicia Keys' "Songs In A Minor." Radiohead's "Amnediac? dropped to #74 in its 7th week on the charts.

The "Tomb Raider" soundtrack has had the following run: #33-35-32-48-55-65-92.

"Elevation" peaked at #8 on the U.S. Modern Rock charts. This is the highest "Elevation" has reached on any U.S. chart so far. "Beautiful Day" peaked at #5 on the Modern Rock charts, while "Walk On" peaked at #10. The highest "Beautiful Day" reached on any chart was #1 on the Dance Charts.

Although ATYCLB is now slowly declining on the U.S. charts, it has now sold over 2.7 million copies in the U.S. and should obtain 3x Platinum status soon. I recently read an article that stated a Robbie Williams' album was certified as 7x Platinum in the U.K. (2.1 million copies shipped) but had only sold 1.2 million copies to consumers. So if the stores in the U.K. are willing to have an extra 900,000 copies of this album, I'm sure stores in the much larger U.S. have 300,000 copies of ATYCLB between them. 3x Platinum status should come the next time Interscope requests an RIAA audit.

The return of the tour in the autumn or a new hit song could significantly rejuvenate the album. Unlike the POPMart tour, which did little to help promote the album in the U.S., the Elevation Tour kept ATYCLB strong on the U.S. charts. Therefore, I expect ATYCLB to actually surpass 3 million copies sold to actual consumers in the U.S. before it finally fades from the charts. Of significance is the fact that ATYCLB sold over one million copies in the U.S. in both 2000 and 2001. It sold approximately 1,582,000 last year and approximately 1,140,000 copies this year.

There is no other U2 album or song on the U.S. charts this week.

In Canada, ATYCLB falls from #31 to #33 its 38th week. Here is its run to date:

1-1-5-8-11-11-12-8-16-17
14-17-20-25-29-30-12-18-22-24
23-25-22(TP)-18-17-21-26(4P)-27-30-24
13-19-17-21-26-27-31-33

ATYLCB is certified as 4x Platinum in Canada (400,000 copies sold).

The "Tomb Raider" soundtrack has had the following run in Canada: #11-9-11-18-20-33-44. It sold approximately 7,500-6,500 copies for the first five weeks of its release.

R.E.M.'s "Reveal" has had the following run: #4-8-19-29-36-51-73-74-78-98. Radiohead's "Amnesiac" debuted at #1 with over 48,000 copies sold. It has had the following chart run in Canada: #1-4-8-16-21-34-41. D12's "Devil's Night" is the #1 album in Canada this week.

"Elevation" remains the #1 song on Canada's CD singles sales chart this week. Although I was told that Canada is now combining the sales of both versions of a CD single into one, based on the charts this week, Canada is once again charting different versions of a CD single separately. "Elevation-Part 2" is #1 while "Elevation-Part 1" is #2. "Elevation-Part 1" was #1 last week.

"Elevation" is the third #1 single U2 has had on this chart from ATYCLB. "Walk On" and "Beautiful Day" also reached #1 on Canada's CD singles sales chart. Three #1 singles from ATYCLB surpasses the success U2 had with "POP" in Canada. The combined sales from both CD singles allowed "Walk On" to spend 6 weeks at #1. Musique Vs U2's "New Years Dub" peaked at #10.

R.E.M.'s "Imitation of Life" peaked at #5 and Radiohead's "Pyramid Song" peaked at #2 on Canada's CD singles sales chart.

The CD singles market in Canada is weak though and more emphasis should be placed on the airplay charts. "Elevation" peaked on Canada's "The Hits" chart at #15. This week it charts at #35. R.E.M.'s "Imitation of Life" peaked at #24 Canada's "The Hits" chart. It is currently #76.

It is a bit surprising to see ATYCLB out of the Canadian Top 30, especially since "Elevation" is #1 on the CD singles chart and is still performing well on the radio chart. Regardless, congrats to U2 for having another #1 song in Canada!

In summary, ATYCLB goes up in Ireland, Australia and the U.K. in Week 39. In Canada, "Elevation" is the #1 CD single for the second consecutive week. In the U.S., ATYCLB holds in the Top 100 for another week - and has definitively crossed the 2.7 million copies sold barrier.

Week 39 news for the U.S. and Canada will appear on Thursday.

I think retailers in the UK made the same mistake with Robbie Williams that retailers in the USA made with the Backstreet Boys. A popular artist comes out with a new album and retailers over order the album. This does not happen often though, and over time, and albums actual sales fall in line with its shipment figures. Retailers would go out of business otherwise. Not that Robbie and Backstreet care, a record sold to a retailer is royalties in their pocket.
With ATYCLB selling about 20,000 copies a week at the moment, I think we will see triple platinum in about two months. If sells go up, it will happen sooner.

Week 38 in Italy is a big one for U2! ATYCLB ZOOMS up to #21 from #33! Elevation moves up one to #3 on the singles chart!
Thanks again Dr. Who for all the chart info! August is going to be a great month for U2 in Europe!

Best of 1980-1990 has been certified platinum this week. go to billboard.com and look under gold and platinum.

