Watching PopMart Mexico tonight made me recall...

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
I haven't seen POPMart live, but the Mexican concert is a bit of a hit-and-miss for me, just like POP itself. I'm not crazy about some of the costumes and the overall garishness, and at times it seems like the band is lost amid its props and visuals. Although I like the song, 'Mofo' IMO is a pretty blah opener and "Velvet Dress" is just as dull live as it is on the album. That said, there were plenty of great musical moments and the show was hugely entertaining and touching in places. POPMart's "Untill the End..." is my favourite video version of this song, and "One" is so full of emotion it's almost unbearable to watch sometimes.

Ah-hem. The dancing transvestite was a little much for me, though! :D

Yes...that would be my only complaint (if you could call it that) w/ the show...not the best mental picture...

Anyways, I loved it too, even if I wasn't around for the "real thing"...videos, bootlegs and pics only make me love that U2-era more.

Gypsy, is this your name on the thread? I dont think so. I dont know who you are. I was not trashing you. I dont even know you. This comment is what i was referring to. And please dont call me stupid. Peace

No Nellie this is the comment I made that I thought you were posting about:

It pains me to see that no one can ever start or keep up a "POP appreciation thread" without bashing and insulting the fans who didn't like it or rejected it. Remember that before you dump on me for saying something negative in a POP glorification thread.

Which I had posted in response to this:

It pains me that people slag off PopMart (usually people who didn't even attend, or still wish it was 1983 and Bono was still waiving white flags), because the criticism is generally so uninformed and undeserving.

So, see, when I had already answered the things you said before you even said them, and you said them anyway, yeah, it looked like you were trying to annoy me. Sorry.

About the 'ignore' thing from Elementary school, it never worked for me. Once people label you as someone to be harrassed, you're going to get it, regardless of what you do or don't do. Wertsie, I'd love to join you in staying out of Popfights, but some of the same inevitable comments always appear to piss me off and I must say something, for all the good it does.

To the person who said why does no one get upset when someone yells 'Boy rocks' it's because, a) no one ever says it and b)no one feels the need to create these threads bragging on any other album and slagging on the people who don't enjoy it. It's just Pop, always.

Gotta love those Popmart shirts! Is it the one with the shopping cart orbiting the lemon?

Would you agree that non-fans respond pretty favorably to Popmart? I'd say my sister likes it better than ZooTV, and many other people I've watched it with ( :cough: forced them to watch it with me :cough: ) really enjoyed it and were impressed by the band, their music, and the wild stage setup. Maybe "non-fans" like it because their expectations are not as high as say, someone who saw the Joshua Tree/R&H tour or the ZooTV tour? Just a theory. :slant:

The shirt is the black one with the four mug shots on the front.

As for whether the non-fans responded better to Popmart than Zootv, I can't really say. I was too young during Zootv to know about that kind of thing.

 Popmart 6/27/97 Chicago

 <---- me thinking about Popmart Mexico City on DVD

Ooh! Where were your seats on 6/27? I was there too! We were in the middle section on the far left side of the floor, I think.

i've never been to pop mart show , i had a choice in 1997 , where to go on my first big rock show , there were two choices : Rolling Stones Bridges To Babylon tour or U2 PoP Mart , i was not interested in U2 back then , i never thought that Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me single and Joshua Tree are written by one band , i went to Stones show , it was awesome ( it made me to buy atleast 5 or 6 albums by Jagger, Richards & Co ) , as for video Pop mart mexico , i liked very much all songs are great , lemon / trans/ intro re-enter the stage was freakin genious , costumes ? all great , except Bono's during Discotheque encore , evrything else was great , perfect , very enjoyble to me ,

It's cool Gypsy:) I can understand now why things get a bit heated when Popmart is discussed, Its been a while since I posted in here. I think its cool to love or hate certain tours they did or certain albums, it doesnt make them any less of a true U2 fan. I was out of line also, when I said stay out of the thread if no one has nothing nice to say. I shouldn't have said that. I'm sorry If I have offended anyone in this thread also. Peace

Hmmm. I'd say that's a good theory ... but I wouldn't say it was that their expectations aren't high, per se. I think Popmart would fulfill high expectations :D ... I would say their expectations aren't, well, set. They don't have any template for what they think the show will or should be, so they can simply experience it for what it is.