I thought ATYCLB would be certified triple platinum, since Best Of was re-audited. Then I realzied ATYCLB was released by Interscope and Best Of was released Island. I guess we have to wait a wee longer for ATYCLB to be re-audited by Interscope...

Dima,
Thanks for the Italian chart history! I'm surprised Best Of... only got a platinum award. I for sure thought it would get a double platinum. ATYCLB still has probably 150,000 more copies to be shipped before it hits triple platinum. The albums sales have been steady for the past few months, so I think retailers have a 5 week supply based the past weeks sales. That would put the album at 2,722,000 scanned, 2,817,000 shipped in the USA. The album will be certified triple platinum some time in the last half of September or early October depending on sales. If sales stay the same as this past week, I predict its going to be another 9 weeks before we see the triple platinum certification.

More week 38 news(USA),
ELEVATION falls to #33 on the Modern Rock Chart. ELEVATION falls to #40 on The Main Stream Rock Tracks chart. Elevation moves up two spots to #47 on the DANCE CLUB play chart.
At VH1, Elevation is at #11. At MTV, it is at #38. This according to VIDEO MONITOR which tracks the number of times video's are played at the channels.

Sting, you have to remember that The Best of... was counted as two seperate releases by the idiots at Billboard. The other version (with b-sides disc) debuted much higher and sold many more copies. You will need to look back at old Billboards or check with doctorwho, but I think that the Best of with b-sides has sold over 2 million copies. So if the people at Billboard were rational people they would treat both releases as the same because the B-sides were really just a bonus disc, and the Best Of... would be certified at least triple platinum if not 4X's.

Womanfish

I think you are right as I remember Dr Who made mention of this as well. The orginal Best OF came out with the B sides and went double platinum (I think maybe 2-2.5m copies). Then the smaller version of the album came out without the B Sides and if you noticed in the POP catalog charts a few months ago was listed as Gold. This is the version that appears to be held in stock by the record stores and selling to the public. Hence the now platinum certification so now at least 3m US sales for the BEST OF (compared to 5m for Europe - see below).

In other chart news, U2.com reported the following

Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of is now released to radio in the US, while Elevation is rising in charts worldwide.

Elevation climbed to No.5 on Music and Media's European Hot 100 Singles this week, while clinching the No.1 spot in Portugal and Ireland and climbing fast elsewhere.

In Spain Elevation is at No. 2, in Italy and the UK at No. 3 and in Denmark at No.6

The success of the single, itself boosted by its prominence on the soundtrack of the hit Tomb Raider movie, is also propelling All That You Can't Leave Behind back up the charts. It's at 18 on the European Hot 100, with 'The Best of 1980-1990' climbing back into the hundred and registering European sales of 5million.

Other tracks released from All That You Can't Leave Behind to date include, Beautiful Day (worldwide) and Walk On (Canada only).

Great news about ATYCLB and Elevation in Europe - they are doing exceptionally well. Mmmm - interesting about Stuck being released to US radio. Wonder if the record buying public will find out about this and whether there will be a CD single and even video released in the coming weeks

sounds like there definitely will be a video for Stuck in the U.S. Whether it's the rumored "football video" or the one they just shot in Berlin remains to be seen.

I think that stuck could do well on adult top 40 radio if it is given a promotional push by the record company. If not, it will die like Walk On and Elevation.

The Best of with the B-sides is actually a double album, so the double platinum figure is for sales of 1 million and not 2 million. A double album achieved double platinum by just selling one million units in the USA. The best of CD and the B-side CD are individualy counted. So the real sells are 1 million units for that.
Now that the Best of without the B-sides has hit platinum, the combined sells in the USA are 2 million. I did think the Best of without the B-sides would get a multi-platinum certification since it has done so well on the POP catalog chart.
Great news about the International Charts! I also saw on Worldpop's Global chart that Elevation was at #5!

Another snippet from the Euro charts ATYCLB is Number 24 (35 last week) in France this week.

In the US - number 88 so another week in the top 100. God bless it the bugger is still hanging on.

Yep, U2 moves up one spot to 88 this week. Still no singles on any other chart. We see the power of a hit single with J.Lo's album jumping up about 40 spots this week. Oh and what a horrible song it is! Hopefully stuck could get it's ass on the Adult top 40 chart, we could see the album at least hang in the top 100 for a good while longer.

German charts:

Elevation moves up to #39. Elevation's run on Germany's singles chart: 31-47-43-39

ATYCLB moves up from #34 to #31 in its 32th week on the German album chart (it has been out of the Top 100 for several weeks). Still no sign of a platinum certification.

Last week I forgot to mention that The Best Of 1980-90 re-entered the charts as well at #62. It drops to #80 this week. The Best Of has spend 38 (or 39 - not sure) weeks on the Top 100 and is certified as Platinum (300.000 sold).

ATYCLB is now at 2,741,000 copies sold in the USA! Also after selling between 50,000 and 75,000 copies per week worldwide for the past several weeks, the recent upswing around the world definitely has that figure around 100,000 now. Last week the album re-charted on the GLOBAL top 30 chart on CNN.com at #30. This week it should go even higher. GLOBAL sales for ATYCLB are now somewhere between 9.3 million and 9.6 million! If the current sales rate keeps up, the album could cross the 10 million mark in one month!