And I can't wait for the hockey season to start. :) HeartlandGirl , you should join the interference fantasy hockey league on Yahoo! There's a thread about it over at Put Em Under Pressure.

Good point. High expectations and set expectations are certainly different.

Fantasy hockey? Oooh... *runs off to PEUP*

We were up in the stands, on the right side, toward the end of the stadium. Maybe row 15 or something? They weren't great seats, but with the hugeness of Popmart, it didn't matter at all.

Oh, and just for the record? BOY ROCKS! It does. It's just crackling with energy and exuberance and potential ... and you can practically hear the goofy pants. :)

  HEAR the goofy pants! I love that!

Yes, I love Boy. Boy is amazing!

PS. My mom and I saw Morleigh on 6/27...Our seats were next to that little booth...I don't know what the booth was for for sure...Vips, maybe, but there was like sound stuff in there too...she was in there.

I?m sorry Gypsy, but that didn?t sound accurate for me. So I performed a quick search through Interference forums, using album name + appreciation thread. Here are some of the results...only 80?s U2. Some threads I posted in, some I didn?t. Nevertheless I think all of them are nice to read.

My point with all of this silly search was to make you see that lots of people here love other U2 albums as much as you do. Some also love Pop, including me, and I cannot agree with that theory about Pop being overrated among Interferencers. We?re all passionate U2 fans...or we wouldn?t spend so many hours here, some for more than 2 years already. I don?t think any hatre will ever have a place among us. Or at least it shouldn?t have.

So lets praise U2. Lets praise every album, every era, every tour, every single song. They deserve all that praise. You will surely find lots of people who agree with you and your personal choices concerning U2 work. And I will follow you whenever you post a Boy appreciation thread...or an October appreciation thread...or a great thread about a marvellous song like Red Hill Mining Town you posted a couple of weeks ago...here:

Follower, I saw all those before and I never said or meant no one ever posted appreciation threads for other albums. The difference is, with those, no one ever starts off by going 'this album rock so damn hard and all the people who hated it were stupid idiots and wrong and misinformed and didn't get it.' If you think I'm wrong here, read the first posts in this thread and the ATYCLB comeback album thread, they both contain the cliches'. POP is the only album that is constantly brought up in some way, either directly or indirectly (such as in an anti-ATYCLB thread) and the underlying theme of 90$ of all Pop threads is not how much the person loves and appreciates it but how mad they are that it was 'underappreciated' and 'bashed' by so many fans, whose intellect proceeds to be degraded by remarks like 'didn't get it;' 'not a true fan' etc. Of course there are threads about other albums, but they are usually sparsely participated in, and there are no arguments about it. Only Pop stirs that kind of reaction.

Well my friend, although I respect your opinion, I still cannot agree with all of this...I see no need to fight over something so exaustively discussed here, and I'm saying that not only for you, if you nice people out there allow me. My intention in pointing out you and others to all those fine threads about 80's U2 albums was a good one because I thought you got things misunderstood...that their 80's work was underrated. If I was wrong, then I apologize. I said here more than once and I'll say it again...I'm damn lucky to truly love all U2 work, regardless anything, whether is an specific era, or album, or looks, or whatever. It's like Bono said in Trip Trough Your Wires..."I was thirsty and you wet my lips"...that's the way U2 songs are for me.

Peace

 follower, I just have to say that I have really enjoyed reading your posts over the last couple of days. You seem like an intelligent, rational person and I really respect that!

To add to this, I think we all just need to lighten up in general. We're all here because we love U2. It's so great to be involved with a community where so many people "get it." I don't come across many people like this in my everyday life, unfortunately.

I think that letting people get a rise out of you here is just plain silly. I know that I've already let people get me worked up here about certain things too many times...and you know, it doesn't do either side any good to get all pissed off about it. Just Walk On and enjoy the music
